taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
เอกชํ วา ทฺวิชํ ๑- วาปิ✎ ร่าง
Ekajaṁ vā dvijaṁ vāpi,
He harms living creatures
โยธ ปาณํ วิหึสติ✎ ร่าง
yodha pāṇaṁ vihiṁsati;
born of womb or of egg,
ยสฺส ปาเณ ทยา นตฺถิ✎ ร่าง
Yassa pāṇe dayā natthi,
and has no kindness for creatures:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โย หนฺติ อุปรุนฺเธติ✎ ร่าง
Yo hanti parirundhati,
He destroys and devastates

Whether in village or wilderness,

yaṁ paresaṁ mamāyitaṁ;
he steals what belongs to others,
เถยฺยา อทินฺนํ อาเนติ✎ ร่าง
Theyyā adinnamādeti,
taking what has not been given:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โย หเว อิณมาทาย ภ✎ ร่าง
Yo have iṇamādāya,
Having fallen into debt,

when pressed to pay up he flees, saying

Yo ve kiñcikkhakamyatā,
Wanting some item or other,
ปนฺถสฺมึ วชตํ ชนํ✎ ร่าง
panthasmiṁ vajantaṁ janaṁ;
he attacks a person in the street
หนฺตา กิญฺจิกฺขมาเทติ✎ ร่าง
Hantvā kiñcikkhamādeti,
and takes it:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ ๖

อตฺตเหตุ ปรเหตุ✎ ร่าง
Attahetu parahetu,
For his own sake or the sake of another,
ธนเหตุ จ โย นโร✎ ร่าง
dhanahetu ca yo naro;
or for the sake of wealth, a man
สกฺขิปุฏฺโฐ มุสา พฺรูติ✎ ร่าง
Sakkhipuṭṭho musā brūti,
tells a lie when asked to bear witness:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โย ญาตีนํ สขีนํ วา✎ ร่าง
Yo ñātīnaṁ sakhīnaṁ vā,
He is spied among the partners
ทาเรสุ ปฏิทิสฺสติ✎ ร่าง
dāresu paṭidissati;
of relatives and friends,
สหสา ๔- สมฺปิเยน วา✎ ร่าง
Sāhasā sampiyena vā,
by force or seduction:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โย มาตรํ วา ปิตรํ วา✎ ร่าง
Yo mātaraṁ pitaraṁ vā,
Though able, he does not look after
ชิณฺณกํ คตโยพฺพนํ✎ ร่าง
jiṇṇakaṁ gatayobbanaṁ;
his mother and father
ปหุสนฺโต น ภรติ✎ ร่าง
Pahu santo na bharati,
when elderly, past their prime:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โย มาตรํ วา ปิตรํ วา✎ ร่าง
Yo mātaraṁ pitaraṁ vā,
He hits or verbally abuses

Yo atthaṁ pucchito santo,
When asked about the good,

he teaches what is bad,

Yo katvā pāpakaṁ kammaṁ,
Having done a bad deed, he wishes,
มา มํ ชญฺญาติ อิจฺฉติ✎ ร่าง
Mā maṁ jaññāti icchati;
‘May no-one find me out!’
โย ปฏิจฺฉนฺนกมฺมนฺโต✎ ร่าง
Yo paṭicchannakammanto,
His deeds are underhand:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โย เว ปรกุลํ คนฺตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Yo ve parakulaṁ gantvā,
When visiting another family
ภุตฺวา ๑- จ สุจิโภชนํ✎ ร่าง
Bhutvāna sucibhojanaṁ;
he eats their delicious food,
อาคตํ นปฺปฏิปูเชติ✎ ร่าง
Āgataṁ nappaṭipūjeti,
but does not return the honor:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โย พฺราหฺมณํ วา สมณํ วา✎ ร่าง
Yo brāhmaṇaṁ samaṇaṁ vā,
He deceives with lies
อญฺญํ วาปิ วนิพฺพกํ✎ ร่าง
Aññaṁ vāpi vanibbakaṁ;
ascetics and brahmins
มุสาวาเทน วญฺเจติ✎ ร่าง
Musāvādena vañceti,
and other supplicants:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โย พฺราหฺมณํ วา สมณํ วา✎ ร่าง
Yo brāhmaṇaṁ samaṇaṁ vā,
When time comes to offer a meal

He talks about what never happened,

Mohena paliguṇṭhito;
being wrapped up in delusion,
กิญฺจิกฺขํ นิชิคึสาโน✎ ร่าง
Kiñcikkhaṁ nijigīsāno,
chasing after some item or other:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โย จตฺตานํ สมุกฺกํเส✎ ร่าง
Yo cattānaṁ samukkaṁse,
He extols himself
ปเร ๒- จ อวชานติ✎ ร่าง
Pare ca mavajānāti;
and disparages others,
นิหีโน เสน มาเนน✎ ร่าง
Nihīno sena mānena,
brought down by his pride:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โรสโก กทริโย จ✎ ร่าง
Rosako kadariyo ca,
He’s a bully and a miser,
ปาปิจฺโฉ มจฺฉรี สโฐ✎ ร่าง
Pāpiccho maccharī saṭho;
of corrupt wishes, stingy, and devious,
อหิริโก อโนตฺตปฺปี✎ ร่าง
Ahiriko anottappī,
shameless, imprudent:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โย พุทฺธํ ปริภาสติ✎ ร่าง
Yo buddhaṁ paribhāsati,
He insults the Buddha
อถ วา ตสฺส สาวกํ✎ ร่าง
Atha vā tassa sāvakaṁ;
or his disciple,
ปริพฺพาชกํ ๓- คหฏฺฐํ วา✎ ร่าง
Paribbājaṁ gahaṭṭhaṁ vā,
whether lay or renunciate:
ตํ ชญฺญา วสโล อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Taṁ jaññā vasalo iti.
know him as a lowlife.
โย เว อนรหํ ๔- สนฺโต✎ ร่าง
Yo ve anarahaṁ santo,
He claims to be a perfected one,
อรหํ ปฏิชานติ✎ ร่าง
Arahaṁ paṭijānāti;
when he really is no such thing.
โจโร สพฺรหฺมเก โลเก✎ ร่าง
Coro sabrahmake loke,
In the world with its divinities,
เอโส ๖- โข วสลาธโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
Eso kho vasalādhamo;
that crook is truly the lowest lowlife.
เอเต โข วสลา วุตฺตา✎ ร่าง
Ete kho vasalā vuttā,
These who are called lowlifes
มยา เย เต ปกาสิตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Mayā yete pakāsitā.
I have explained to you.
น ชจฺจา วสโล โหติ✎ ร่าง
Na jaccā vasalo hoti,
You’re not a lowlife by birth,

Na jaccā hoti brāhmaṇo;
nor by birth are you a brahmin.

You’re a lowlife by your deeds,
กมฺมุนา โหติ พฺราหฺมโณ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kammunā hoti brāhmaṇo.
by deeds you’re a brahmin.
ตทมินาปิ ชานาถ✎ ร่าง
Tadamināpi jānātha,
And also you should know
ยถา เมทํ นิทสฺสนํ✎ ร่าง
Yathāmedaṁ nidassanaṁ;
according to this example.
จณฺฑาลปุตฺโต โสปาโก✎ ร่าง
Caṇḍālaputto sopāko,
A corpse-worker’s son of the dog-eating caste
มาตงฺโค อิติ วิสฺสุโต✎ ร่าง
Mātaṅgo iti vissuto.
became renowned as Mātaṅga.
โส ยสปฺปรมปฺปตฺโต✎ ร่าง
So yasaṁ paramaṁ patto,
Mātaṅga achieved the highest fame

เทวยานํ อภิรุยฺห✎ ร่าง
Devayānaṁ abhiruyha,
He ascended the stainless highway

Virajaṁ so mahāpathaṁ;

พฺรหฺมโลกูปโค อหุ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Brahmalokūpago ahu;
he was reborn in a realm of divinity.
น นํ ชาติ นิวาเรสิ✎ ร่าง
Na naṁ jāti nivāresi,
His birth did not prevent him
พฺรหฺมโลกูปปตฺติยา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Brahmalokūpapattiyā.
from rebirth in the realm of divinity.
อชฺฌายิกกุเล ๔- ชาตา✎ ร่าง
Ajjhāyakakule jātā,
Those born in a brahmin family
พฺราหฺมณา มนฺตพนฺธวา✎ ร่าง
Brāhmaṇā mantabandhavā;
who recite as kinsmen of the hymns,
เต จ ปาเปสุ กมฺเมสุ✎ ร่าง
Te ca pāpesu kammesu,
are often discovered
อภิณฺหมุปทิสฺสเร✎ ร่าง
Abhiṇhamupadissare.
in the midst of wicked deeds.
ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม คารยฺหา✎ ร่าง
Diṭṭheva dhamme gārayhā,
Blameworthy in this very life,
สมฺปราเย จ ทุคฺคติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Samparāye ca duggati;
and in the next, a bad destination.
น เน ชาติ นิวาเรติ✎ ร่าง
Na ne jāti nivāreti,
Their birth does not prevent them
ทุคฺคจฺจา ๕- ครหาย วา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Duggatyā garahāya vā.
from blame or bad destiny.
น ชจฺจา วสโล โหติ✎ ร่าง
Na jaccā vasalo hoti,
You’re not a lowlife by birth,
น ชจฺจา โหติ พฺราหฺมโณ✎ ร่าง
Na jaccā hoti brāhmaṇo;
nor by birth are you a brahmin.
กมฺมุนา วสโล โหติ✎ ร่าง
Kammunā vasalo hoti,
You’re a lowlife by your deeds,
กมฺมุนา โหติ พฺราหฺมโณติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kammunā hoti brāhmaṇo”ti.
by deeds you’re a brahmin.”
