“Kiṁ sūdha vittaṁ purisassa seṭṭhaṁ,
“What’s a person’s best wealth?
กึ สุ สุจิณฺณํ สุขมาวหาติ✎ ร่าง
Kiṁ su suciṇṇaṁ sukhamāvahāti;
What brings happiness when practiced well?
กึ สุ หเว สาธุตรํ รสานํ✎ ร่าง
Kiṁ su have sādutaraṁ rasānaṁ,
What’s the sweetest taste of all?
กถํชีวึ ชีวิตมาหุ เสฏฺฐํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kathaṁjīviṁ jīvitamāhu seṭṭhaṁ”.
The one they say has the best life: how do they live?”
สทฺธีธ วิตฺตํ ปุริสสฺส เสฏฺฐํ✎ ร่าง
“Saddhīdha vittaṁ purisassa seṭṭhaṁ,
“Faith here is a person’s best wealth.
ธมฺโม สุจิณฺโณ สุขมาวหาติ✎ ร่าง
Dhammo suciṇṇo sukhamāvahāti;
the teaching brings happiness when practiced well.
สจฺจํ หเว สาธุตรํ รสานํ✎ ร่าง
Saccaṁ have sādutaraṁ rasānaṁ,
Truth is the sweetest taste of all.
ปญฺญาชีวึ ชีวิตมาหุ เสฏฺฐํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Paññājīviṁ jīvitamāhu seṭṭhaṁ”.

“How do you cross the flood?

How do you get over suffering?
กถํ สุ ปริสุชฺฌติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kathaṁ su parisujjhati”.
How do you get purified?”
สทฺธาย ตรติ โอฆํ✎ ร่าง
“Saddhāya tarati oghaṁ,
“By faith you cross the flood,

อปฺปมาเทน อณฺณวํ✎ ร่าง
appamādena aṇṇavaṁ;
and by diligence the deluge.
วิริเยน ๑- ทุกฺขมจฺเจติ✎ ร่าง
Vīriyena dukkhamacceti,
By energy you get past suffering,
ปญฺญาย ปริสุชฺฌติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
paññāya parisujjhati”.
and you’re purified by wisdom.”
กถํ สุ ลภเต ปญฺญํ✎ ร่าง
“Kathaṁ su labhate paññaṁ,
“How do you get wisdom?
กถํ สุ วินฺทเต ธนํ✎ ร่าง
kathaṁ su vindate dhanaṁ;
How do you earn wealth?
กถํ สุ กิตฺตึ ปปฺโปติ✎ ร่าง
Kathaṁ su kittiṁ pappoti,
How do you get a good reputation?
กถํ มิตฺตานิ คนฺถติ✎ ร่าง
kathaṁ mittāni ganthati;
How do you hold on to friends?
อสฺมา โลกา ปรํ โลกํ✎ ร่าง
Asmā lokā paraṁ lokaṁ,
How do the departed not grieve
กถํ เปจฺจ น โสจติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kathaṁ pecca na socati”.
when passing from this world to the next?”
สทฺทหาโน อรหตํ✎ ร่าง
“Saddahāno arahataṁ,
“One who is diligent and discerning
ธมฺมํ นิพฺพานปตฺติยา✎ ร่าง
dhammaṁ nibbānapattiyā;
gains wisdom by wanting to learn,
สุสฺสูสํ ๒- ลภเต ปญฺญํ✎ ร่าง
Sussūsaṁ labhate paññaṁ,
having faith in the perfected ones,
อปฺปมตฺโต วิจกฺขโณ✎ ร่าง
appamatto vicakkhaṇo.
and the teaching for becoming extinguished.
ปฏิรูปการี ธุรวา✎ ร่าง
Patirūpakārī dhuravā,
Being responsible, acting appropriately,
อุฏฺฐาตา วินฺทเต ธนํ✎ ร่าง
uṭṭhātā vindate dhanaṁ;
and working hard you earn wealth.
สจฺเจน กิตฺตึ ปปฺโปติ✎ ร่าง
Saccena kittiṁ pappoti,
Truthfulness wins you a good reputation.
ททํ มิตฺตานิ คนฺถติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
dadaṁ mittāni ganthati.
You hold on to friends by giving.
ยสฺเสเต จตุโร ธมฺมา✎ ร่าง
Yassete caturo dhammā,
A faithful householder of discernment

สทฺธสฺส ฆรเมสิโน✎ ร่าง
saddhassa gharamesino;
who possesses these four qualities
สจฺจํ ธมฺโม ธิติ จาโค✎ ร่าง
Saccaṁ dhammo dhiti cāgo,
does not grieve after passing away:
ส ๓- เว เปจฺจ น โสจติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sa ve pecca na socati.
truth, principle, steadfastness, and generosity.
อิงฺฆ อญฺเญปิ ปุจฺฉสฺสุ✎ ร่าง
Iṅgha aññepi pucchassu,
Go ahead, ask others as well,
ปุถู สมณพฺราหฺมเณ✎ ร่าง
puthū samaṇabrāhmaṇe;
there are many ascetics and brahmins.
ยทิ สจฺจา ทมา จาคา✎ ร่าง
Yadi saccā damā cāgā,
See whether anything better is found
ขนฺตฺยา ภิยฺโยธ วิชฺชติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
khantyā bhiyyodha vijjati”.

กถํ นุทานิ ปุจฺเฉยฺยํ✎ ร่าง
“Kathaṁ nu dāni puccheyyaṁ,
“Why now would I question
ปุถู สมณพฺราหฺมเณ✎ ร่าง
Puthū samaṇabrāhmaṇe;

โยหํ ๔- อชฺช ปชานามิ✎ ร่าง
Yohaṁ ajja pajānāmi,
Today I understand
โย อตฺโถ ๕- สมฺปรายิโก✎ ร่าง
Yo attho samparāyiko.
what’s good for the next life.
อตฺถาย วต เม พุทฺโธ✎ ร่าง
Atthāya vata me buddho,
It was truly for my benefit
วาสายาฬวิมาคมา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Vāsāyāḷavimāgamā;
that the Buddha came to stay at Āḷavī.
โยหํ ๔- อชฺช ปชานามิ✎ ร่าง
Yohaṁ ajja pajānāmi,
Today I understand
ยตฺถ ทินฺนํ มหปฺผลํ✎ ร่าง
Yattha dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ.
where a gift is very fruitful.
โส อหํ วิจริสฺสามิ✎ ร่าง
So ahaṁ vicarissāmi,
I myself will journey
คามา คามํ ปุรา ปุรํ✎ ร่าง
Gāmā gāmaṁ purā puraṁ;
village to village, town to town,
นมสฺสมาโน สมฺพุทฺธํ✎ ร่าง
Namassamāno sambuddhaṁ,
paying homage to the Buddha,
ธมฺมสฺส จ สุธมฺมตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Dhammassa ca sudhammatan”ti.
and the clear rightness of the teaching!”
