เอกํ สมยํ ภควา ราชคเห วิหรติ เวฬุวเน

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.

ตตฺร โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ✎ ร่าง
Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:
There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:
ภูตปุพฺพํ ภิกฺขเว
อญฺญตโร ปุริโส ราชคหา นิกฺขมิตฺวา โลกจินฺตํ จินฺเตสฺสามีติ
เยน สุมาคธา ๑- โปกฺขรณี เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา สุมาคธาย
โปกฺขรณิยา ตีเร นิสีทิ โลกจินฺตํ จินฺเตนฺโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
“bhūtapubbaṁ, bhikkhave, aññataro puriso rājagahā nikkhamitvā ‘lokacintaṁ cintessāmī’ti yena sumāgadhā pokkharaṇī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā sumāgadhāya pokkharaṇiyā tīre nisīdi lokacintaṁ cintento.
“Once upon a time, mendicants, a certain person left Rājagaha, thinking ‘I’ll speculate about the world.’ They went to the Sumāgadhā lotus pond and sat down on the bank speculating about the world.
อทฺทสา โข
ภิกฺขเว โส ปุริโส สุมาคธาย โปกฺขรณิยา ตีเร จตุรงฺคินึ เสนํ
ภิสมุฬาลํ ปวิสนฺตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Addasā kho, bhikkhave, so puriso sumāgadhāya pokkharaṇiyā tīre caturaṅginiṁ senaṁ bhisamuḷālaṁ pavisantaṁ.
Then that person saw an army of four divisions enter a lotus stalk.
ทิสฺวานสฺส เอตทโหสิ✎ ร่าง
Disvānassa etadahosi:
When he saw this he thought,
อุมฺมตฺโตสฺมิ นามาหํ
วิเจโตสฺมิ นามาหํ✎ ร่าง
‘ummattosmi nāmāhaṁ, vicetosmi nāmāhaṁ.
‘I’ve gone mad, really, I’ve lost my mind!
ยํ โลเก นตฺถิ ตํ มยา ทิฏฺฐนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ loke natthi taṁ mayā diṭṭhan’ti.
I’m seeing things that don’t exist in the world.’
อถ โข โส ภิกฺขเว ปุริโส นครํ ปวิสิตฺวา มหาชนกายสฺส
อาโรเจสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho so, bhikkhave, puriso nagaraṁ pavisitvā mahājanakāyassa ārocesi:
Then that person entered the city and informed a large crowd,

อุมฺมตฺโตสฺมิ นามาหํ ภนฺเต วิเจโตสฺมิ นามาหํ ภนฺเต✎ ร่าง
‘ummattosmi nāmāhaṁ, bhante, vicetosmi nāmāhaṁ, bhante.
‘I’ve gone mad, really, I’ve lost my mind!

โลเก นตฺถิ ตํ มยา ทิฏฺฐนฺติ ฯ ยถา✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ loke natthi taṁ mayā diṭṭhan’ti.
I’m seeing things that don’t exist in the world.’
กถํ ปน ตฺวํ อมฺโภ ปุริส อุมฺมตฺโต
กถํ วิเจโต✎ ร่าง
‘Kathaṁ pana tvaṁ, ambho purisa, ummatto kathaṁ viceto?
‘But how is it that you’re mad? How have you lost your mind?
กิญฺจ โลเก นตฺถิ ยนฺตยา ทิฏฺฐนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kiñca loke natthi yaṁ tayā diṭṭhan’ti?
And what have you seen that doesn’t exist in the world?’
อิธาหํ ภนฺเต
ราชคหา นิกฺขมิตฺวา โลกจินฺตํ จินฺเตสฺสามีติ เยน สุมาคธา
โปกฺขรณี เตนุปสงฺกมึ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา สุมาคธาย โปกฺขรณิยา
ตีเร นิสีทึ โลกจินฺตํ จินฺเตนฺโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Idhāhaṁ, bhante, rājagahā nikkhamitvā “lokacintaṁ cintessāmī”ti yena sumāgadhā pokkharaṇī tenupasaṅkamiṁ; upasaṅkamitvā sumāgadhāya pokkharaṇiyā tīre nisīdiṁ lokacintaṁ cintento.
‘Sirs, I left Rājagaha, thinking “I’ll speculate about the world.” I went to the Sumāgadhā lotus pond and sat down on the bank speculating about the world.
อทฺทสํ ขฺวาหํ ภนฺเต สุมาคธาย

Then I saw an army of four divisions enter a lotus stalk.
เอวํ
ขฺวาหํ ภนฺเต อุมฺมตฺโต เอวํ วิเจโต✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ khvāhaṁ, bhante, ummatto evaṁ viceto.
That’s why I’m mad, that’s why I’ve lost my mind.
อิทญฺจ โลเก นตฺถิ ยํ

And that’s what I’ve seen that doesn’t exist in the world.’
ตคฺฆ ตฺวํ อมฺโภ ปุริส อุมฺมตฺโต ตคฺฆ วิเจโต✎ ร่าง
‘Taggha tvaṁ, ambho purisa, ummatto taggha viceto.
‘Well, my man, you’re definitely mad, you’ve definitely lost your mind.
อิทญฺจ โลเก นตฺถิ ยํ ตยา ทิฏฺฐนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Idañca loke natthi yaṁ tayā diṭṭhan’ti.
And you’re seeing things that don’t exist in the world.’
ตํ โข ปน ภิกฺขเว โส
ปุริโส ภูตํเยว อทฺทส โน อภูตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ kho pana, bhikkhave, so puriso bhūtaṁyeva addasa, no abhūtaṁ.
But what that person saw was in fact real, not unreal.
