Misconceptions
วุตฺตํ เหตํ ภควา วุตฺตมรหตาติ เม สุตํ✎ ร่าง
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
ทฺวีหิ ภิกฺขเว
ทิฏฺฐิคเตหิ ปริยุฏฺฐิตา เทวมนุสฺสา โอลิยนฺติ เอเก อติธาวนฺติ เอเก
จกฺขุมนฺโต จ ปสฺสนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Dvīhi, bhikkhave, diṭṭhigatehi pariyuṭṭhitā devamanussā olīyanti eke, atidhāvanti eke; cakkhumanto ca passanti.
“Overcome by two misconceptions, mendicants, some gods and humans get stuck, some overreach, while those with vision see.
กถญฺจ ภิกฺขเว โอลิยนฺติ เอเก✎ ร่าง
Kathañca, bhikkhave, olīyanti eke?
And how do some get stuck?
ภวารามา ภิกฺขเว
เทวมนุสฺสา ภวรตา ภวสมฺมุทิตา เตสํ ภวนิโรธาย ธมฺเม เทสิยมาเน
จิตฺตํ น ปกฺขนฺทติ น สมฺปสีทติ น สนฺติฏฺฐติ นาธิมุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Bhavārāmā, bhikkhave, devamanussā bhavaratā bhavasammuditā tesaṁ bhavanirodhāya dhamme desiyamāne cittaṁ na pakkhandati na pasīdati na santiṭṭhati nādhimuccati.
Because of love, delight, and enjoyment of existence, when the Dhamma is being taught for the cessation of existence, the minds of some gods and humans do not leap forth, gain confidence, settle down, and become decided.
เอวํ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, olīyanti eke.
That is how some get stuck.

And how do some overreach?

Bhaveneva kho paneke aṭṭīyamānā harāyamānā jigucchamānā vibhavaṁ abhinandanti—
Some, becoming horrified, repelled, and disgusted with existence, delight in nonexistence:
—
yato kira, bho, ayaṁ attā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā ucchijjati vinassati na hoti paraṁ maraṇā;
‘When this self is annihilated and destroyed when the body breaks up, and doesn’t exist after death:
—
etaṁ santaṁ etaṁ paṇītaṁ etaṁ yāthāvanti.
that is peaceful, that is sublime, that is how it is.’

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, atidhāvanti eke.
That is how some overreach.

Kathañca, bhikkhave, cakkhumanto passanti?
And how do those with vision see?
—
Idha bhikkhu bhūtaṁ bhūtato passati;
It’s when a mendicant sees what has come to be as having come to be.
—
bhūtaṁ bhūtato disvā bhūtassa nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya paṭipanno hoti.
Seeing this, they are practicing for disillusionment, dispassion, and cessation regarding what has come to be.
—
Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, cakkhumanto passantī”ti.
That is how those with vision see.”
