Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.
อถโข ภควา ปุพฺพณฺหสมยํ นิวาเสตฺวา ปตฺตจีวรมาทาย เยน อุคฺคสฺส
คหปติโน เวสาลิกสฺส นิเวสนํ เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ปญฺญตฺเต
อาสเน นิสีทิ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena uggassa gahapatino vesālikassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.
Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the householder Ugga of Vesālī, where he sat on the seat spread out.
อถโข อุคฺโค คหปติ เวสาลิโก เยน ภควา
เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา
เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อุคฺโค คหปติ
เวสาลิโก ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha kho uggo gahapati vesāliko yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho uggo gahapati vesāliko bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Ugga went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,
สมฺมุขา เมตํ ภนฺเต ภควโต สุตํ สมฺมุขา ปฏิคฺคหิตํ🤖 AI จับคู่
“Sammukhā metaṁ, bhante, bhagavato sutaṁ sammukhā paṭiggahitaṁ:
“Sir, I have heard and learned this in the presence of the Buddha:
มนาปทายี ลภเต มนาปนฺติ🤖 AI จับคู่
‘manāpadāyī labhate manāpan’ti.
‘The giver of the agreeable gets the agreeable.’
มนาปํ เม ภนฺเต สาลปุปฺผกํ ขาทนียํ🤖 AI จับคู่
Manāpaṁ me, bhante, sālapupphakaṁ khādanīyaṁ;
My sal flower porridge is agreeable:
ตํ เม ภควา ปฏิคฺคณฺหาตุ อนุกมฺปํ อุปาทายาติ🤖 AI จับคู่
taṁ me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti.
may the Buddha please accept it from me out of sympathy.”
ปฏิคฺคเหสิ ภควา
อนุกมฺปํ อุปาทาย🤖 AI จับคู่
Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
So the Buddha accepted it out of sympathy.
สมฺมุขา เมตํ ภนฺเต ภควโต สุตํ สมฺมุขา ปฏิคฺคหิตํ🤖 AI จับคู่
“Sammukhā metaṁ, bhante, bhagavato sutaṁ sammukhā paṭiggahitaṁ:
“Sir, I have heard and learned this in the presence of the Buddha:
มนาปทายี ลภเต มนาปนฺติ🤖 AI จับคู่
‘manāpadāyī labhate manāpan’ti.
‘The giver of the agreeable gets the agreeable.’
มนาปํ เม ภนฺเต สมฺปนฺนวรสูกรมํสํ🤖 AI จับคู่
Manāpaṁ me, bhante, sampannakolakaṁ sūkaramaṁsaṁ;
My pork with jujube is agreeable:
ตํ เม ภควา ปฏิคฺคณฺหาตุ อนุกมฺปํ อุปาทายาติ🤖 AI จับคู่
taṁ me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti.
may the Buddha please accept it from me out of sympathy.”
ปฏิคฺคเหสิ ภควา
อนุกมฺปํ อุปาทาย🤖 AI จับคู่
Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
So the Buddha accepted it out of sympathy.

“… My fried vegetable stalks are agreeable:
ตํ เม ภควา ปฏิคฺคณฺหาตุ อนุกมฺปํ อุปาทายาติ🤖 AI จับคู่
taṁ me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti.
may the Buddha please accept them from me out of sympathy.”
ปฏิคฺคเหสิ ภควา อนุกมฺปํ อุปาทาย🤖 AI จับคู่
Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
So the Buddha accepted them out of sympathy.

มนาโป เม ภนฺเต สาลีนํ โอทโน
วิคตกาฬโก ๓- อเนกสูโป อเนกพฺยญฺชโน🤖 AI จับคู่
Manāpo me, bhante, sālīnaṁ odano vicitakāḷako anekasūpo anekabyañjano;
“… My boiled fine rice with the dark grains picked out, served with many soups and sauces is agreeable:
ตํ เม ภควา
ปฏิคฺคณฺหาตุ อนุกมฺปํ อุปาทายาติ🤖 AI จับคู่
taṁ me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti.
may the Buddha please accept it from me out of sympathy.”
ปฏิคฺคเหสิ ภควา อนุกมฺปํ
อุปาทาย🤖 AI จับคู่
Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
So the Buddha accepted it out of sympathy.

tāni me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti.
may the Buddha please accept them from me out of sympathy.”

Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
So the Buddha accepted them out of sympathy.

Manāpo me, bhante, pallaṅko gonakatthato paṭalikatthato kadalimigapavarapaccattharaṇo sauttaracchado ubhatolohitakūpadhāno.
“… My couch spread with woolen covers—shag-piled or embroidered with flowers—and spread with a fine deer hide, with a canopy above and red pillows at both ends is agreeable.
อปิจ ภนฺเต มยเมตํ ๓- ชานาม🤖 AI จับคู่
Api ca, bhante, mayampetaṁ jānāma:
But, sir, I know that
เนตํ ภควโต กปฺปตีติ🤖 AI จับคู่
‘netaṁ bhagavato kappatī’ti.
this is not proper for the Buddha.
อิทํ เม ภนฺเต จนฺทนผลกํ อคฺฆติ อธิกสตสหสฺสํ🤖 AI จับคู่
Idaṁ me, bhante, candanaphalakaṁ agghati adhikasatasahassaṁ;
However, this plank of sandalwood is worth over a thousand dollars.
ตํ เม ภควา
ปฏิคฺคณฺหาตุ อนุกมฺปํ อุปาทายาติ🤖 AI จับคู่
taṁ me bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti.
May the Buddha please accept it from me out of sympathy.”
ปฏิคฺคเหสิ ภควา อนุกมฺปํ
อุปาทาย🤖 AI จับคู่
Paṭiggahesi bhagavā anukampaṁ upādāya.
So the Buddha accepted it out of sympathy.
อถโข ภควา อุคฺคํ คหปตึ เวสาลิกํ อิมินา
อนุโมทนีเยน อนุโมทิ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha kho bhagavā uggaṁ gahapatiṁ vesālikaṁ iminā anumodanīyena anumodi:
And then the Buddha rejoiced with Ugga with these verses of appreciation:
มนาปทายี ลภเต มนาปํ🤖 AI จับคู่
“Manāpadāyī labhate manāpaṁ,
“The giver of the agreeable gets the agreeable,
โย อุชุภูเตสุ ททาติ ฉนฺทสา🤖 AI จับคู่
Yo ujjubhūtesu dadāti chandasā;
enthusiastically giving clothing, bedding,
อจฺฉาทนํ สยนมถนฺนปานํ🤖 AI จับคู่
Acchādanaṁ sayanamannapānaṁ,
food and drink, and various requisites
นานปฺปการานิ จ ปจฺจยานิ🤖 AI จับคู่
Nānāppakārāni ca paccayāni.
to those of sincere conduct.
จตฺตญฺจ มุตฺตญฺจ อนุคฺคหีตํ🤖 AI จับคู่
Cattañca muttañca anuggahītaṁ,
Knowing the perfected ones to be like a field

เขตฺตูปเม อรหนฺเต วิทิตฺวา🤖 AI จับคู่
Khettūpame arahante viditvā;
for what’s given, offered and not held back,
โส ทุจฺจชํ สปฺปุริโส จชิตฺวา🤖 AI จับคู่
So duccajaṁ sappuriso cajitvā,
a true person gives what’s hard to give:
มนาปทายี ลภเต มนาปนฺติ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Manāpadāyī labhate manāpan”ti.
the giver of the agreeable gets the agreeable.”
อถโข ภควา อุคฺคํ คหปตึ เวสาลิกํ อิมินา อนุโมทนีเยน
อนุโมทิตฺวา อุฏฺฐายาสนา ปกฺกามิ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha kho bhagavā uggaṁ gahapatiṁ vesālikaṁ iminā anumodanīyena anumoditvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi.
And then the Buddha, having rejoiced with Ugga with these verses of appreciation, rose from his seat and left.
อถโข อุคฺโค คหปติ เวสาลิโก
อปเรน สมเยน กาลมกาสิ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha kho uggo gahapati vesāliko aparena samayena kālamakāsi.
Then after some time Ugga passed away,

Kālaṅkato ca uggo gahapati vesāliko aññataraṁ manomayaṁ kāyaṁ upapajji.
and was reborn in a host of mind-made gods.
เตน โข ปน สมเยน ภควา
สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเม🤖 AI จับคู่
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At that time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

Atha kho uggo devaputto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitaṁ kho uggaṁ devaputtaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:
Then, late at night, the glorious godling Ugga, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. The Buddha said to him,
กจฺจิ เต อุคฺค ยถาธิปฺปาโยติ🤖 AI จับคู่
“kacci te, ugga, yathādhippāyo”ti?
“Ugga, I trust it is all you wished?”
ตคฺฆ เม
ภควา ยถาธิปฺปาโยติ🤖 AI จับคู่
“Taggha me, bhagavā, yathādhippāyo”ti.
“Sir, it is indeed just as I wished.”
อถโข ภควา อุคฺคํ เทวปุตฺตํ คาถาหิ
อชฺฌภาสิ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha kho bhagavā uggaṁ devaputtaṁ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:
Then the Buddha addressed Ugga in verse:
มนาปทายี ลภเต มนาปํ🤖 AI จับคู่
“Manāpadāyī labhate manāpaṁ,
“The giver of the agreeable gets the agreeable,
อคฺคสฺส ทาตา ลภเต ปุนคฺคํ🤖 AI จับคู่
Aggassa dātā labhate punaggaṁ;
the giver of the foremost gets the foremost,
วรสฺส ทาตา วรลาภี จ โหติ🤖 AI จับคู่
Varassa dātā varalābhi hoti,
the giver of the excellent gets the excellent,
เสฏฺฐนฺทโท เสฏฺฐมุเปติ ฐานํ🤖 AI จับคู่
Seṭṭhaṁ dado seṭṭhamupeti ṭhānaṁ.
the giver of the best gets the best.
อคฺคทายี วรทายี🤖 AI จับคู่
Yo aggadāyī varadāyī,
A person who gives the foremost,
เสฏฺฐทายี จ โย นโร🤖 AI จับคู่
seṭṭhadāyī ca yo naro;
the excellent, the best:
ทีฆายุ ยสวา โหติ🤖 AI จับคู่
Dīghāyu yasavā hoti,
they’re long-lived and famous
ยตฺถ ยตฺถูปปชฺชตีติ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
yattha yatthūpapajjatī”ti.
wherever they’re reborn.”
