เอวมฺเม สุตํ เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน
อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเม ฯ✎ ร่าง
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
อถ โข อายสฺมโต มาลุงฺกฺยปุตฺตสฺส
รโหคตสฺส ปฏิสลฺลีนสฺส เอวํ เจตโส ปริวิตกฺโก อุทปาทิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmato mālukyaputtassa rahogatassa paṭisallīnassa evaṁ cetaso parivitakko udapādi:
Then as Venerable Māluṅkyaputta was in private retreat this thought came to his mind:
ยานีมานิ ทิฏฺฐิคตานิ ภควตา อพฺยากตานิ ฐปิตานิ ปฏิกฺขิตฺตานิ✎ ร่าง
“yānimāni diṭṭhigatāni bhagavatā abyākatāni ṭhapitāni paṭikkhittāni:
“There are several convictions that the Buddha has left undeclared; he has set them aside and turned them down.
สสฺสโต โลโกติปิ อสสฺสโต โลโกติปิ อนฺตวา โลโกติปิ
อนนฺตวา โลโกติปิ ตํ ชีวํ ตํ สรีรนฺติปิ อญฺญํ ชีวํ อญฺญํ
สรีรนฺติปิ โหติ ตถาคโต ปรมฺมรณาติปิ น โหติ ตถาคโต
ปรมฺมรณาติปิ โหติ จ น จ โหติ ตถาคโต ปรมฺมรณาติปิ
เนว โหติ น น โหติ ตถาคโต ปรมฺมรณาติปิ✎ ร่าง
‘sassato loko’tipi, ‘asassato loko’tipi, ‘antavā loko’tipi, ‘anantavā loko’tipi, ‘taṁ jīvaṁ taṁ sarīran’tipi, ‘aññaṁ jīvaṁ aññaṁ sarīran’tipi, ‘hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipi, ‘na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipi, ‘hoti ca na ca hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipi, ‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’tipi—
For example: the cosmos is eternal, or not eternal, or finite, or infinite; the soul and the body are one and the same, or the soul is one thing, the body another; after death, a realized one still exists, or no longer exists, or both still exists and no longer exists, or neither still exists nor no longer exists.
ตานิ เม
ภควา น พฺยากโรติ✎ ร่าง
tāni me bhagavā na byākaroti.
The Buddha does not explain these points to me.
ยานิ เม ภควา น พฺยากโรติ ตมฺเม น
รุจฺจติ ตมฺเม นกฺขมติ✎ ร่าง
Yāni me bhagavā na byākaroti taṁ me na ruccati, taṁ me nakkhamati.
I don’t endorse that, and do not accept it.
โสหํ ภควนฺตํ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา เอตมตฺถํ
ปุจฺฉิสฺสามิ✎ ร่าง
Sohaṁ bhagavantaṁ upasaṅkamitvā etamatthaṁ pucchissāmi.
I’ll go to him and ask him about this.
สเจ เม ภควา พฺยากริสฺสติ✎ ร่าง
Sace me bhagavā byākarissati:
If he gives me a straight answer on any of these points,
สสฺสโต โลโกติ วา
ฯเปฯ✎ ร่าง
‘sassato loko’ti vā ‘asassato loko’ti vā …pe…
เนว โหติ น น โหติ ตถาคโต ปรมฺมรณาติ วา✎ ร่าง
‘neva hoti na na hoti tathāgato paraṁ maraṇā’ti vā—
เอวาหํ
ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ จริสฺสามิ✎ ร่าง
evāhaṁ bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ carissāmi;
I will lead the spiritual life under him.
โน เจ✎ ร่าง
no ce me bhagavā byākarissati:
If he does not explain these points to me,
