อิทมโวจ ภควา✎ ร่าง
Idamavoca bhagavā.
That is what the Buddha said.
อิทํ วตฺวาน สุคโต อถาปรํ
เอตทโวจ สตฺถา✎ ร่าง
Idaṁ vatvāna sugato athāparaṁ etadavoca satthā:
Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
ขตฺติยํ ชาติสมฺปนฺนํ✎ ร่าง
“Khattiyaṁ jātisampannaṁ,
“A man should not despise
อภิชาตํ ยสสฺสินํ✎ ร่าง
abhijātaṁ yasassinaṁ;
an aristocrat of impeccable lineage,
ทหโรติ นาวชาเนยฺย✎ ร่าง
Daharoti nāvajāneyya,
high-born and famous,
น นํ ปริภเว นโร✎ ร่าง
na naṁ paribhave naro.
just because they’re young.
ฐานมฺหิ โส มนุสฺสินฺโท✎ ร่าง
Ṭhānañhi so manujindo,
For it’s possible that that lord of mankind,

รชฺชํ ลทฺธาน ขตฺติโย✎ ร่าง
rajjaṁ laddhāna khattiyo;
as aristocrat, will gain the throne.
โส กุทฺโธ ราชทณฺเฑน✎ ร่าง
So kuddho rājadaṇḍena,
And in his anger he’ll execute a royal punishment,
ตสฺมึ ปกฺกมเต ภุสํ✎ ร่าง
tasmiṁ pakkamate bhusaṁ;
and have you violently beaten.
ตสฺมา ตํ ปริวชฺเชยฺย✎ ร่าง
Tasmā taṁ parivajjeyya,
Hence you should avoid him
รกฺขํ ชีวิตมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
rakkhaṁ jīvitamattano.
for the sake of your own life.
คาเม วา ยทิ วารญฺเญ✎ ร่าง
Gāme vā yadi vā raññe,
Whether in village or wilderness,
ยตฺถ ปสฺเส ภุชงฺคมํ✎ ร่าง
yattha passe bhujaṅgamaṁ;
wherever a serpent is seen,
ทหโรติ นาวชาเนยฺย✎ ร่าง
Daharoti nāvajāneyya,
a man should not look down on it
น นํ ปริภเว นโร✎ ร่าง
na naṁ paribhave naro.
or despise it for its youth.
อุจฺจาวเจหิ วณฺเณหิ✎ ร่าง
Uccāvacehi vaṇṇehi,
With its rainbow of colors,

อุรโค จรติ เตชสี✎ ร่าง
urago carati tejasī;
the serpent of fiery breath glides along.
โส อาสชฺช ฑํเส พาลํ✎ ร่าง
So āsajja ḍaṁse bālaṁ,
It lashes out and bites the fool,
นรํ นาริญฺจ เอกทา✎ ร่าง
naraṁ nāriñca ekadā;
both men and women alike.
ตสฺมา ตํ ปริวชฺเชยฺย✎ ร่าง
Tasmā taṁ parivajjeyya,
Hence you should avoid it
รกฺขํ ชีวิตมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
rakkhaṁ jīvitamattano.
for the sake of your own life.
ปหูตภกฺขํ ชาลินํ✎ ร่าง
Pahūtabhakkhaṁ jālinaṁ,
A fire devours a huge amount,
ปาวกํ กณฺหวตฺตนึ✎ ร่าง
pāvakaṁ kaṇhavattaniṁ;
a conflagration with a blackened trail.
ทหโรติ นาวชาเนยฺย✎ ร่าง
Daharoti nāvajāneyya,
A man should not look down on it
น นํ ปริภเว นโร✎ ร่าง
na naṁ paribhave naro.
just because it’s young.
ลทฺธา หิ โส อุปาทานํ✎ ร่าง
Laddhā hi so upādānaṁ,
For once it gets fuel
มหา หุตฺวาน ปาวโก✎ ร่าง
mahā hutvāna pāvako;
it’ll become a huge conflagration.
โส อาสชฺช ฑเห พาลํ✎ ร่าง
So āsajja ḍahe bālaṁ,
It’ll lash out and burn the fool,
นรํ นาริญฺจ เอกทา✎ ร่าง
naraṁ nāriñca ekadā;
both men and women alike.
ตสฺมา ตํ ปริวชฺเชยฺย✎ ร่าง
Tasmā taṁ parivajjeyya,
Hence you should avoid it
รกฺขํ ชีวิตมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
rakkhaṁ jīvitamattano.
for the sake of your own life.
วนํ ยทคฺคิ ฑหติ✎ ร่าง
Vanaṁ yadaggi ḍahati,
When a forest is burned by fire,
ปาวโก กณฺหวตฺตนี✎ ร่าง
pāvako kaṇhavattanī;
a conflagration with a blackened trail,
ชายนฺติ ตตฺถ ปาโรหา✎ ร่าง
Jāyanti tattha pārohā,
the shoots will spring up there again,
อโหรตฺตานมจฺจเย✎ ร่าง
ahorattānamaccaye.
with the passing of the days and nights.
ยญฺจ โข สีลสมฺปนฺโน✎ ร่าง
Yañca kho sīlasampanno,
But if a mendicant endowed with ethics
อ้างอิงฉัฏฐสังคายนา 23.86
ภิกฺขุ ฑหติ เตชสา✎ ร่าง
bhikkhu ḍahati tejasā;
burns you with their power,
น ตสฺส ปุตฺตา ปสโว✎ ร่าง
Na tassa puttā pasavo,
you’ll have no children or livestock,
ทายาทา วินฺทเร ธนํ✎ ร่าง
dāyādā vindare dhanaṁ;
nor will your heirs find wealth.
อนปจฺจา อทายาทา✎ ร่าง
Anapaccā adāyādā,
Childless and heirless you become,
ตาลวตฺถุ ภวนฺติ เต✎ ร่าง
tālāvatthū bhavanti te.
like a palm-tree stump.
ตสฺมา หิ ปณฺฑิโต โปโส✎ ร่าง
Tasmā hi paṇḍito poso,
That’s why an astute person,
สมฺปสฺสํ ภยมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
sampassaṁ atthamattano;
seeing what’s good for themselves,
ภุชงฺคมํ ปาวกญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Bhujaṅgamaṁ pāvakañca,
would always treat these properly:
ขตฺติยญฺจ ยสสฺสินํ✎ ร่าง
khattiyañca yasassinaṁ;
a snake, a conflagration,
ภิกฺขุญฺจ สีลสมฺปนฺนํ✎ ร่าง
Bhikkhuñca sīlasampannaṁ,
a famous aristocrat,
สมฺมเทว สมาจเรติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sammadeva samācare”ti.
and a mendicant endowed with ethics.”
