Ekamidāhaṁ, mahārāja, samayaṁ tattheva vegaḷiṅge nāma gāmanigame viharāmi.
Another time, great king, I was staying near that same market town of Vebhaliṅga.

เตน โข ปน สมเยน กุฏิ โอวสฺสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tena kho pana samayena kuṭi ovassati.
Now at that time my hut leaked.
อถ
ขฺวาหํ มหาราช ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสึ✎ ร่าง
Atha khvāhaṁ, mahārāja, bhikkhū āmantesiṁ:
So I addressed the mendicants,
คจฺฉถ ภิกฺขเว ฆฏิการสฺส
กุมฺภการสฺส นิเวสเน ติณํ ชานาถาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“gacchatha, bhikkhave, ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa nivesane tiṇaṁ jānāthā”ti.
“Mendicants, go to Ghaṭīkāra’s home and find some grass.”
เอวํ วุตฺเต มหาราช

เต ภิกฺขู มํ เอตทโวจุํ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ vutte, mahārāja, te bhikkhū maṁ etadavocuṁ:
When I said this, those mendicants said to me,
นตฺถิ โข ภนฺเต ฆฏิการสฺส กุมฺภการสฺส
นิเวสเน ติณํ อตฺถิ จ ขฺวาสฺส อาเวสนํ ติณจฺฉทนนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“natthi kho, bhante, ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa nivesane tiṇaṁ, atthi ca khvāssa āvesane tiṇacchadanan”ti.
“Sir, there’s no grass there, but his workshop has a grass roof.”
คจฺฉถ ภิกฺขเว ฆฏิการสฺส กุมฺภการสฺส อาเวสนํ อุตฺติณํ
กโรถาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Gacchatha, bhikkhave, ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa āvesanaṁ uttiṇaṁ karothā”ti.
“Then go to the workshop and strip the grass.”
อถ โข เต มหาราช ภิกฺขู ฆฏิการสฺส กุมฺภการสฺส
อาเวสนํ อุตฺติณมกํสุ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho te, mahārāja, bhikkhū ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa āvesanaṁ uttiṇamakaṁsu.
So that’s what they did.
อถ โข มหาราช ฆฏิการสฺส
กุมฺภการสฺส มาตาปิตโร เต ภิกฺขู เอตทโวจุํ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho, mahārāja, ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa mātāpitaro te bhikkhū etadavocuṁ:
Then Ghaṭīkāra’s parents said to those mendicants,
เก อาเวสนํ
อุตฺติณํ กโรนฺตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“ke āvesanaṁ uttiṇaṁ karontī”ti?
“Who’s stripping the grass from the workshop?”
ภิกฺขู ภคินิ กสฺสปสฺส ภควโต อรหโต
สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสฺส กุฏิ โอวสฺสตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Bhikkhū, bhagini, kassapassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa kuṭi ovassatī”ti.
“It’s the mendicants, sister. The Buddha’s hut is leaking.”
หรถ ภนฺเต หรถ ภทฺรมุขาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Haratha, bhante, haratha, bhadramukhā”ti.
“Take it, sirs! Take it, dearest ones!”
อถ โข มหาราช ฆฏิกาโร กุมฺภกาโร เยน
มาตาปิตโร เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา มาตาปิตโร เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho, mahārāja, ghaṭikāro kumbhakāro yena mātāpitaro tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā mātāpitaro etadavoca:
Then Ghaṭīkāra went up to his parents and said,
เก
อาเวสนํ อุตฺติณมกํสูติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“ke āvesanaṁ uttiṇamakaṁsū”ti?
“Who stripped the grass from the workshop?”
ภิกฺขู ตาต กสฺสปสฺส กิร ภควโต
อรหโต สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสฺส กุฏิ โอวสฺสตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Bhikkhū, tāta, kassapassa kira bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa kuṭi ovassatī”ti.
“It was the mendicants, dear. It seems the Buddha’s hut is leaking.”
อถ โข มหาราช
ฆฏิการสฺส กุมฺภการสฺส เอตทโหสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho, mahārāja, ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa etadahosi:
Then Ghaṭīkāra thought,
ลาภา วต เม สุลทฺธํ วต
เม✎ ร่าง
“lābhā vata me, suladdhaṁ vata me,
“I’m so fortunate, so very fortunate,
ยสฺส เม กสฺสโป ภควา อรหํ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺโธ เอวํ
อภิวิสฺสฏฺโฐติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
yassa me kassapo bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho evaṁ abhivissattho”ti.
to be trusted so much by the Buddha Kassapa!”
อถ โข มหาราช ฆฏิการํ กุมฺภการํ อฑฺฒมาสํ
ปีติสุขํ น วิชหิ สตฺตาหํ มาตาปิตูนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho, mahārāja, ghaṭikāraṁ kumbhakāraṁ aḍḍhamāsaṁ pītisukhaṁ na vijahati, sattāhaṁ mātāpitūnaṁ.
Then joy and happiness did not leave him for a fortnight, or his parents for a week.
อถ โข ตํ มหาราช
อาเวสนํ สพฺพํ เตมาสํ อากาสจฺฉทนํ อฏฺฐาสิ น จาติวสฺสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho, mahārāja, āvesanaṁ sabbantaṁ temāsaṁ ākāsacchadanaṁ aṭṭhāsi, na devotivassi.
Then the workshop remained with the atmosphere for a roof for the whole three months, but the heavens did not rain on it.
เอวรูโป จ มหาราช ฆฏิกาโร กุมฺภกาโรติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Evarūpo ca, mahārāja, ghaṭikāro kumbhakāro’ti.
And that, great king, is what Ghaṭīkāra the potter is like.’
ลาภา ภนฺเต
ฆฏิการสฺส กุมฺภการสฺส สุลทฺธํ ภนฺเต ฆฏิการสฺส กุมฺภการสฺส✎ ร่าง
‘Lābhā, bhante, ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa, suladdhā, bhante, ghaṭikārassa kumbhakārassa
‘Ghaṭīkāra the potter is fortunate, very fortunate,
ยสฺส ภควา เอวํ อภิวิสฺสฏฺโฐติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
yassa bhagavā evaṁ abhivissattho’ti.
to be so trusted by the Buddha Kassapa.’
