At one time the Buddha was staying near the Bhoga City, at the Ānanda Shrine.

“cattārome, bhikkhave, mahāpadese desessāmi,
“Mendicants, I will teach you the four great references.
ตํ สุณาถ สาธุกํ มนสิกโรถ ภาสิสฺสามีติ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.
Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

“Mendicants, what are the four great references?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṁ vadeyya:
Take a mendicant who says:
สมฺมุขา เมตํ อาวุโส ภควโต สุตํ สมฺมุขา ปฏิคฺคหิตํ🤖 AI จับคู่
‘sammukhā metaṁ, āvuso, bhagavato sutaṁ sammukhā paṭiggahitaṁ—
‘Reverend, I have heard and learned this in the presence of the Buddha:
อยํ ธมฺโม อยํ วินโย อิทํ สตฺถุสาสนนฺติ🤖 AI จับคู่
ayaṁ dhammo, ayaṁ vinayo, idaṁ satthusāsanan’ti.
this is the teaching, this is the training, this is the Teacher’s instruction.’

You should neither approve nor reject that mendicant’s statement.

ตานิ ปทพฺยญฺชนานิ สาธุกํ อุคฺคเหตฺวา สุตฺเต โอตาเรตพฺพานิ

Anabhinanditvā appaṭikkositvā tāni padabyañjanāni sādhukaṁ uggahetvā sutte otāretabbāni, vinaye sandassetabbāni.
Instead, having carefully memorized those words and phrases, you should make sure they fit in the discourse and are exhibited in the training.
ตานิ เจ สุตฺเต โอตาริยมานานิ
วินเย สนฺทสฺสิยมานานิ น เจว สุตฺเต โอตรนฺติ น วินเย

If they do not fit in the discourse and are not exhibited in the training, you should draw the conclusion:
อทฺธา อิทํ น เจว ตสฺส ภควโต
วจนํ อรหโต สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสฺส🤖 AI จับคู่
‘addhā idaṁ na ceva tassa bhagavato vacanaṁ arahato sammāsambuddhassa;
‘Clearly this is not the word of the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha.
อิมสฺส จ ภิกฺขุโน ทุคฺคหิตนฺติ🤖 AI จับคู่
imassa ca bhikkhuno duggahitan’ti.
It has been incorrectly memorized by that mendicant.’
อิติ หีทํ ภิกฺขเว ฉฑฺเฑยฺยาถ🤖 AI จับคู่
Iti hetaṁ, bhikkhave, chaḍḍeyyātha.
And so you should discard it.

You should neither approve nor reject that mendicant’s statement.
อนภินนฺทิตฺวา
อปฺปฏิกฺโกสิตฺวา ตานิ ปทพฺยญฺชนานิ สาธุกํ อุคฺคเหตฺวา
สุตฺเต โอตาเรตพฺพานิ วินเย สนฺทสฺเสตพฺพานิ🤖 AI จับคู่
Anabhinanditvā appaṭikkositvā tāni padabyañjanāni sādhukaṁ uggahetvā sutte otāretabbāni, vinaye sandassetabbāni.
Instead, having carefully memorized those words and phrases, you should make sure they fit in the discourse and are exhibited in the training.
ตานิ เจ สุตฺเต
โอตาริยมานานิ วินเย สนฺทสฺสิยมานานิ น เจว สุตฺเต โอตรนฺติ น
วินเย สนฺทิสฺสนฺติ นิฏฺฐเมตฺถ คนฺตพฺพํ🤖 AI จับคู่
Tāni ce sutte otāriyamānāni vinaye sandassiyamānāni na ceva sutte otaranti na vinaye sandissanti, niṭṭhamettha gantabbaṁ:
If they do not fit in the discourse and are not exhibited in the training, you should draw the conclusion:
อทฺธา อิทํ น เจว
ตสฺส ภควโต วจนํ อรหโต สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสฺส🤖 AI จับคู่
‘addhā idaṁ na ceva tassa bhagavato vacanaṁ arahato sammāsambuddhassa;
‘Clearly this is not the word of the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha.
ตสฺส จ เถรสฺส
ทุคฺคหิตนฺติ🤖 AI จับคู่
tassa ca therassa duggahitan’ti.
It has been incorrectly memorized by that senior mendicant.’
อิติ หีทํ ภิกฺขเว ฉฑฺเฑยฺยาถ🤖 AI จับคู่
Iti hetaṁ, bhikkhave, chaḍḍeyyātha.
And so you should discard it.
อิธ ปน ภิกฺขเว ภิกฺขุ เอวํ วเทยฺย🤖 AI จับคู่
Idha pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṁ vadeyya:
Take another mendicant who says:

ตสฺส เม เถรสฺส สมฺมุขา สุตํ สมฺมุขา

Tassa me therassa sammukhā sutaṁ sammukhā paṭiggahitaṁ—
I’ve heard and learned this in the presence of that senior mendicant:
อยํ ธมฺโม อยํ วินโย อิทํ สตฺถุสาสนนฺติ🤖 AI จับคู่
ayaṁ dhammo, ayaṁ vinayo, idaṁ satthusāsanan’ti.
this is the teaching, this is the training, this is the Teacher’s instruction.’

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro mahāpadesā”ti.
These are the four great references.”
