สมุทฺโท สมุทฺโทติ ภิกฺขเว อสฺสุตวา ปุถุชฺชโน ภาสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“‘Samuddo, samuddo’ti, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano bhāsati.
“Mendicants, an unlearned ordinary person speaks of the ocean.

Neso, bhikkhave, ariyassa vinaye samuddo.
But that’s not the ocean in the training of the Noble One.
มหา เอโส ภิกฺขเว
อุทกราสิ มหา อุทกณฺณโว ฯ✎ ร่าง
Mahā eso, bhikkhave, udakarāsi mahāudakaṇṇavo.
That’s just a large body of water, a large sea of water.
จกฺขุํ ภิกฺขเว ปุริสสฺส สมุทฺโท✎ ร่าง
Cakkhu, bhikkhave, purisassa samuddo;
For a person, the eye is an ocean,
ตสฺส รูปมโย เวโค✎ ร่าง
tassa rūpamayo vego.
and its currents are made of sights.
โย ตํ รูปมยํ เวคํ สหติ อยํ วุจฺจติ
ภิกฺขเว อตริ จกฺขุสมุทฺทํ สอุมฺมึ สาวฏฺฏํ สคาหํ สรกฺขสํ✎ ร่าง
Yo taṁ rūpamayaṁ vegaṁ sahati, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, atari cakkhusamuddaṁ saūmiṁ sāvaṭṭaṁ sagāhaṁ sarakkhasaṁ;
Someone who can prevail over those currents is said to have crossed over the ocean of the eye, with its waves and whirlpools, its saltwater crocodiles and monsters.

mind is an ocean,
ตสฺส ธมฺมมโย เวโค✎ ร่าง
tassa dhammamayo vego.
and its currents are made of ideas.
โย ตํ ธมฺมมยํ ๑-
เวคํ สหติ อยํ วุจฺจติ ภิกฺขเว อตริ มโนสมุทฺทํ สอุมฺมึ สาวฏฺฏํ
สคาหํ สรกฺขสํ✎ ร่าง
Yo taṁ dhammamayaṁ vegaṁ sahati, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, atari manosamuddaṁ saūmiṁ sāvaṭṭaṁ sagāhaṁ sarakkhasaṁ;
Someone who can prevail over those currents is said to have crossed over the ocean of the mind, with its waves and whirlpools, its saltwater crocodiles and monsters.
