“Parābhavantaṁ purisaṁ,
“We ask Gotama

mayaṁ pucchāma gotama;
about a man’s downfall.
ภควนฺตํ ปุฏฺฐุมาคมฺม✎ ร่าง
Bhavantaṁ puṭṭhumāgamma,
We have come to ask you, sir:
กึ ปราภวโต มุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kiṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.
what leads to downfall?”
สุวิชาโน ภวํ โหติ ท✎ ร่าง
“Suvijāno bhavaṁ hoti,
“It’s easy to understand success,
ุวิชาโน *- ปราภโว✎ ร่าง
suvijāno parābhavo;
understanding downfall is just as easy.
ธมฺมกาโม ภวํ โหติ✎ ร่าง
Dhammakāmo bhavaṁ hoti,
One who loves the teaching succeeds,
ธมฺมเทสฺสี ปราภโว✎ ร่าง
dhammadessī parābhavo”.
but a hater of the teaching meets their downfall.”
อิติ เหตํ วิชานาม✎ ร่าง
“Iti hetaṁ vijānāma,
“We understand what you’re saying,
ปฐโม โส ปราภโว ฯ✎ ร่าง
paṭhamo so parābhavo;
this is the first downfall.
ทุติยํ ภควา พฺรูหิ✎ ร่าง
Dutiyaṁ bhagavā brūhi,
Tell us the second, Blessed One:
กึ ปราภวโต มุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kiṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.

อสนฺตสฺส ปิยา โหนฺติ✎ ร่าง
“Asantassa piyā honti,
“The bad are dear to him,
สนฺเต น กุรุเต ปิยํ✎ ร่าง
sante na kurute piyaṁ;
he has no love for the good.
อสตํ ธมฺมํ โรเจติ✎ ร่าง
Asataṁ dhammaṁ roceti,
He believes the teaching of the bad;
ตํ ปราภวโต มุขํ✎ ร่าง
taṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.
and that leads to his downfall.”
อิติ เหตํ วิชานาม✎ ร่าง
“Iti hetaṁ vijānāma,
“We understand what you’re saying,
ทุติโย โส ปราภโว ฯ✎ ร่าง
dutiyo so parābhavo;
this is the second downfall.
ตติยํ ภควา พฺรูหิ✎ ร่าง
Tatiyaṁ bhagavā brūhi,
Tell us the third, Blessed One:
กึ ปราภวโต มุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kiṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.

นิทฺทาสีลี สภาสีลี✎ ร่าง
“Niddāsīlī sabhāsīlī,
“Fond of sleep, fond of company,

a man who does no work;
อลโส โกธปญฺญาโณ✎ ร่าง
Alaso kodhapaññāṇo,

kiṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.

โย มาตรํ วา ๑- ปิตรํ วา✎ ร่าง
“Yo mātaraṁ pitaraṁ vā,
“Though able, he does not look after

jiṇṇakaṁ gatayobbanaṁ;
his mother and father
ปหุสนฺโต น ภรติ✎ ร่าง
Pahu santo na bharati,
when elderly, past their prime,
ตํ ปราภวโต มุขํ✎ ร่าง
taṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.
and that leads to his downfall.”

“Iti hetaṁ vijānāma,
“We understand what you’re saying,
จตุตฺโถ โส ปราภโว ฯ✎ ร่าง
catuttho so parābhavo;
this is the fourth downfall.
ปญฺจมํ ภควา พฺรูหิ✎ ร่าง
Pañcamaṁ bhagavā brūhi,
Tell us the fifth, Blessed One:
กึ ปราภวโต มุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kiṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.

โย พฺราหฺมณํ วา ๒- สมณํ วา✎ ร่าง
“Yo brāhmaṇaṁ samaṇaṁ vā,
“He deceives with lies
อญฺญํ วาปิ วนิพฺพกํ✎ ร่าง
Aññaṁ vāpi vanibbakaṁ;
ascetics and brahmins
มุสาวาเทน วญฺเจติ✎ ร่าง
Musāvādena vañceti,
and other supplicants,
ตํ ปราภวโต มุขํ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.
and that leads to his downfall.”

ปหุตวิตฺโต ๓- ปุริโส✎ ร่าง
“Pahūtavitto puriso,
“A man with plenty of wealth,
สหิรญฺโญ สโภชโน✎ ร่าง
Sahirañño sabhojano;
including gold coin and food,
เอโก ภุญฺชติ สาทูนิ✎ ร่าง
Eko bhuñjati sādūni,
eats delicacies alone,
ตํ ปราภวโต มุขํ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.
and that leads to his downfall.”

“Iti hetaṁ vijānāma,
“We understand what you’re saying,
ฉฏฺฐโม โส ปราภโว ฯ✎ ร่าง
Chaṭṭhamo so parābhavo;
this is the sixth downfall.
สตฺตมํ ภควา พฺรูหิ✎ ร่าง
Sattamaṁ bhagavā brūhi,
Tell us the seventh, Blessed One:
กึ ปราภวโต มุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kiṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.

ชาติถทฺโธ ธนถทฺโธ✎ ร่าง
“Jātitthaddho dhanatthaddho,
“Vain of birth, wealth,
โคตฺตถทฺโธ จ โย นโร✎ ร่าง
Gottatthaddho ca yo naro;
and clan, a man
สญฺญาตึ อติมญฺเญติ✎ ร่าง
Saññātiṁ atimaññeti,
looks down on his own family,
ตํ ปราภวโต มุขํ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.
and that leads to his downfall.”

“We understand what you’re saying,
สตฺตโม โส ปราภโว ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sattamo so parābhavo;
this is the seventh downfall.
อฏฺฐมํ ภควา พฺรูหิ✎ ร่าง
Aṭṭhamaṁ bhagavā brūhi,
Tell us the eighth, Blessed One:
กึ ปราภวโต มุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kiṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.

อิตฺถีธุตฺโต สุราธุตฺโต✎ ร่าง
“Itthidhutto surādhutto,
“In womanizing, drinking,
อกฺขธุตฺโต จ โย นโร✎ ร่าง
Akkhadhutto ca yo naro;
and gambling, a man
ลทฺธํ ลทฺธํ วินาเสติ✎ ร่าง
Laddhaṁ laddhaṁ vināseti,
wastes all that he has earned,
ตํ ปราภวโต มุขํ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.
and that leads to his downfall.”

“Sehi dārehi asantuṭṭho,
“Not content with his own partners,

Vesiyāsu padussati;
he debauches himself with prostitutes,

ตํ ปราภวโต มุขํ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.
and that leads to his downfall.”

นวโม โส ปราภโว ฯ✎ ร่าง
Navamo so parābhavo;
this is the ninth downfall.
ทสมํ ภควา พฺรูหิ✎ ร่าง
Dasamaṁ bhagavā brūhi,
Tell us the tenth, Blessed One:
กึ ปราภวโต มุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kiṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.

อตีตโยพฺพโน โปโส✎ ร่าง
“Atītayobbano poso,
“A man well past his prime
อาเนติ ติมฺพรุตฺถนึ✎ ร่าง
Āneti timbarutthaniṁ;
marries a girl with budding breasts;
ตสฺสา อิสฺสา น สุปติ✎ ร่าง
Tassā issā na supati,
he cannot sleep for jealousy,
ตํ ปราภวโต มุขํ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.
and that leads to his downfall.”

“Iti hetaṁ vijānāma,
“We understand what you’re saying,
ทสโม โส ปราภโว ฯ✎ ร่าง
Dasamo so parābhavo;
this is the tenth downfall.
เอกาทสมํ ภควา พฺรูหิ✎ ร่าง
Ekādasamaṁ bhagavā brūhi,
Tell us the eleventh, Blessed One:
กึ ปราภวโต มุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kiṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.

อิตฺถึ ๓- โสณฺฑึ วิกิรณึ✎ ร่าง
“Itthiṁ soṇḍiṁ vikiraṇiṁ,
“He places in authority

a woman or a man

who’s a drunkard and a wastrel,
ตํ ปราภวโต มุขํ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.
and that leads to his downfall.”

Ekādasamo so parābhavo;

Dvādasamaṁ bhagavā brūhi,
Tell us the twelfth, Blessed One:
กึ ปราภวโต มุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kiṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ”.

อปฺปโภโค มหาตโณฺห✎ ร่าง
“Appabhogo mahātaṇho,
“A man of little wealth and strong craving,
ขตฺติเย ชายเต กุเล✎ ร่าง
Khattiye jāyate kule;
born into an aristocratic family,
โส ๕- จ รชฺชํ ปตฺถยติ✎ ร่าง
So ca rajjaṁ patthayati,
sets his sights on kingship,
ตํ ปราภวโต มุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ parābhavato mukhaṁ.
and that leads to his downfall.
เอเต ปราภเว โลเก✎ ร่าง
Ete parābhave loke,
Seeing these downfalls in the world,
ปณฺฑิโต สมเวกฺขิย✎ ร่าง
Paṇḍito samavekkhiya;
an astute and noble person,
อริยทสฺสนสมฺปนฺโน✎ ร่าง
Ariyo dassanasampanno,
accomplished in vision,
ส โลกํ ภชเต สิวนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sa lokaṁ bhajate sivan”ti.
will enjoy a world of grace.”
