Pariññeyyasutta
Should Be Completely Understood
สาวตฺถี ฯ อถ โข✎ ร่าง
Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
อายสฺมา ราโธ เยน ภควา
เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ
นิสีทิ ฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนํ โข อายสฺมนฺตํ ราธํ ภควา เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Āyasmā rādho yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ rādhaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:
Then Venerable Rādha went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
ปริญฺเญยฺเย จ ราธ ธมฺเม เทเสสฺสามิ ปริญฺญญฺจ ๑- ปริญฺญาตาวิญฺจ
ปุคฺคลํ✎ ร่าง
“Pariññeyye ca, rādha, dhamme desessāmi pariññañca pariññātāviṁ puggalañca.
“Rādha, I will teach you the things that should be completely understood, complete understanding, and the individual who has completely understood.
ตํ สุณาหิ สาธุกํ มนสิกโรหิ ภาสิสฺสามีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti.
Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
เอวํ
ภนฺเตติ โข อายสฺมา ราโธ ภควโต ปจฺจสฺโสสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā rādho bhagavato paccassosi.
“Yes, sir,” Rādha replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca:
The Buddha said this:
กตเม จ ราธ ปริญฺเญยฺยา ธมฺมา ฯ✎ ร่าง
“katame ca, rādha, pariññeyyā dhammā?
“And what things should be completely understood?
รูปํ โข ราธ
ปริญฺเญยฺโย ธมฺโม เวทนา ปริญฺเญยฺโย ธมฺโม สญฺญา
ปริญฺเญยฺโย ธมฺโม สงฺขารา ปริญฺเญยฺโย ธมฺโม วิญฺญาณํ
ปริญฺเญยฺโย ธมฺโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
Rūpaṁ kho, rādha, pariññeyyo dhammo, vedanā pariññeyyo dhammo, saññā pariññeyyo dhammo, saṅkhārā pariññeyyo dhammo, viññāṇaṁ pariññeyyo dhammo.
Form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.
อิเม วุจฺจนฺติ ราธ ปริญฺเญยฺยา ธมฺมา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ime vuccanti, rādha, pariññeyyā dhammā.
These are called the things that should be completely understood.
กตมา จ ราธ ปริญฺญา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Katamā ca, rādha, pariññā?
And what is complete understanding?
โย โข ๒- ราคกฺขโย โทสกฺขโย โมหกฺขโย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yo kho, rādha, rāgakkhayo dosakkhayo mohakkhayo—
The ending of greed, hate, and delusion.
อยํ วุจฺจติ ราธ ปริญฺญา ฯ✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ vuccati, rādha, pariññā.
This is called complete understanding.
กตโม จ ราธ ปริญฺญาตาวี ปุคฺคโล ฯ✎ ร่าง
Katamo ca, rādha, pariññātāvī puggalo?
And what is the individual who has completely understood?
อรหาติสฺส วจนียํ ส✎ ร่าง
‘Arahā’tissa vacanīyaṁ.
It should be said: a perfected one,
ฺวายํ ๓- อายสฺมา เอวํนาโม เอวํโคตฺโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yvāyaṁ āyasmā evaṁnāmo evaṅgotto—
the venerable of such and such name and clan.
อยํ
วุจฺจติ ราธ ปริญฺญาตาวี ปุคฺคโลติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
ayaṁ vuccati, rādha, pariññātāvī puggalo”ti.
This is called the individual who has completely understood.”
