เอวมฺเม สุตํ ฯ เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ
เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเม ฯ✎ ร่าง
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
อถ โข ภควา ปุพฺพณฺหสมยํ
นิวาเสตฺวา ปตฺตจีวรมาทาย สาวตฺถึ ปิณฺฑาย ปาวิสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi.
Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms.
เตน โข ปน สมเยน อคฺคิกภารทฺวาชสฺส พฺราหฺมณสฺส นิเวสเน
อคฺคิ ปชฺชลิโต โหติ อาหุตี ๑- ปคฺคหิตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tena kho pana samayena aggikabhāradvājassa brāhmaṇassa nivesane aggi pajjalito hoti āhuti paggahitā.
Now at that time in the brahmin Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper’s home the sacred flame had been kindled and the oblation prepared.
อถ โข ภควา
สาวตฺถิยํ สปทานํ ปิณฺฑาย จรมาโน เยน อคฺคิกภารทฺวาชสฺส
พฺราหฺมณสฺส นิเวสนํ เตนุปสงฺกมิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ sapadānaṁ piṇḍāya caramāno yena aggikabhāradvājassa brāhmaṇassa nivesanaṁ tenupasaṅkami.
Wandering indiscriminately for almsfood in Sāvatthī, the Buddha approached Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper’s house.
อทฺทสา โข อคฺคิกภารทฺวาโช
พฺราหฺมโณ ภควนฺตํ ทูรโต ว อาคจฺฉนฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Addasā kho aggikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ.
Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper saw the Buddha coming off in the distance
ทิสฺวาน ภควนฺตํ
เอตทโวจ อ✎ ร่าง
Disvāna bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
and said to him,
เตฺรว ๒- มุณฺฑก อ✎ ร่าง
“tatreva, muṇḍaka;
“Stop right there, shaveling!
เตฺรว ๒- สมณก อ✎ ร่าง
tatreva, samaṇaka;
Right there, fake ascetic!
เตฺรว ๒-
วสลก ติฏฺฐาหีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tatreva, vasalaka, tiṭṭhāhī”ti.
Right there, lowlife!”
เอวํ วุตฺเต ภควา อคฺคิกภารทฺวาชํ พฺราหฺมณํ
เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā aggikabhāradvājaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ etadavoca:
When he said this, the Buddha said to him,

ชานาสิ ปน ตฺวํ พฺราหฺมณ วสลํ วา วสลกรเณ วา
ธมฺเมติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“jānāsi pana tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, vasalaṁ vā vasalakaraṇe vā dhamme”ti?
“But brahmin, do you know what is a lowlife or what are the qualities that make you a lowlife?”
น ขฺวาหํ โภ โคตม ชานามิ วสลํ วา วสลกรเณ วา
ธมฺเม✎ ร่าง
“Na khvāhaṁ, bho gotama, jānāmi vasalaṁ vā vasalakaraṇe vā dhamme;
“No I do not, worthy Gotama.
สาธุ เม ภวํ โคตโม ตถา ธมฺมํ เทเสตุ ยถาหํ ชาเนยฺยํ
วสลํ วา วสลกรเณ วา ธมฺเมติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sādhu me bhavaṁ gotamo tathā dhammaṁ desetu, yathāhaṁ jāneyyaṁ vasalaṁ vā vasalakaraṇe vā dhamme”ti.
Please, worthy Gotama, teach me this matter so I can understand what is a lowlife or what are the qualities that make you a lowlife.”
เตน หิ พฺราหฺมณ สุณาหิ ๓-
สาธุกํ มนสิกโรหิ ภาสิสฺสามีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Tena hi, brāhmaṇa, suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti.
“Well then, brahmin, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
เอวํ โภติ โข อคฺคิกภารทฺวาโช
พฺราหฺมโณ ภควโต ปจฺจสฺโสสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Evaṁ, bho”ti kho aggikabhāradvājo brāhmaṇo bhagavato paccassosi.
“Yes, worthy sir,” Bhāradvāja the Fire-Worshiper replied.
