อิทมโวจ ภควา✎ ร่าง
Idamavoca bhagavā.
That is what the Buddha said.
อิทํ วตฺวาน สุคโต อถาปรํ
เอตทโวจ สตฺถา✎ ร่าง
Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:
Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
ปุริสสฺส หิ ขาตสฺส✎ ร่าง
“Purisassa hi jātassa,
“A man is born

กุธารี ชายเต มุเข✎ ร่าง
kuṭhārī jāyate mukhe;
with an axe in his mouth.
ยาย ฉินฺทติ อตฺตานํ✎ ร่าง
Yāya chindati attānaṁ,
A fool cuts themselves with it
พาโล ทุพฺภาสิตํ ภณํ✎ ร่าง
bālo dubbhāsitaṁ bhaṇaṁ.
when they say bad words.
โย นินฺทิยํ ปสํสติ✎ ร่าง
Yo nindiyaṁ pasaṁsati,
When you praise someone worthy of criticism,
ตํ วา นินฺทติ โย ปสํสิโย✎ ร่าง
Taṁ vā nindati yo pasaṁsiyo;
or criticize someone worthy of praise,
วิจินาติ มุเขน โส กลึ✎ ร่าง
Vicināti mukhena so kaliṁ,
you choose a losing hand with your own mouth:
กลินา เตน สุขํ น วินฺทติ✎ ร่าง
Kalinā tena sukhaṁ na vindati.
you’ll never find happiness that way.
อปฺปมตฺโต อยํ กลิ✎ ร่าง
Appamattako ayaṁ kali,
A losing hand at dice is a trivial thing,
โย อกฺเขสุ ธนปราชโย✎ ร่าง
Yo akkhesu dhanaparājayo;
if all you lose is your money
สพฺพสฺสาปิ สหาปิ อตฺตนา✎ ร่าง
Sabbassāpi sahāpi attanā,
and all you own, even yourself.
อยเมว มหนฺตตโร กลิ✎ ร่าง
Ayameva mahantaro kali;
What’s a really terrible hand
โย สุคเตสุ มนํ ปโทสเย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yo sugatesu manaṁ padosaye.
is to hate the holy ones.
สตํ สหสฺสาน นิรพฺพุทานํ✎ ร่าง
Sataṁ sahassānaṁ nirabbudānaṁ,
For a hundred thousand times a hundred million,
ฉตฺตึสติ ปญฺจ จ อพฺพุทานิ✎ ร่าง
Chattiṁsati pañca ca abbudāni;
times five hundred and thirty-six times a thousand times ten million years
ยมริเย ครหี นิรยํ อุเปติ✎ ร่าง
Yamariyagarahī nirayaṁ upeti,
a slanderer of noble ones goes to hell,
วาจํ มนญฺจ ปณิธาย ปาปกนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Vācaṁ manañca paṇidhāya pāpakan”ti.
having aimed bad words and thoughts at them.”
ปฐโม วคฺโค ฯ✎ ร่าง
Paṭhamo vaggo.
ตสฺสุทฺทานํ✎ ร่าง

อายาจนํ คารโว พฺรหฺมเทโว✎ ร่าง
Āyācanaṁ gāravo brahmadevo,
