ภควา เอตทโวจ ภูตปุพฺพํ ภิกฺขเว เทวาสุรสงฺคาโม
สมุปพฺยูโฬฺห อโหสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, devāsurasaṅgāmo samupabyūḷho ahosi.
“Once upon a time, mendicants, a battle was fought between the gods and the titans.
อถ โข ภิกฺขเว เวปจิตฺติ อสุรินฺโท
สกฺกํ เทวานมินฺทํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ etadavoca:
Then Vepacitti, lord of titans, said to Sakka, lord of gods,
โหตุ เทวานมินฺท สุภาสิเตน ชโยติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘hotu, devānaminda, subhāsitena jayo’ti.
‘Lord of gods, let there be victory by fine words!’
โหตุ เวปจิตฺติ สุภาสิเตน ชโยติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Hotu, vepacitti, subhāsitena jayo’ti.
‘Vepacitti, let there be victory by fine words!’
อถ โข ภิกฺขเว เทวา จ อสุรา
จ ปาริสชฺเช ฐเปสุํ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho, bhikkhave, devā ca asurā ca pārisajje ṭhapesuṁ:
Then the gods and the titans appointed a panel of judges, saying,
อิเม โน สุภาสิตํ ทุพฺภาสิตํ อาชานิสฺสนฺตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘ime no subhāsitadubbhāsitaṁ ājānissantī’ti.
‘These will understand our good and bad statements.’
อถ โข ภิกฺขเว เวปจิตฺติ อสุรินฺโท สกฺกํ เทวานมินฺทํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho, bhikkhave, vepacitti asurindo sakkaṁ devānamindaṁ etadavoca:
Then Vepacitti, lord of titans, said to Sakka, lord of gods,
ภณ เทวานมินฺท คาถนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘bhaṇa, devānaminda, gāthan’ti.
‘Lord of gods, recite a verse!’
เอวํ วุตฺเต ภิกฺขเว สกฺโก เทวานมินฺโท
เวปจิตฺตึ อสุรินฺทํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ vutte, bhikkhave, sakko devānamindo vepacittiṁ asurindaṁ etadavoca:
When he said this, Sakka said to him,
ตุเมฺห เขฺวตฺถ เวปจิตฺติ ปุพฺพเทวา✎ ร่าง
‘tumhe khvettha, vepacitti, pubbadevā.
‘Vepacitti, you are the elder gods here.
ภณ เวปจิตฺติ คาถนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Bhaṇa, vepacitti, gāthan’ti.
Recite a verse.’
