Bhagavā etadavoca:
The Buddha said this:
ภูตปุพฺพํ ภิกฺขเว เทวาสุรสงฺคาโม
สมุปพฺยูโฬฺห อโหสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, devāsurasaṅgāmo samupabyūḷho ahosi.
“Once upon a time, mendicants, a battle was fought between the gods and the titans.

อถ โข ภิกฺขเว สกฺโก เทวานมินฺโท
เทเว ตาวตึเส อามนฺเตสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṁse āmantesi:
Then Sakka, lord of gods, addressed the gods of the thirty-three:
สเจ มาริสา เทวานํ สงฺคามคตานํ
อุปฺปชฺเชยฺย ภยํ วา ฉมฺภิตตฺตํ วา โลมหํโส วา มเมว ตสฺมึ
สมเย ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลเกยฺยาถ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Sace, mārisā, devānaṁ saṅgāmagatānaṁ uppajjeyya bhayaṁ vā chambhitattaṁ vā lomahaṁso vā, mameva tasmiṁ samaye dhajaggaṁ ullokeyyātha.
‘Good fellows, when the gods are fighting, if you get scared or terrified, just look up at my banner’s crest.
มมญฺหิ โว ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลกยตํ
ยมฺภวิสฺสติ ภยํ วา ฉมฺภิตตฺตํ วา โลมหํโส วา โส ปหียิสฺสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Mamañhi vo dhajaggaṁ ullokayataṁ yaṁ bhavissati bhayaṁ vā chambhitattaṁ vā lomahaṁso vā, so pahīyissati.
Then your fear and terror will go away.
โน เจ เม ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลเกยฺยาถ อถ ปชาปติสฺส เทวราชสฺส
ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลเกยฺยาถ ฯ✎ ร่าง
No ce me dhajaggaṁ ullokeyyātha, atha pajāpatissa devarājassa dhajaggaṁ ullokeyyātha.
If you can’t see my banner’s crest, then look up at the banner’s crest of the Progenitor, king of gods.
ปชาปติสฺส หิ โว เทวราชสฺส ธชคฺคํ
อุลฺโลกยตํ ยมฺภวิสฺสติ ภยํ วา ฉมฺภิตตฺตํ วา โลมหํโส วา โส
ปหียิสฺสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pajāpatissa hi vo devarājassa dhajaggaṁ ullokayataṁ yaṁ bhavissati bhayaṁ vā chambhitattaṁ vā lomahaṁso vā, so pahīyissati.
Then your fear and terror will go away.
โน เจ ปชาปติสฺส เทวราชสฺส ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลเกยฺยาถ
อถ วรุณสฺส เทวราชสฺส ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลเกยฺยาถ ฯ✎ ร่าง
No ce pajāpatissa devarājassa dhajaggaṁ ullokeyyātha, atha varuṇassa devarājassa dhajaggaṁ ullokeyyātha.
If you can’t see his banner’s crest, then look up at the banner’s crest of Varuṇa, king of gods.
วรุณสฺส หิ โว
เทวราชสฺส ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลกยตํ ยมฺภวิสฺสติ ภยํ วา ฉมฺภิตตฺตํ วา
โลมหํโส วา โส ปหียิสฺสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Varuṇassa hi vo devarājassa dhajaggaṁ ullokayataṁ yaṁ bhavissati bhayaṁ vā chambhitattaṁ vā lomahaṁso vā, so pahīyissati.
Then your fear and terror will go away.
โน เจ วรุณสฺส เทวราชสฺส ธชคฺคํ
อุลฺโลเกยฺยาถ อถ อีสานสฺส เทวราชสฺส ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลเกยฺยาถ ฯ✎ ร่าง
No ce varuṇassa devarājassa dhajaggaṁ ullokeyyātha, atha īsānassa devarājassa dhajaggaṁ ullokeyyātha.
If you can’t see his banner’s crest, then look up at the banner’s crest of Īsāna, king of gods.
อีสานสฺส หิ โว เทวราชสฺส ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลกยตํ ยมฺภวิสฺสติ ภยํ
วา ฉมฺภิตตฺตํ วา โลมหํโส วา โส ปหียิสฺสตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Īsānassa hi vo devarājassa dhajaggaṁ ullokayataṁ yaṁ bhavissati bhayaṁ vā chambhitattaṁ vā lomahaṁso vā, so pahīyissatī’ti.
Then your fear and terror will go away.’
ตํ โข ปน
ภิกฺขเว สกฺกสฺส วา เทวานมินฺทสฺส ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลกยตํ ปชาปติสฺส
วา เทวราชสฺส ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลกยตํ วรุณสฺส วา เทวราชสฺส
ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลกยตํ อีสานสฺส วา เทวราชสฺส ธชคฺคํ อุลฺโลกยตํ
ยมฺภวิสฺสติ ภยํ วา ฉมฺภิตตฺตํ วา โลมหํโส วา โส ปหีเยถาปิ
โนปิ ปหีเยถ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ kho pana, bhikkhave, sakkassa vā devānamindassa dhajaggaṁ ullokayataṁ, pajāpatissa vā devarājassa dhajaggaṁ ullokayataṁ, varuṇassa vā devarājassa dhajaggaṁ ullokayataṁ, īsānassa vā devarājassa dhajaggaṁ ullokayataṁ yaṁ bhavissati bhayaṁ vā chambhitattaṁ vā lomahaṁso vā, so pahīyethāpi nopi pahīyetha.
However, when they look up at those banner’s crests their fear and terror might go away or it might not.

Sakko hi, bhikkhave, devānamindo avītarāgo avītadoso avītamoho bhīru chambhī utrāsī palāyīti.
Because Sakka is not free of greed, hate, and delusion. He is fearful, scared, nervous, quick to flee.
