อถ โข ภควา อายสฺมนฺตํ อานนฺทํ อามนฺเตสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ āmantesi:
Then the Buddha said to Venerable Ānanda,

อิมสฺสานนฺท อาคนฺตุกสฺส ภิกฺขุโน เสนาสนํ ปญฺญาเปหีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“imassānanda, āgantukassa bhikkhuno senāsanaṁ paññāpehī”ti.
“Prepare lodgings for this visiting mendicant.”
อถ โข อายสฺมโต อานนฺทสฺส เอตทโหสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmato ānandassa etadahosi:
Then Venerable Ānanda thought,
ยสฺส โข มํ ภควา
อาณาเปติ✎ ร่าง
“yassa kho maṁ bhagavā āṇāpeti:
“When the Buddha orders me
อิมสฺส อานนฺท อาคนฺตุกสฺส ภิกฺขุโน เสนาสนํ
ปญฺญาเปหีติ อิจฺฉติ ภควา เตน ภิกฺขุนา สทฺธึ เอกวิหาเร วตฺถุํ
อิจฺฉติ ภควา อายสฺมตา โสเณน สทฺธึ เอกวิหาเร วตฺถุนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘imassānanda, āgantukassa bhikkhuno senāsanaṁ paññāpehī’ti, icchati bhagavā tena bhikkhunā saddhiṁ ekavihāre vatthuṁ, icchati bhagavā āyasmatā soṇena saddhiṁ ekavihāre vatthun”ti.
to prepare lodgings for a specific mendicant, he wishes to stay in the same dwelling with that mendicant. The Buddha wishes to stay together with Venerable Soṇa.”
ยสฺมึ วิหาเร ภควา วิหรติ ตสฺมึ วิหาเร อายสฺมโต โสณสฺส
เสนาสนํ ปญฺญาเปสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yasmiṁ vihāre bhagavā viharati, tasmiṁ vihāre āyasmato soṇassa senāsanaṁ paññāpesi.
He prepared lodgings for Soṇa in the same dwelling where the Buddha was staying.
อถ โข ภควา พหุเทว รตฺตึ อพฺโภกาเส
นิปชฺชาย ๑- วีตินาเมตฺวา ปาเท ปกฺขาเลตฺวา วิหารํ ปาวิสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā bahudeva rattiṁ abbhokāse nisajjāya vītināmetvā pāde pakkhāletvā vihāraṁ pāvisi.
The Buddha spent much of the night sitting meditation in the open. Then he rose from his seat, washed his feet and entered the dwelling.

วีตินาเมตฺวา ปาเท ปกฺขาเลตฺวา วิหารํ ปาวิสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Āyasmāpi kho soṇo bahudeva rattiṁ abbhokāse nisajjāya vītināmetvā pāde pakkhāletvā vihāraṁ pāvisi.
Venerable Soṇa did the same.
อถ โข ภควา
รตฺติยา ปจฺจูสสมยํ ปจฺจุฏฺฐาย อายสฺมนฺตํ มหาโสณํ อชฺเฌสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā rattiyā paccūsasamayaṁ paccuṭṭhāya āyasmantaṁ soṇaṁ ajjhesi:
Then the Buddha rose at the crack of dawn and addressed Soṇa,
ปฏิภาตุ ตํ ภิกฺขุ ธมฺมํ ภาสิตุนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“paṭibhātu taṁ, bhikkhu, dhammo bhāsitun”ti.
“Speak some Dhamma, mendicant, as you feel inspired.”
เอวํ ภนฺเตติ โข อายสฺมา โสโณ ภควโต ปฏิสฺสุตฺวา
โสฬส อฏฺฐกวคฺคิกานิ สพฺพาเนว สเรน อภณิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā soṇo bhagavato paṭissutvā soḷasa aṭṭhakavaggikāni sabbāneva sarena abhaṇi.
“Yes, sir,” replied Soṇa. He intoned all sixteen discourses in the Chapter of the Eights.

อายสฺมโต โสณสสฺส สรภญฺญปริโยสาเน อพฺภานุโมทิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā āyasmato soṇassa sarabhaññapariyosāne abbhanumodi:
When Soṇa finished his intoning, the Buddha applauded, saying,
สาธุ สาธุ ภิกฺขุ
สุคฺคหิตานิ ภิกฺขุ อฏฺฐกวคฺคิกานิ สุมนสิกตานิ สุปธาริตานิ กลฺยาณิยาสิ
วาจาย สมนฺนาคโต วิสฏฺฐาย อเนลาย ๒- อตฺถสฺส วิญฺญาปนิยา✎ ร่าง
“sādhu sādhu, bhikkhu, suggahitāni te, bhikkhu, soḷasa aṭṭhakavaggikāni sumanasikatāni sūpadhāritāni, kalyāṇiyāsi vācāya samannāgato vissaṭṭhāya anelagaḷāya atthassa viññāpaniyā.
“Good, good, mendicant! You have learned the sixteen discourses of the Chapter of the Eights well, you have applied the mind and remembered it well. You are a good speaker, with a polished, clear, and articulate voice that expresses the meaning.
กติวสฺโสสิ ตฺวํ ภิกฺขูติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kati vassosi tvaṁ, bhikkhū”ti?
How many rains have you been ordained, mendicant?”
เอกวสฺโส อหํ ภควาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Ekavasso ahaṁ, bhagavā”ti.
“I have one rains, Blessed One.”

“Kissa pana tvaṁ, bhikkhu, evaṁ ciraṁ akāsī”ti?
“But why did it take you so long to make it?”
จิรํ ทิฏฺโฐ เม ภนฺเต กาเมสุ

“Ciraṁ diṭṭho me, bhante, kāmesu ādīnavo;
“Sir, I have long seen the drawbacks of sensual pleasures,
อปิ จ สมฺพาโธ ฆราวาโส พหุกิจฺโจ พหุกรณีโยติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
api ca sambādho gharāvāso bahukicco bahukaraṇīyo”ti.
yet living in a house is cramped, with many duties and much to do.”
อถ โข ภควา เอตมตฺถํ วิทิตฺวา ตายํ เวลายํ อิมํ อุทานํ

Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:
Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
ทิสฺวา อาทีนวํ โลเก✎ ร่าง
“Disvā ādīnavaṁ loke,
“Seeing the danger of the world,
ญตฺวา ธมฺมํ นิรูปธิ✎ ร่าง
ñatvā dhammaṁ nirūpadhiṁ;
I understood the truth without attachments.
อริโย น รมติ ปาเป✎ ร่าง
Ariyo na ramatī pāpe,
The Noble One does not delight in evil,
ปาเป น รมตี สุจีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
pāpe na ramatī sucī”ti.
the Pure One does not delight in evil.”
