[๑๓๑] เมื่อมารกราบทูลอย่างนี้แล้ว พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสกะมารผู้มี บาปนั้นว่า ดูกรมารผู้มีบาป ท่านจงเป็นผู้ขวนขวายน้อยเถิด ไม่นานนักตถาคต จักปรินิพพาน แต่นี้ล่วงไป ๓ เดือน ตถาคตจักปรินิพพาน ครั้งนั้นแล พระผู้ มีพระภาคมีพระสติสัมปชัญญะทรงปลงอายุสังขาร ณ ปาวาลเจดีย์ ก็เมื่อพระผู้ มีพระภาคทรงปลงอายุสังขารแล้ว แผ่นดินใหญ่หวั่นไหว น่าสะพรึงกลัว โลมชาติ ชูชัน และกลองทิพย์ก็บันลือลั่น ฯ ลำดับนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงทราบเนื้อความนี้แล้วได้ทรงเปล่งอุทาน นี้ในเวลานั้นว่า มุนีได้ปลงเครื่องปรุงแต่งภพอันเป็นเหตุสมภพทั้งที่ชั่งได้และ ชั่งไม่ได้ ยินดีแล้วในภายใน มีจิตตั้งมั่น ได้ทำลายกิเลสที่ เกิดในตนเหมือนทหารทำลายเกราะ ฉะนั้น ฯ

Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ etadavoca:

When this was said, the Buddha said to Māra,

ud6.1:14.2 #

อปฺโปสฺสุโก ตฺวํ ปาปิม โหหิ น จิรํ ตถาคตสฺส ปรินิพฺพานํ ภวิสฺสติ✎ ร่าง

“appossukko tvaṁ, pāpima, hohi. Na ciraṁ tathāgatassa parinibbānaṁ bhavissati.

“Relax, Wicked One. The full extinguishment of the Realized One will be soon.

ud6.1:14.3 #

อิโต ติณฺณํ มาสานํ อจฺจเยน ตถาคโต ปรินิพฺพายิสฺสตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง

Ito tiṇṇaṁ māsānaṁ accayena tathāgato parinibbāyissatī”ti.

Three months from now the Realized One will be fully extinguished.”

อถ โข ภควา ปาวาลเจติเย สโต สมฺปชาโน อายุสงฺขารํ โอสฺสชฺชิ ฯ✎ ร่าง

Atha kho bhagavā cāpāle cetiye sato sampajāno āyusaṅkhāraṁ ossaji.

So at the Cāpāla Shrine the Buddha, mindful and aware, surrendered the life force.

โอสฏฺเฐ จ ภควตา อายุสงฺขาเร มหาภูมิจาโล อโหสิ ภึสนโก โลมหํโส เทวทุนฺทุภิโย จ ผลึสุ ฯ✎ ร่าง

Ossaṭṭhe ca bhagavatā āyusaṅkhāre mahābhūmicālo ahosi bhiṁsanako lomahaṁso, devadundubhiyo ca phaliṁsu.

When he did so there was a great earthquake, awe-inspiring and hair-raising, and thunder cracked the sky.

อถ โข ภควา เอตมตฺถํ วิทิตฺวา ตายํ เวลายํ อิมํ อุทานํ อุทาเนสิ✎ ร่าง

Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

“Tulamatulañca sambhavaṁ,

“Comparing the incomparable with the creation of prolonged life,

Bhavasaṅkhāramavassaji muni;

the sage surrendered the life force.
