Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

อายสฺมา จ สุมโน สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรนฺติ อนฺธวนสฺมึ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā ca khemo āyasmā ca sumano sāvatthiyaṁ viharanti andhavanasmiṁ.
Now at that time Venerable Khema and Venerable Sumana were staying near Sāvatthī in the Dark Forest.
อถ โข อายสฺมา
จ เขโม อายสฺมา จ สุมโน เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมึสุ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา
ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทึสุ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน
โข อายสฺมา เขโม ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha kho āyasmā ca khemo āyasmā ca sumano yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā khemo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then they went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. Venerable Khema said to the Buddha:
โย โส ภนฺเต ภิกฺขุ
อรหํ ขีณาสโว วุสิตวา กตกรณีโย โอหิตภาโร อนุปฺปตฺตสทตฺโถ
ปริกฺขีณภวสญฺโญชโน สมฺมทญฺญา วิมุตฺโต ตสฺส น เอวํ โหติ🤖 AI จับคู่
“Yo so, bhante, bhikkhu arahaṁ khīṇāsavo vusitavā katakaraṇīyo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhīṇabhavasaṁyojano sammadaññāvimutto tassa na evaṁ hoti:
“Sir, a mendicant who is perfected—with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their heart’s goal, utterly ended the fetter of continued existence, and is rightly freed through enlightenment—does not think:
อตฺถิ เม เสยฺโยติ วา อตฺถิ เม สทิโสติ วา อตฺถิ เม หีโนติ
วาติ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
‘atthi me seyyoti vā atthi me sadisoti vā atthi me hīnoti vā’”ti.
‘There is someone better than me, or equal to me, or worse than me.’”
อิทมโวจ อายสฺมา เขโม ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Idamavocāyasmā khemo.
That is what Khema said,
สมนุญฺโญ สตฺถา อโหสิ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Samanuñño satthā ahosi.
and the teacher approved.
อถ โข อายสฺมา เขโม สมนุญฺโญ เม สตฺถาติ อุฏฺฐายาสนา
ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา ปทกฺขิณํ กตฺวา ปกฺกามิ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha kho āyasmā khemo “samanuñño me satthā”ti uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.
Then Khema, knowing that the teacher approved, rose from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.
อถ โข อายสฺมา สุมโน อจิรปกฺกนฺเต อายสฺมนฺเต เขเม
ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha kho āyasmā sumano acirapakkante āyasmante kheme bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
And then, not long after Khema had left, Sumana said to the Buddha:

That is what Sumana said,
สมนุญฺโญ
สตฺถา อโหสิ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Samanuñño satthā ahosi.
and the teacher approved.

อถ โข ภควา อจิรปกฺกนฺเตสุ ๑- อายสฺมนฺเต จ เขเม อายสฺมนฺเต
จ สุมเน ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha kho bhagavā acirapakkantesu āyasmante ca kheme āyasmante ca sumane bhikkhū āmantesi:
And then, soon after Khema and Sumana had left, the Buddha addressed the mendicants:
เอวํ โข ภิกฺขเว กุลปุตฺตา อญฺญํ
พฺยากโรนฺติ🤖 AI จับคู่
“evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, kulaputtā aññaṁ byākaronti.
“Mendicants, this is how gentlemen declare enlightenment.
อตฺโถ จ วุตฺโต อตฺตา จ อนุปนีโต🤖 AI จับคู่
Attho ca vutto attā ca anupanīto.
The goal is spoken of, but the self is not involved.
อถ จ ปน
อิเธกจฺเจ โมฆปุริสา หสมานกา มญฺเญ อญฺญํ พฺยากโรนฺติ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha ca pana idhekacce moghapurisā hasamānakā maññe aññaṁ byākaronti.
But it seems that there are some futile men here who declare enlightenment as a joke.
เต ปจฺฉา วิฆาตํ อาปชฺชนฺตีติ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Te pacchā vighātaṁ āpajjantīti.
Later they will fall into distress.
น อุสฺเสสุ น โอเสสุ🤖 AI จับคู่
Na ussesu na omesu,
They don’t represent themselves
สมตฺเถ ๓- โนปนิยฺยเร🤖 AI จับคู่
Samatte nopanīyare;
as being among superiors, inferiors, or equals.
ขีณา สญฺชาติ ๔- วุสิตํ พฺรหฺมจริยํ🤖 AI จับคู่
Khīṇā jāti vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ,
Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed.
จรนฺติ
สญฺโญชนวิปฺปมุตฺตาติ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Caranti saṁyojanavippamuttā”ti.
They live freed from fetters.”
