อถ โข ภควา มาโร อยํ ปาปิมา อิติ วิทิตฺวา
มารํ ปาปิมนฺตํ คาถาหิ อชฺฌภาสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā “māro ayaṁ pāpimā” iti viditvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:
Then the Buddha, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, replied to him in verse:
โย สุญฺญเคหานิ เสวติ✎ ร่าง
“Yo suññagehāni sevati,
“A self-controlled sage frequents
เสยฺยา ๒- โส มุนิ อตฺตสญฺญโต✎ ร่าง
Seyyā so muni attasaññato;
empty buildings for lodging.
โวสฺสชฺช จเรยฺย ตตฺถ โส✎ ร่าง
Vossajja careyya tattha so,
It’s appropriate for that sort
ปฏิรูปญฺหิ ตถาวิธสฺส ตํ✎ ร่าง
Patirūpañhi tathāvidhassa taṁ.
to live there after relinquishing.
จรกา พหู เภรวา พหู✎ ร่าง
Carakā bahū bheravā bahū,
Though there are lots of creepy crawlies,
อโถ ฑํสสิรึสปา พหู✎ ร่าง
Atho ḍaṁsasarīsapā bahū;
and lots of flies and reptiles,
โลมมฺปิ น ตตฺถ อิญฺชเย✎ ร่าง
Lomampi na tattha iñjaye,
they wouldn’t stir a hair
สุญฺญาคารคโต มหา มุนิ✎ ร่าง
Suññāgāragato mahāmuni.
of a great sage in that empty hut.
นภํ ผเลยฺย ปฐวี จเลยฺย✎ ร่าง
Nabhaṁ phaleyya pathavī caleyya,
Though the firmament may split and the earth may quake,

สพฺเพว ๑- ปาณา อุท สนฺตเสยฺยุํ✎ ร่าง
Sabbepi pāṇā uda santaseyyuṁ;
and all creatures be stricken with fear;
สลฺลมฺปิ เจ อุรสิ กมฺปเสยฺยุํ✎ ร่าง
Sallampi ce urasi pakappayeyyuṁ,
and even if an arrow’s aimed at their breast,
อุปธีสุ ตาณํ น กโรนฺติ พุทฺธาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Upadhīsu tāṇaṁ na karonti buddhā”ti.
the Buddhas take no shelter in attachments.”
อถ โข มาโร ปาปิมา ชานาติ มํ ภควา ชานาติ มํ สุคโตติ
ทุกฺขี ทุมฺมโน ตตฺเถวนฺตรธายีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho māro pāpimā “jānāti maṁ bhagavā, jānāti maṁ sugato”ti dukkhī dummano tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, “The Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!” miserable and sad, vanished right there.
