That’s how an individual is dark and bound for light.

Kathañca, mahārāja, puggalo jotitamaparāyano hoti?
And how is an individual light and bound for darkness?

อิธ มหาราช เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล อุจฺเจ กุเล ปจฺฉาชาโต โหติ
ขตฺติยมหาสาลกุเล วา พฺราหฺมณมหาสาลกุเล วา
คหปติมหาสาลกุเล วา อฑฺเฒ มหทฺธเน มหาโภเค
ปหูตชาตรูปรชเต ปหูตวิตฺตูปกรเณ ปหูตธนธญฺเญ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Idha, mahārāja, ekacco puggalo ucce kule paccājāto hoti, khattiyamahāsālakule vā brāhmaṇamahāsālakule vā gahapatimahāsālakule vā, aḍḍhe mahaddhane mahābhoge pahūtajātarūparajate pahūtavittūpakaraṇe pahūtadhanadhaññe.
It’s when an individual is reborn in an eminent family—a well-to-do family of aristocrats, brahmins, or householders—rich, affluent, and wealthy, with lots of gold and silver, lots of property and assets, and lots of money and grain.
โส จ โหติ อภิรูโป ทสฺสนีโย ปาสาทิโก ปรมาย
วณฺณโปกฺขรตาย สมนฺนาคโต ลาภี อนฺนสฺส ปานสฺส
วตฺถสฺส ยานสฺส มาลาคนฺธวิเลปนสฺส เสยฺยาวสถปทีเปยฺยสฺส ฯ✎ ร่าง
So ca hoti abhirūpo dassanīyo pāsādiko, paramāya vaṇṇapokkharatāya samannāgato, lābhī annassa pānassa vatthassa yānassa mālāgandhavilepanassa seyyāvasathapadīpeyyassa.
And they’re attractive, good-looking, lovely, of surpassing beauty. They get to have food, drink, clothes, and vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting.
โส กาเยน ทุจฺจริตํ จรติ วาจาย ทุจฺจริตํ จรติ มนสา
ทุจฺจริตํ จรติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
So kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, manasā duccaritaṁ carati.
But they do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind.
โส กาเยน ทุจฺจริตํ จริตฺวา วาจาย ทุจฺจริตํ
จริตฺวา มนสา ทุจฺจริตํ จริตฺวา กายสฺส เภทา ปรมฺมรณา
อปายํ ทุคฺคตึ วินิปาตํ นิรยํ อุปปชฺชติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
So kāyena duccaritaṁ caritvā vācāya duccaritaṁ caritvā manasā duccaritaṁ caritvā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati.
When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.
เสยฺยถาปิ มหาราช ปุริโส ปาสาทา วา หตฺถิกฺขนฺธํ
โอโรเหยฺย หตฺถิกฺขนฺธา วา อสฺสปิฏฺฐึ โอโรเหยฺย อสฺสปิฏฺฐิยา
วา ปลฺลงฺกํ โอโรเหยฺย ปลฺลงฺกา วา ปฐวึ โอโรเหยฺย ปฐวิยา
วา อนฺธการํ ปวิเสยฺย✎ ร่าง
Seyyathāpi, mahārāja, puriso pāsādā vā hatthikkhandhaṁ oroheyya, hatthikkhandhā vā assapiṭṭhiṁ oroheyya, assapiṭṭhiyā vā pallaṅkaṁ oroheyya, pallaṅkā vā pathaviṁ oroheyya, pathaviyā vā andhakāraṁ paviseyya.
This individual is like someone who descends from a stilt longhouse to an elephant; from an elephant to horseback; from horseback to a couch; and from a couch to the ground; and from the ground they enter darkness.
ตถูปมาหํ มหาราช อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tathūpamāhaṁ, mahārāja, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi.
เอวํ โข มหาราช ปุคฺคโล โชติ ตมปรายโน โหติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ kho, mahārāja, puggalo jotitamaparāyano hoti.
That’s how an individual is light and bound for darkness.
