[๒๕] สาวัตถีนิทาน. ครั้งนั้นแล ภิกษุมากรูปเข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายบังคมพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้ว นั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วนหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้ว ได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ขอประทานพระวโรกาส พวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชก ถามพวกข้าพระองค์ อย่างนี้ว่า ดูกรผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย พวกท่านอยู่ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์ในพระสมณโคดมเพื่อประโยชน์ อะไร? พวกข้าพระองค์ถูกถามอย่างนี้แล้ว จึงพยากรณ์แก่พวกอัญญเดียรถีย์ปริพาชกเหล่านั้น อย่างนี้ว่า ดูกรผู้มีอายุทั้งหลาย พวกเราอยู่ประพฤติพรหมจรรย์ในพระผู้มีพระภาค เพื่อกำหนด รู้ทุกข์ พวกข้าพระองค์ถูกถามอย่างนี้แล้ว พยากรณ์อย่างนี้ ชื่อว่ากล่าวตามพระดำรัสที่พระผู้มี พระภาคตรัสไว้แล้ว ไม่กล่าวตู่พระผู้มีพระภาคด้วยคำไม่จริง พยากรณ์ธรรมสมควรแก่ธรรม ทั้ง การคล้อยตามวาทะที่ถูกไรๆ จะไม่พึงถึงฐานะอันวิญญูชนพึงติเตียนได้ละหรือ.

อถ โข สมฺพหุลา ภิกฺขู เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมึสุ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทึสุ ฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนา โข เต ภิกฺขู ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจุํ✎ ร่าง

Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu …pe… ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ:

Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha … and said to him:

อิธ โน ภนฺเต อญฺญติตฺถิยา ปริพฺพาชกา อเมฺห เอวํ ปุจฺฉนฺติ✎ ร่าง

“Idha no, bhante, aññatitthiyā paribbājakā amhe evaṁ pucchanti:

“Sir, sometimes wanderers of other religions ask us:

กิมตฺถิยํ อาวุโส สมเณ โคตเม พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง

‘kimatthiyaṁ, āvuso, samaṇe gotame brahmacariyaṁ vussatī’ti?

‘Reverends, what’s the goal of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?’

sn45.5:2.3 #

เอวํ ปุฏฺฐา มยํ ภนฺเต เตสํ อญฺญติตฺถิยานํ ปริพฺพาชกานํ เอวํ พฺยากโรม✎ ร่าง

Evaṁ puṭṭhā mayaṁ, bhante, tesaṁ aññatitthiyānaṁ paribbājakānaṁ evaṁ byākaroma:

We answer them like this:

ทุกฺขสฺส โข อาวุโส ปริญฺญตฺถํ ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง

‘dukkhassa kho, āvuso, pariññatthaṁ bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ vussatī’ti.

‘The goal of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is to completely understand suffering.’

sn45.5:2.5 #

กจฺจิ มยํ ภนฺเต เอวํ ปุฏฺฐา เอวํ พฺยากรมานา วุตฺตวาทิโน เจว ภควโต โหม น จ ภควนฺตํ อภูเตน อพฺภาจิกฺขาม ธมฺมสฺส จานุธมฺมํ พฺยากโรม น จ โกจิ สหธมฺมิโก วาทานุวาโท คารยฺหํ ฐานํ อาคจฺฉตีติ✎ ร่าง

Kacci mayaṁ, bhante, evaṁ puṭṭhā evaṁ byākaramānā vuttavādino ceva bhagavato homa, na ca bhagavantaṁ abhūtena abbhācikkhāma, dhammassa cānudhammaṁ byākaroma, na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānuvādo gārayhaṁ ṭhānaṁ āgacchatī”ti?

Answering this way, we trust that we repeat what the Buddha has said, and don’t misrepresent him with an untruth. We trust our explanation is in line with the teaching, and that there are no legitimate grounds for rebuttal or criticism.”

“Taggha tumhe, bhikkhave, evaṁ puṭṭhā evaṁ byākaramānā vuttavādino ceva me hotha, na ca maṁ abhūtena abbhācikkhatha, dhammassa cānudhammaṁ byākarotha, na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānuvādo gārayhaṁ ṭhānaṁ āgacchati.

“Indeed, in answering this way you repeat what I’ve said, and don’t misrepresent me with an untruth. Your explanation is in line with the teaching, and there are no legitimate grounds for rebuttal or criticism.
