อถ โข ภารทฺวาชโคตฺโต พฺราหฺมโณ เตหิ มาณวเกหิ
สทฺธึ เยน โส วนสณฺโฑ เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhāradvājagotto brāhmaṇo tehi māṇavakehi saddhiṁ yena so vanasaṇḍo tenupasaṅkami.
Then Bhāradvāja together with those young students went to that forest grove
อทฺทส ๑-
ภควนฺตํ ตสฺมึ วนสณฺเฑ นิสินฺนํ ปลฺลงฺกํ อาภุชิตฺวา อุชุํ กายํ
ปณิธาย ปริมุขํ สตึ อุปฏฺฐเปตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Addasā kho bhagavantaṁ tasmiṁ vanasaṇḍe nisinnaṁ pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā.
where he saw the Buddha sitting down cross-legged, his body set straight, and mindfulness brought to the present.
ทิสฺวาน เยน ภควา
เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ คาถาย อชฺฌภาสิ✎ ร่าง
Disvāna yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
He went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse:
คมฺภีรรูเป พหุเภรเว วเน✎ ร่าง
“Gambhīrarūpe bahubherave vane,
“Deep in the jungle so full of terrors,
สุญฺญํ อรญฺญํ วิชนํ วิคาหิย✎ ร่าง
Suññaṁ araññaṁ vijanaṁ vigāhiya;
you’ve plunged into the empty, desolate wilderness.
อนิญฺชมาเนน หิเตน วคฺคุนา✎ ร่าง
Aniñjamānena ṭhitena vaggunā,
Still, steady, and graceful:
สุจารุรูปํ วต ภิกฺขุ ฌายสิ✎ ร่าง
Sucārurūpaṁ vata bhikkhu jhāyasi.
how beautifully you meditate, mendicant!
น ยตฺถ คีตํ นปิ ยตฺถ วาทิตํ✎ ร่าง
Na yattha gītaṁ napi yattha vāditaṁ,
Where there is no song or music,
เอโก อรญฺเญ วนวสฺสิโต มุนิ✎ ร่าง
Eko araññe vanavassito muni;
a lonely sage resorts to the wilderness.
อจฺเฉรรูปํ ปฏิภาติ มํ อิทํ✎ ร่าง
Accherarūpaṁ paṭibhāti maṁ idaṁ,
This strikes me as an amazing thing,
ยเทกโก ปีติมโน วเน วเส✎ ร่าง
Yadekako pītimano vane vase.
that you dwell so joyfully alone in the jungle.
มญฺญามหํ โลกาธิปติสหพฺยตํ✎ ร่าง
Maññāmahaṁ lokādhipatisahabyataṁ,
I suppose you wish to be reborn in the company

อากงฺขมาโน ติทิวํ อนุตฺตรํ✎ ร่าง
Ākaṅkhamāno tidivaṁ anuttaraṁ;

กสฺมา ภวํ วิชนมรญฺญมสฺสิโต✎ ร่าง
Kasmā bhavaṁ vijanamaraññamassito,
Is that why you resort to the desolate wilderness,
ตโป อิธ กุพฺพติ ๑- พฺรหฺมปตฺติยาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tapo idha kubbasi brahmapattiyā”ti.
to practice fervor for attaining divinity?”
