Gopālakasutta
The Cowherd
เอวมฺเม สุตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา โกสเลสุ จาริกํ
จรติ มหตา ภิกฺขุสงฺเฆน สทฺธึ ฯ✎ ร่าง
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosalesu cārikaṁ carati mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ.
At one time the Buddha was wandering in the land of the Kosalans together with a large Saṅgha of mendicants.
อถ โข ภควา มคฺคา โอกฺกมฺม
เยน อญฺญตรํ รุกฺขมูลํ เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ปญฺญตฺเต
อาสเน นิสีทิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā maggā okkamma yena aññataraṁ rukkhamūlaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.
And then the Buddha left the road, went to the root of a certain tree, and sat down on the seat spread out.
อถ โข อญฺญตโร โคปาลโก เยน ภควา

Atha kho aññataro gopālako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.
Then a certain cowherd went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side.

เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนํ โข ตํ โคปาลกํ ภควา ธมฺมิยา กถาย
สนฺทสฺเสสิ สมาทเปสิ สมุตฺเตเชสิ สมฺปหํเสสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho taṁ gopālakaṁ bhagavā dhammiyā kathāya sandassesi samādapesi samuttejesi sampahaṁsesi.
The Buddha educated, encouraged, fired up, and inspired him with a Dhamma talk.
อถ โข โส
โคปาลโก ภควโต ธมฺมิยา กถาย สนฺทสฺสิโต สมาทปิโต
สมุตฺเตชิโต สมฺปหํสิโต ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho so gopālako bhagavatā dhammiyā kathāya sandassito samādapito samuttejito sampahaṁsito bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then the cowherd said to the Buddha,
อธิวาเสตุ เม ภนฺเต
ภควา สฺวาตนาย ภตฺตํ สทฺธึ ภิกฺขุสงฺเฆนาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“adhivāsetu me, bhante, bhagavā svātanāya bhattaṁ saddhiṁ bhikkhusaṅghenā”ti.
“Sir, would the Buddha, together with the mendicant Saṅgha, please accept tomorrow’s meal from me?”
อธิวาเสสิ ภควา
ตุณฺหีภาเวน ฯ✎ ร่าง
Adhivāsesi bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena.
The Buddha consented with silence.
อถ โข โส โคปาลโก ภควโต อธิวาสนํ วิทิตฺวา
อุฏฺฐายาสนา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา ปทกฺขิณํ กตฺวา ปกฺกามิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho so gopālako bhagavato adhivāsanaṁ viditvā uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.
Then, knowing that the Buddha had consented, the cowherd rose from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.
อถ โข โส โคปาลโก ตสฺสา รตฺติยา อจฺจเยน สเก
นิเวสเน ปหุตํ อปฺโปทกปายาสํ ปฏิยาทาเปตฺวา นวญฺจ สปฺปึ ภควโต
กาลํ อาโรเจสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho so gopālako tassā rattiyā accayena sake nivesane pahūtaṁ appodakapāyāsaṁ paṭiyādāpetvā navañca sappiṁ bhagavato kālaṁ ārocesi:
And when the night had passed the cowherd had plenty of thick milk-rice prepared in his own home, with fresh ghee. Then he had the Buddha informed of the time, saying,
กาโล ภนฺเต นิฏฺฐิตํ ภตฺตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“kālo, bhante, niṭṭhitaṁ bhattan”ti.
“Sir, it’s time. The meal is ready.”
อถ โข ภควา
ปุพฺพณฺหสมยํ นิวาเสตฺวา ปตฺตจีวรมาทาย สทฺธึ ภิกฺขุสงฺเฆน เยน
ตสฺส โคปาลกสฺส นิเวสนํ เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ปญฺญตฺเต
อาสเน นิสีทิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya saddhiṁ bhikkhusaṅghena yena tassa gopālakassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.
The Buddha robed up, took his bowl and robe and, together with the Sangha of monks, went to the house of that cowherd, where he sat down on the prepared seat in the dining hall.

Atha kho so gopālako buddhappamukhaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ appodakapāyāsena navena ca sappinā sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi.
Then the cowherd served and satisfied the mendicant Saṅgha headed by the Buddha with his own hands with a thick milk-rice and fresh ghee.
อถ โข โส โคปาลโก ภควนฺตํ ภุตฺตาวึ โอนีตปตฺตปาณึ
อญฺญตรํ นีจํ อาสนํ คเหตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho so gopālako bhagavantaṁ bhuttāviṁ onītapattapāṇiṁ aññataraṁ nīcaṁ āsanaṁ gahetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.
When the Buddha had eaten and washed his hand and bowl, the cowherd took a low seat and sat to one side.
เอกมนฺตํ
นิสินฺนํ โข ตํ โคปาลกํ ภควา ธมฺมิยา กถาย สนฺทสฺเสตฺวา
สมาทเปตฺวา สมุตฺเตเชตฺวา สมฺปหํเสตฺวา อุฏฺฐายาสนา ปกฺกามิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho taṁ gopālakaṁ bhagavā dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṁsetvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi.
The Buddha then instructed, inspired, and gladdened him with a teaching, after which he got up and left.
