Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu …pe… bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha … and asked him,

อมุกสฺมึ ภนฺเต วิหาเร อญฺญตโร ภิกฺขุ นโว อปฺปญฺญาโต
อาพาธิโก ทุกฺขิโต พาฬฺหคิลาโน✎ ร่าง
“amukasmiṁ, bhante, vihāre aññataro bhikkhu navo appaññāto ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno.
“Sir, in such and such a monastery there’s a mendicant who is junior and not well-known. He’s sick, suffering, gravely ill.
สาธุ ภนฺเต ภควา เยน
โส ภิกฺขุ เตนุปสงฺกมตุ อนุกมฺปํ อุปาทายาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sādhu, bhante, bhagavā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkamatu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti.
Please go to him out of sympathy.”
อถ โข ภควา
นวตรญฺจ สุตฺวา คิลานตรญฺจ อปฺปญฺญาโต ภิกฺขูติ อิติ วิทิตฺวา
เยน โส ภิกฺขุ เตนุปสงฺกมิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā navavādañca sutvā gilānavādañca, “appaññāto bhikkhū”ti iti viditvā yena so bhikkhu tenupasaṅkami.
When the Buddha heard that the mendicant was junior and ill, understanding that he was not well-known, he went to him.
อทฺทสา โข ภิกฺขุ ภควนฺตํ
ทูรโต ว อาคจฺฉนฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Addasā kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ.
That mendicant saw the Buddha coming off in the distance
ทิสฺวาน มญฺจเก สมเตสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Disvāna mañcake samadhosi.
and stirred in his cot.
อถ โข
ภควา ตํ ภิกฺขุํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā taṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:
Then the Buddha said to that monk,
อลํ ภิกฺขุ มา ตฺวํ มญฺจเก สมเตสิ✎ ร่าง
“alaṁ, bhikkhu, mā tvaṁ mañcake samadhosi.
“It’s all right, mendicant, don’t get up.
สนฺตีมานิ อาสนานิ ปญฺญตฺตานิ ตตฺถาหํ นิสีทิสฺสามีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Santimāni āsanāni paññattāni, tatthāhaṁ nisīdissāmī”ti.
There are some seats spread out, I will sit there.”
นิสีทิ
ภควา ปญฺญตฺเต อาสเน ฯ นิสชฺช โข ภควา ตํ ภิกฺขุํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Nisīdi bhagavā paññatte āsane. Nisajja kho bhagavā taṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:
He sat on the seat spread out and said to the mendicant,
กจฺจิ เต ภิกฺขุ ขมนียํ กจฺจิ ยาปนียํ กจฺจิ ทุกฺขา เวทนา ปฏิกฺกมนฺติ
โน อภิกฺกมนฺติ ปฏิกฺกโม สานํ ปญฺญายติ โน อภิกฺกโมติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“kacci te, bhikkhu, khamanīyaṁ, kacci yāpanīyaṁ, kacci dukkhā vedanā paṭikkamanti no abhikkamanti, paṭikkamosānaṁ paññāyati no abhikkamo”ti?
“I hope you’re keeping well, mendicant; I hope you’re all right. I hope that your pain is fading, not growing, that its fading is evident, not its growing.”
น เม ภนฺเต ขมนียํ น ยาปนียํ ฯเปฯ✎ ร่าง
“Na me, bhante, khamanīyaṁ, na yāpanīyaṁ …pe…
“Sir, I’m not keeping well, I’m not getting by. …
น โข เม
ภนฺเต อตฺตา สีลโต อุปวทตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
na kho maṁ, bhante, attā sīlato upavadatī”ti.
I have no reason to blame myself when it comes to ethical conduct.”
โน เจ กิร ตฺวํ ภิกฺขุ อตฺตา
สีลโต อุปทวติ อถ กิสฺมึ จ เต กุกฺกุจฺจํ โก จ วิปฺปฏิสาโรติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“No ce kira te, bhikkhu, attā sīlato upavadati, atha kiñca te kukkuccaṁ ko ca vippaṭisāro”ti?
“In that case, mendicant, why do you have remorse and regret?”
น ขฺวาหํ ภนฺเต สีลวิสุทฺธตฺถํ ภควตา ธมฺมํ เทสิตํ อาชานามีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Na khvāhaṁ, bhante, sīlavisuddhatthaṁ bhagavatā dhammaṁ desitaṁ ājānāmī”ti.
“Because I understand that the Buddha has not taught the Dhamma merely for the sake of ethical purity.”
โน เจ กิร ตฺวํ ภิกฺขุ สีลวิสุทฺธตฺถํ มยา ธมฺมํ เทสิตํ อาชานาสิ
อถ กิมตฺถํ จรหิ ตฺวํ ภิกฺขุ มยา ธมฺมํ เทสิตํ อาชานาสีติ✎ ร่าง
“No ce kira tvaṁ, bhikkhu, sīlavisuddhatthaṁ mayā dhammaṁ desitaṁ ājānāsi, atha kimatthaṁ carahi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, mayā dhammaṁ desitaṁ ājānāsī”ti?
“If that is so, what then do you understand to be the goal of teaching the Dhamma?”

“I understand that the Buddha has taught the Dhamma for the goal of complete extinguishment without grasping fuel.”

“Sādhu sādhu, bhikkhu.
“Good, good, mendicant!

Sādhu kho tvaṁ, bhikkhu, anupādāparinibbānatthaṁ mayā dhammaṁ desitaṁ ājānāsi.
It’s good that you understand that I’ve taught the Dhamma for the goal of complete extinguishment with no fuel for grasping.
