“Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, pañhabyākaraṇāni.
“Mendicants, there are these four ways of answering questions.
กตมานิ จตฺตาริ🤖 AI จับคู่
Katamāni cattāri?
What four?
อตฺถิ ภิกฺขเว ปโญฺห เอกํสพฺยากรณีโย🤖 AI จับคู่
Atthi, bhikkhave, pañho ekaṁsabyākaraṇīyo;
There is a question that should be answered categorically.
อตฺถิ ภิกฺขเว ปโญฺห
วิภชฺชพฺยากรณีโย🤖 AI จับคู่
atthi, bhikkhave, pañho vibhajjabyākaraṇīyo;
There is a question that should be answered analytically.
อตฺถิ ภิกฺขเว ปโญฺห ปฏิปุจฺฉาพฺยากรณีโย🤖 AI จับคู่
atthi, bhikkhave, pañho paṭipucchābyākaraṇīyo;
There is a question that should be answered with a counter-question.
อตฺถิ ภิกฺขเว ปโญฺห ฐปนีโย🤖 AI จับคู่
atthi, bhikkhave, pañho ṭhapanīyo.
There is a question that should be set aside.
อิมานิ โข ภิกฺขเว จตฺตาริ
ปญฺหพฺยากรณานีติ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri pañhabyākaraṇānīti.
These are the four ways of answering questions.
เอกํสวจนํ เอกํ🤖 AI จับคู่
Ekaṁsavacanaṁ ekaṁ,
One is stated categorically,
วิภชฺชวจนาปรํ🤖 AI จับคู่
vibhajjavacanāparaṁ;
another analytically,
ตติยํ ปฏิปุจฺเฉยฺย🤖 AI จับคู่
Tatiyaṁ paṭipuccheyya,
a third with a counter-question,
จตุตฺถํ ปน ฐาปเย ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
catutthaṁ pana ṭhāpaye.
while a fourth is set aside.
โย จ เนสํ ตตฺถ ตตฺถ🤖 AI จับคู่
Yo ca tesaṁ tattha tattha,
That sort of mendicant, who knows each of these,

jānāti anudhammataṁ;
in line with good principles,
จตุปญฺหสฺส กุสโล🤖 AI จับคู่
Catupañhassa kusalo,
is said to be skilled
อาหุ ภิกฺขุํ ตถาวิธํ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
āhu bhikkhuṁ tathāvidhaṁ.
in the four kinds of questions.
ทุราสโท ทุปฺปสโห🤖 AI จับคู่
Durāsado duppasaho,
They’re intimidating, hard to defeat,
คมฺภีโร ทุปฺปธํสิโย🤖 AI จับคู่
gambhīro duppadhaṁsiyo;
deep, and hard to crush.
อโถ อตฺเถ อนตฺเถ จ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atho atthe anatthe ca,
They’re expert in both
อุภยตฺถสฺส ๑- โกวิโท🤖 AI จับคู่
ubhayassa hoti kovido.
what the meaning is and what it isn’t.
อนตฺถํ ปริวชฺเชติ🤖 AI จับคู่
Anatthaṁ parivajjeti,
Shunning what is not the meaning,
อตฺถํ คณฺหาติ ปณฺฑิโต🤖 AI จับคู่
atthaṁ gaṇhāti paṇḍito;
an astute person grasps the meaning.
อตฺถาภิสมยา ธีโร🤖 AI จับคู่
Atthābhisamayā dhīro,
An attentive one, comprehending the meaning,
ปณฺฑิโตติ ปวุจฺจตีติ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
paṇḍitoti pavuccatī”ti.
is said to be astute.”
