Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.

เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ
ปุพฺพาราเม มิคารมาตุ ปาสาเท ฯ✎ ร่าง
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in the stilt longhouse of Migāra’s mother in the Eastern Monastery.
เตน โข ปน สมเยน ภควา
ตทหุโปสเถ ภิกฺขุสงฺฆปริวุโต นิสินฺโน โหติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā tadahuposathe bhikkhusaṅghaparivuto nisinno hoti.
Now, at that time it was the sabbath, and the Buddha was sitting surrounded by the Saṅgha of monks.
อถ โข อายสฺมา
อานนฺโท อภิกฺกนฺตาย รตฺติยา นิกฺขนฺเต ๓- ปฐเม ยาเม อุฏฺฐายาสนา
เอกํสํ จีวรํ ๔- กตฺวา เยน ภควา เตนญฺชลิมฺปณาเมตฺวา
ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmā ānando abhikkantāya rattiyā, nikkhante paṭhame yāme, uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
And then, as the night was getting late, in the first watch of the night, Venerable Ānanda rose from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his cupped palms toward the Buddha and said,
อภิกฺกนฺตา ภนฺเต รตฺติ นิกฺขนฺโต
ปฐโม ยาโม จิรนิสินฺโน ภิกฺขุสงฺโฆ✎ ร่าง
“abhikkantā, bhante, ratti; nikkhanto paṭhamo yāmo; ciranisinno bhikkhusaṅgho;
“Sir, the night is getting late. It is the first watch of the night, and the Saṅgha of monks has been sitting long.
อุทฺทิสตุ ภนฺเต ภควา
ภิกฺขูนํ ปาติโมกฺขนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
uddisatu, bhante, bhagavā bhikkhūnaṁ pātimokkhan”ti.
Please, sir, may the Buddha recite the monastic code to the monks.”
เอวํ วุตฺเต ภควา ตุณฺหี อโหสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā tuṇhī ahosi.
But when he said this, the Buddha kept silent.
ทุติยมฺปิ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท อภิกฺกนฺตาย รตฺติยา
นิกฺขนฺเต มชฺฌิเม ยาเม อุฏฺฐายาสนา เอกํสํ จีวรํ กตฺวา เยน ภควา
เตนญฺชลิมฺปณาเมตฺวา ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Dutiyampi kho āyasmā ānando abhikkantāya rattiyā, nikkhante majjhime yāme, uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
For a second time, as the night was getting late, in the middle watch of the night, Ānanda rose from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his cupped palms toward the Buddha and said,

uddisatu, bhante, bhagavā bhikkhūnaṁ pātimokkhan”ti.
Please, sir, may the Buddha recite the monastic code to the monks.”
ทุติยมฺปิ โข ภควา ตุณฺหี
อโหสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Dutiyampi kho bhagavā tuṇhī ahosi.
But for a second time the Buddha kept silent.

For a third time, as the night was getting late, in the last watch of the night, as dawn stirred, bringing joy to the night, Ānanda rose from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his cupped palms toward the Buddha and said,

อปริสุทฺธา
อานนฺท ปริสาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Aparisuddhā, ānanda, parisā”ti.
“Ānanda, the assembly is not pure.”
อถ โข อายสฺมโต มหาโมคฺคลฺลานสฺส
เอตทโหสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa etadahosi:
Then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna thought,

กนฺนุ โข ภควา ปุคฺคลํ สนฺธาย เอวมาห✎ ร่าง
“kaṁ nu kho bhagavā puggalaṁ sandhāya evamāha:
“Who is the Buddha talking about?”
อปริสุทฺธา
อานนฺท ปริสาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘aparisuddhā, ānanda, parisā’”ti?
อถ โข อายสฺมา มหาโมคฺคลฺลาโน สพฺพาวนฺตํ
ภิกฺขุสงฺฆํ เจตสา เจโต ปริจฺจ มนสากาสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno sabbāvantaṁ bhikkhusaṅghaṁ cetasā ceto paricca manasākāsi.
Then he focused on encompassing the minds of everyone in the Saṅgha.
อทฺทสา โข อายสฺมา
มหาโมคฺคลฺลาโน ตํ ปุคฺคลํ ทุสฺสีลํ ปาปธมฺมํ อสุจิสงฺกสฺสรสมาจารํ
ปฏิจฺฉนฺนกมฺมนฺตํ อสฺสมณํ สมณปฏิญฺญํ อพฺรหฺมจารึ
พฺรหฺมจาริปฏิญฺญํ อนฺโตปูตึ อวสฺสุตํ กสมฺพุกชาตํ มชฺเฌ
ภิกฺขุสงฺฆสฺส นิสินฺนํ✎ ร่าง
Addasā kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno taṁ puggalaṁ dussīlaṁ pāpadhammaṁ asuciṁ saṅkassarasamācāraṁ paṭicchannakammantaṁ assamaṇaṁ samaṇapaṭiññaṁ abrahmacāriṁ brahmacāripaṭiññaṁ antopūtiṁ avassutaṁ kasambujātaṁ majjhe bhikkhusaṅghassa nisinnaṁ.
He saw that unethical individual, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitioner—though claiming to be one—rotten inside, festering, and depraved, sitting in the middle of the Saṅgha.
ทิสฺวาน อุฏฺฐายาสนา เยน โส ปุคฺคโล
เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ตํ ปุคฺคลํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Disvāna uṭṭhāyāsanā yena so puggalo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ puggalaṁ etadavoca:
When he saw him he rose from his seat, went up to him and said,
อุฏฺเฐหาวุโส
ทิฏฺโฐสิ ภควตา✎ ร่าง
“uṭṭhehi, āvuso, diṭṭhosi bhagavatā;
“Get up, reverend. The Buddha has seen you.
นตฺถิ เต ภิกฺขูหิ สทฺธึ สํวาโสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
natthi te bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ saṁvāso”ti.
You can’t live in communion with the monks.”
อถ ๓- โข
โส ปุคฺคโล ตุณฺหี อโหสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ vutte, so puggalo tuṇhī ahosi.
But when he said this, that individual kept silent.
ทุติยมฺปิ โข โส อายสฺมา มหาโมคฺคลฺลาโน ตํ
ปุคฺคลํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Dutiyampi kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno taṁ puggalaṁ etadavoca:
For a second time and a third time,

อุฏฺเฐหาวุโส ทิฏฺโฐสิ ภควตา✎ ร่าง
“uṭṭhehi, āvuso, diṭṭhosi bhagavatā;
he asked that monk to leave.
นตฺถิ เต ภิกฺขูหิ สทฺธึ
สํวาโสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
natthi te bhikkhūhi saddhiṁ saṁvāso”ti.
ทุติยมฺปิ โข โส ปุคฺคโล ตุณฺหี อโหสิ ฯ ตติยมฺปิ โข
อายสฺมา มหาโมคฺคลฺลาโน ตํ ปุคฺคลํ เอตทโวจ อุฏฺเฐหาวุโส

นิกฺขาเมตฺวา สุจิฆฏิกํ ทตฺวา เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา
ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno taṁ puggalaṁ bāhāyaṁ gahetvā bahidvārakoṭṭhakā nikkhāmetvā sūcighaṭikaṁ datvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna took that individual by the arm, ejected him out the gate, and bolted the door. Then he went up to the Buddha, and said to him,
นิกฺขามิโต ภนฺเต โส ปุคฺคโล มยา✎ ร่าง
“nikkhāmito, bhante, so puggalo mayā.
“I have ejected that individual.
ปริสุทฺธา
ปริสา✎ ร่าง
Parisuddhā parisā.
The assembly is pure.
อุทฺทิสตุ ภนฺเต ภควา ภิกฺขูนํ ปาติโมกฺขนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Uddisatu, bhante, bhagavā bhikkhūnaṁ pātimokkhan”ti.
Please, sir, may the Buddha recite the monastic code to the monks.”
อจฺฉริยํ
โมคฺคลฺลาน อพฺภูตํ โมคฺคลฺลาน✎ ร่าง
“Acchariyaṁ, moggallāna, abbhutaṁ, moggallāna.
“It’s incredible, Moggallāna, it’s amazing,
ยาว พาหาคหณาปิ นาเมโส
โมฆปุริโส อาคมิสฺสตีติ ๑- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yāva bāhāgahaṇāpi nāma so moghapuriso āgamessatī”ti.
how that futile man waited to be taken by the arm!”
อถโข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:
Then the Buddha said to the monks,

นทานาหํ ภิกฺขเว อิโต ปรํ อุโปสถํ กริสฺสามิ ปาติโมกฺขํ

“na dānāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ito paraṁ uposathaṁ karissāmi, pātimokkhaṁ uddisissāmi.
“From this day forth, monks, I will not perform the sabbath or recite the monastic code.
ตุเมฺห ๒- เยว ภิกฺขเว ๓- อิโต ปรํ อุโปสถํ กเรยฺยาถ
ปาติโมกฺขํ อุทฺทิเสยฺยาถ✎ ร่าง
Tumheva dāni, bhikkhave, ito paraṁ uposathaṁ kareyyātha, pātimokkhaṁ uddiseyyātha.
Now you should perform the sabbath and recite the monastic code.
อฏฺฐานเมตํ ภิกฺขเว อนวกาโส ยํ
ตถาคโต อปริสุทฺธาย ปริสาย อุโปสถํ กเรยฺย ปาติโมกฺขํ
อุทฺทิเสยฺยาถาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Aṭṭhānametaṁ, bhikkhave, anavakāso yaṁ tathāgato aparisuddhāya parisāya uposathaṁ kareyya, pātimokkhaṁ uddiseyya.
It’s impossible, monks, it can’t happen that a Realized One could recite the monastic code in an impure assembly.
