อลญฺหิ เต วจฺฉ กงฺขิตุํ อลํ วิจิกิจฺฉิตุํ กงฺขานิเย
จ ปน เต ฐาเน วิจิกิจฺฉา อุปฺปนฺนา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kaṅkhanīye ca pana te ṭhāne vicikicchā uppannā.
Doubt has come up in you about an uncertain matter.
สอุปาทานสฺส ขฺวาหํ
วจฺฉ อุปปตฺตึ ปญฺญเปมิ โน อนุปาทานสฺส ฯ✎ ร่าง
Saupādānassa khvāhaṁ, vaccha, upapattiṁ paññāpemi no anupādānassa.
I describe rebirth for someone who grasps fuel, not for someone who does not.
เสยฺยถาปิ วจฺฉ
อคฺคิ สอุปาทาโน ชลติ โน อนุปาทาโน✎ ร่าง
Seyyathāpi, vaccha, aggi saupādāno jalati, no anupādāno;
It’s like a fire which only burns with fuel, not without fuel.
เอวเมว ขฺวาหํ วจฺฉ
สอุปาทานสฺส อุปปตฺตึ ปญฺญเปมิ โน อนุปาทานสฺสาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
evameva khvāhaṁ, vaccha, saupādānassa upapattiṁ paññāpemi, no anupādānassā”ti.
In the same way I describe rebirth for someone who grasps fuel, not for someone who doesn’t grasp fuel.”
ยสฺมึ โภ โคตม สมเย อจฺจิ วาเตน ขิตฺตา ทูรํปิ คจฺฉติ อิมิสฺสา
ปน ภวํ โคตโม กึ อุปาทานสฺมึ ปญฺญเปตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Yasmiṁ, bho gotama, samaye acci vātena khittā dūrampi gacchati, imassa pana bhavaṁ gotamo kiṁ upādānasmiṁ paññāpetī”ti?
“But when a flame is blown away by the wind, what does the worthy Gotama say is its fuel then?”

“Yasmiṁ kho, vaccha, samaye acci vātena khittā dūrampi gacchati, tamahaṁ vātūpādānaṁ paññāpemi.
“At such a time, I say that it’s fueled by the wind.
วาโต หิสฺส วจฺฉ ตสฺมึ สมเย อุปาทานํ โหตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Vāto hissa, vaccha, tasmiṁ samaye upādānaṁ hotī”ti.
For the wind is its fuel then.”
ยสฺมึ ๔- โภ โคตม สมเย อิมญฺจ กายํ นิกฺขิปติ สตฺโต จ อญฺญตรํ
กายํ อนุปปนฺโน โหติ ฯ อิมสฺส ปน ภวํ โคตโม กึ อุปาทานสฺมึ
ปญฺญเปตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Yasmiñca pana, bho gotama, samaye imañca kāyaṁ nikkhipati, satto ca aññataraṁ kāyaṁ anupapanno hoti, imassa pana bhavaṁ gotamo kiṁ upādānasmiṁ paññāpetī”ti?
“But when someone who is attached has laid down this body and has not been reborn in one of the realms, what does the worthy Gotama say is their fuel then?”
ยสฺมึ โข วจฺฉ สมเย อิมญฺจ กายํ นิกฺขิปติ สตฺโต จ
อญฺญตรํ กายํ อนุปปนฺโน โหติ ตมหํ ตณฺหุปาทานํ วทามิ✎ ร่าง
“Yasmiṁ kho, vaccha, samaye imañca kāyaṁ nikkhipati, satto ca aññataraṁ kāyaṁ anupapanno hoti, tamahaṁ taṇhūpādānaṁ vadāmi.
“When someone who is attached has laid down this body, Vaccha, and has not been reborn in one of the realms, I say they’re fueled by craving.
ตณฺหา หิสฺส วจฺฉ ตสฺมึ สมเย อุปาทานํ โหตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Taṇhā hissa, vaccha, tasmiṁ samaye upādānaṁ hotī”ti.
For craving is their fuel then.”
