เอวมฺเม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.

เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สกฺเกสุ วิหรติ
กปิลวตฺถุสฺมึ นิโคฺรธาราเม ฯ✎ ร่าง
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ nigrodhārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery.
อถ โข มหานาโม สกฺโก เยน
ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ
นิสีทิ ฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข มหานาโม สกฺโก ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho mahānāmo sakko yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho mahānāmo sakko bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Mahānāma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
อิทํ ภนฺเต กปิลวตฺถุ อิทฺธญฺเจว ผีตญฺจ พหุชญฺญํ อากิณฺณมนุสฺสํ
สมฺพาธวิยูหํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“idaṁ, bhante, kapilavatthu iddhañceva phītañca bāhujaññaṁ ākiṇṇamanussaṁ sambādhabyūhaṁ.
“Sir, this Kapilavatthu is successful and prosperous, populous, full of people, with cramped cul-de-sacs.
โส ขฺวาหํ ภนฺเต ภควนฺตํ วา ปยิรุปาสิตฺวา
มโนภาวนีเย วา ภิกฺขู สายณฺหสมยํ กปิลวตฺถุํ ปวิสนฺโต✎ ร่าง
So khvāhaṁ, bhante, bhagavantaṁ vā payirupāsitvā manobhāvanīye vā bhikkhū sāyanhasamayaṁ kapilavatthuṁ pavisanto;
In the late afternoon, after paying homage to the Buddha or an esteemed mendicant, I enter Kapilavatthu.
ภนฺเตนปิ หตฺถินา สมาคจฺฉามิ✎ ร่าง
bhantenapi hatthinā samāgacchāmi;
I encounter a stray elephant,
ภนฺเตนปิ อสฺเสน สมาคจฺฉามิ✎ ร่าง
bhantenapi assena samāgacchāmi;
horse,
ภนฺเตนปิ รเถน สมาคจฺฉามิ✎ ร่าง
bhantenapi rathena samāgacchāmi;
chariot,
ภนฺเตนปิ สกเฏน สมาคจฺฉามิ✎ ร่าง
bhantenapi sakaṭena samāgacchāmi;
cart,
ภนฺเตนปิ ปุริเสน สมาคจฺฉามิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
bhantenapi purisena samāgacchāmi.
or person.
ตสฺส มยฺหํ ภนฺเต ตสฺมึ
สมเย มุสฺสเตว ภควนฺตํ อารพฺภ สติ มุสฺสติ ธมฺมํ อารพฺภ
สติ มุสฺสติ สงฺฆํ อารพฺภ สติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tassa mayhaṁ, bhante, tasmiṁ samaye mussateva bhagavantaṁ ārabbha sati, mussati dhammaṁ ārabbha sati, mussati saṅghaṁ ārabbha sati.
At that time I lose mindfulness regarding the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saṅgha.
ตสฺส มยฺหํ ภนฺเต เอวํ
โหติ✎ ร่าง
Tassa mayhaṁ, bhante, evaṁ hoti:
I think:
อิมมฺหิ จาหํ สมเย กาลํ กเรยฺยํ กา มยฺหํ คติ โก
อภิสมฺปราโยติ✎ ร่าง
‘imamhi cāhaṁ samaye kālaṁ kareyyaṁ, kā mayhaṁ gati, ko abhisamparāyo’”ti?
‘If I were to die at this time, where would I be reborn in my next life?’”

“Mā bhāyi, mahānāma, mā bhāyi, mahānāma.
“Do not fear, Mahānāma, do not fear!
