[๑๓๒] ภิกษุรูปหนึ่งทูลถามว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ สังขารเป็นไฉน
และสังขารนี้เป็นของใคร พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสตอบว่า ตั้งปัญหายังไม่ถูก
ดูกรภิกษุ ผู้ใดพึงกล่าวว่า สังขารเป็นไฉน และสังขารนี้เป็นของใคร หรือพึง
กล่าวว่า สังขารเป็นอย่างอื่น และสังขารนี้เป็นของผู้อื่น คำทั้งสองของผู้นั้น มี
เนื้อความอย่างเดียวกัน ต่างกันแต่พยัญชนะเท่านั้น ดูกรภิกษุ เมื่อมีทิฐิว่า
ชีพก็อันนั้น สรีระก็อันนั้น ความอยู่ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์ย่อมไม่มี หรือเมื่อมี
ทิฐิว่า ชีพอย่างหนึ่ง สรีระอย่างหนึ่ง ความอยู่ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์ย่อมไม่มี
ดูกรภิกษุ ตถาคตย่อมแสดงธรรมโดยสายกลาง ไม่ข้องแวะส่วนสุดทั้งสองนั้น
ดังนี้ว่า เพราะอวิชชาเป็นปัจจัย จึงมีสังขาร ฯ
▴ ย่อ
กตเม นุ โข ภนฺเต สงฺขารา กสฺส จ ปนิเม
สงฺขาราติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Katame nu kho, bhante, saṅkhārā, kassa ca panime saṅkhārā”ti?
“What are choices, sir, and who do they belong to?”
โน กลฺโล ปโญฺหติ ภควา อโวจ กตเม สงฺขารา
กสฺส จ ปนิเม สงฺขาราติ อิติ วา ภิกฺขุ โย วเทยฺย อญฺเญ
สงฺขารา อญฺญสฺส จ ปนิเม สงฺขาราติ อิติ วา ภิกฺขุ โย
วเทยฺย อุภยเมตํ เอกตฺถํ พฺยญฺชนเมว นานํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“No kallo pañho”ti bhagavā avoca, “‘katame saṅkhārā kassa ca panime saṅkhārā’ti iti vā, bhikkhu, yo vadeyya, ‘aññe saṅkhārā aññassa ca panime saṅkhārā’ti iti vā, bhikkhu, yo vadeyya, ubhayametaṁ ekatthaṁ byañjanameva nānaṁ.
“That’s not a cogent question,” said the Buddha. “You might say, ‘What are choices, and who do they belong to?’ Or you might say, ‘Choices are one thing, who they belong to is another.’ But both of these mean the same thing, only the phrasing differs.
ตํ ชีวํ ตํ
สรีรนฺติ วา ภิกฺขุ ทิฏฺฐิยา สติ พฺรหฺมจริยวาโส น โหติ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ jīvaṁ taṁ sarīranti vā, bhikkhu, diṭṭhiyā sati brahmacariyavāso na hoti;
Mendicant, if you have the view that the soul and the body are one and the same, there is no living of the spiritual life.
อญฺญํ ชีวํ อญฺญํ สรีรนฺติ วา ภิกฺขุ ทิฏฺฐิยา สติ พฺรหฺมจริยวาโส
น โหติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
aññaṁ jīvaṁ aññaṁ sarīranti vā, bhikkhu, diṭṭhiyā sati brahmacariyavāso na hoti.
If you have the view that the soul is one thing, the body another, there is no living of the spiritual life.
เอเต เต ภิกฺขุ อุโภ อนฺเต อนุปคมฺม มชฺเฌน
ตถาคโต ธมฺมํ เทเสติ✎ ร่าง
Ete te, bhikkhu, ubho ante anupagamma majjhena tathāgato dhammaṁ deseti:
Avoiding these two extremes, the Realized One teaches by the middle way:
อวิชฺชาปจฺจยา สงฺขาราติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘avijjāpaccayā saṅkhārā’”ti.
‘Ignorance is a requirement for choices.’
