What eight?
รูปี รูปานิ ปสฺสติ✎ ร่าง
Rūpī rūpāni passati
Having physical form, they see forms.
อยํ ปฐโม วิโมกฺโข ฯ✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ paṭhamo vimokkho.
This is the first liberation.
อชฺฌตฺตํอรูปสญฺญี
พหิทฺธารูปานิ ปสฺสติ✎ ร่าง
Ajjhattaṁ arūpasaññī bahiddhā rūpāni passati,
Not perceiving form internally, they see forms externally.
อยํ ทุติโย วิโมกฺโข ฯ✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ dutiyo vimokkho.
This is the second liberation.
สุภนฺเตว
อธิมุตฺโต โหติ✎ ร่าง
Subhanteva adhimutto hoti,
They’re focused only on beauty.
อยํ ตติโย วิโมกฺโข ฯ✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ tatiyo vimokkho.
This is the third liberation.
สพฺพโส รูปสญฺญานํ
สมติกฺกมฺม ปฏิฆสญฺญานํ อตฺถงฺคมา นานตฺตสญฺญานํ อมนสิการา
อนนฺโต อากาโสติ อากาสานญฺจายตนํ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ✎ ร่าง
Sabbaso rūpasaññānaṁ samatikkamā paṭighasaññānaṁ atthaṅgamā nānattasaññānaṁ amanasikārā ‘ananto ākāso’ti ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati,
Going totally beyond perceptions of form, with the disappearance of perceptions of impingement, not focusing on perceptions of diversity, aware that ‘space is infinite’, they enter and remain in the dimension of infinite space.

จตุตฺโถ วิโมกฺโข ฯ✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ catuttho vimokkho.
This is the fourth liberation.
สพฺพโส อากาสานญฺจายตนํ สมติกฺกมฺม
อนนฺตํ วิญฺญาณนฺติ วิญฺญาณญฺจายตนํ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ✎ ร่าง
Sabbaso ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ samatikkamma ‘anantaṁ viññāṇan’ti viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati,
Going totally beyond the dimension of infinite space, aware that ‘consciousness is infinite’, they enter and remain in the dimension of infinite consciousness.
อยํ
ปญฺจโม วิโมกฺโข ฯ✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ pañcamo vimokkho.
This is the fifth liberation.
สพฺพโส วิญฺญาณญฺจายตนํ สมติกฺกมฺม
นตฺถิ กิญฺจีติ อากิญฺจญฺญายตนํ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ✎ ร่าง
Sabbaso viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ samatikkamma ‘natthi kiñcī’ti ākiñcaññāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati,
Going totally beyond the dimension of infinite consciousness, aware that ‘there is nothing at all’, they enter and remain in the dimension of nothingness.
อยํ ฉฏฺโฐ
วิโมกฺโข ฯ✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ chaṭṭho vimokkho.
This is the sixth liberation.
สพฺพโส อากิญฺจญฺญายตนํ สมติกฺกมฺม
เนวสญฺญานาสญฺญายตนํ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ✎ ร่าง
Sabbaso ākiñcaññāyatanaṁ samatikkamma nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ upasampajja viharati,
Going totally beyond the dimension of nothingness, they enter and remain in the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception.
อยํ สตฺตโม
วิโมกฺโข ฯ✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ sattamo vimokkho.
This is the seventh liberation.
สพฺพโส เนวสญฺญานาสญฺญายตนํ สมติกฺกมฺม
สญฺญาเวทยิตํ นิโรธํ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ✎ ร่าง
Sabbaso nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ samatikkamma saññāvedayitanirodhaṁ upasampajja viharati,
Going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, they enter and remain in the cessation of perception and feeling.
อยํ อฏฺฐโม วิโมกฺโข ฯ✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ aṭṭhamo vimokkho.
This is the eighth liberation.
อิเม โข อานนฺท อฏฺฐ วิโมกฺขา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ime kho, ānanda, aṭṭha vimokkhā.
These are the eight liberations.
ยโต โข อานนฺท ภิกฺขุ อิเม อฏฺฐ วิโมกฺเข อนุโลมํปิ
สมาปชฺชติ ปฏิโลมํปิ สมาปชฺชติ อนุโลมปฏิโลมํปิ สมาปชฺชติ
ยตฺถิจฺฉกํ ยทิจฺฉกํ ยาวติจฺฉกํ สมาปชฺชติปิ วุฏฺฐาติปิ✎ ร่าง
Yato kho, ānanda, bhikkhu ime aṭṭha vimokkhe anulomampi samāpajjati, paṭilomampi samāpajjati, anulomapaṭilomampi samāpajjati, yatthicchakaṁ yadicchakaṁ yāvaticchakaṁ samāpajjatipi vuṭṭhātipi.
When a mendicant enters into and withdraws from these eight liberations—in forward order, in reverse order, and in forward and reverse order—wherever they wish, whenever they wish, and for as long as they wish;

อาสวานญฺจ
ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐ ว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา
สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ อยํ วุจฺจตานนฺท ภิกฺขุ อุภโตภาควิมุตฺโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
Āsavānañca khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati, ayaṁ vuccatānanda, bhikkhu ubhatobhāgavimutto.
and when they realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements, they’re called a mendicant who is freed both ways.
อิมาย จ อานนฺท อุภโตภาควิมุตฺติยา อญฺญา อุภโตภาควิมุตฺติ
อุตฺตริตรา วา ปณีตตรา วา นตฺถีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Imāya ca, ānanda, ubhatobhāgavimuttiyā aññā ubhatobhāgavimutti uttaritarā vā paṇītatarā vā natthī”ti.
And, Ānanda, there is no other freedom both ways that is better or finer than this.”
อิทมโวจ ภควา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Idamavoca bhagavā.
That is what the Buddha said.
อตฺตมโน
อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควโต ภาสิตํ อภินนฺทีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Attamano āyasmā ānando bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandīti.
Satisfied, Venerable Ānanda approved what the Buddha said.
มหานิทานสุตฺตํ นิฏฺฐิตํ ทุติยํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Mahānidānasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ dutiyaṁ.
