จรํ วา ยทิ วา ติฏฺฐํ✎ ร่าง
Caraṁ vā yadi vā tiṭṭhaṁ,
Walking and standing,

nisinno uda vā sayaṁ;
sitting and lying down,
สมฺมิญฺเชติ ๑- ปสาเรติ✎ ร่าง
Samiñjeti pasāreti,
extending and contracting the limbs:
เอสา กายสฺส อิญฺชนา ฯ✎ ร่าง
esā kāyassa iñjanā.
these are the movements of the body.
อฏฺฐินฺหารูหิ ๒- สํยุตฺโต✎ ร่าง
Aṭṭhinahārusaṁyutto,
Linked together by bones and sinews,
ตจมํสาวเลปโน✎ ร่าง
tacamaṁsāvalepano;
plastered over with flesh and hide,
ฉวิยา กาโย ปฏิจฺฉนฺโน✎ ร่าง
Chaviyā kāyo paṭicchanno,
and covered by the skin,
ยถาภูตํ น ทิสฺสติ✎ ร่าง
yathābhūtaṁ na dissati.
the body is not seen as it is.
อนฺตปูโร อุทรปูโร✎ ร่าง
Antapūro udarapūro,
It’s full of guts and belly,
ยกเปฬสฺส ๓- วตฺถิโน✎ ร่าง
yakanapeḷassa vatthino;
liver and bladder,
หทยสฺส ปปฺผาสสฺส✎ ร่าง
Hadayassa papphāsassa,
heart and lungs,
วกฺกสฺส ปิหกสฺส จ✎ ร่าง
vakkassa pihakassa ca.
kidney and spleen,
สิงฺฆาณิกาย เขลสฺส✎ ร่าง
Siṅghāṇikāya kheḷassa,
spit and snot,

เสทสฺส จ เมทสฺส จ✎ ร่าง
sedassa ca medassa ca;
sweat and fat,
โลหิตสฺส ลสิกาย✎ ร่าง
Lohitassa lasikāya,
blood and synovial fluid,
ปิตฺตสฺส จ วสาย จ ฯ✎ ร่าง
pittassa ca vasāya ca.
bile and grease.
อถสฺส นวหิ โสเตหิ✎ ร่าง
Athassa navahi sotehi,
Then in nine streams
อสุจี สวติ สพฺพทา✎ ร่าง
asucī savati sabbadā;
the filth is always flowing.
อกฺขิมฺหา อกฺขิคูถโก✎ ร่าง
Akkhimhā akkhigūthako,
There is muck from the eyes,
กณฺณมฺหา กณฺณคูถโก✎ ร่าง
kaṇṇamhā kaṇṇagūthako.
wax from the ears,
สิงฺฆาณิกา จ นาสโต✎ ร่าง
Siṅghāṇikā ca nāsato,
and snot from the nostrils.
มุเขน วมเตกทา✎ ร่าง
mukhena vamatekadā;
The mouth sometimes vomits
ปิตฺตํ เสมฺหํ จ วมติ✎ ร่าง
Pittaṁ semhañca vamati,
bile and sometimes phlegm.
กายมฺหา เสทชลฺลิกา ฯ✎ ร่าง
kāyamhā sedajallikā.
And from the body, sweat and waste.
อถสฺส สุสิรํ สีสํ✎ ร่าง
Athassa susiraṁ sīsaṁ,
Then there is the hollow head
มตฺถลุงฺคสฺส ปูริตํ✎ ร่าง
matthaluṅgassa pūritaṁ;
all filled with brains.
สุภโต นํ มญฺญติ พาโล✎ ร่าง
Subhato naṁ maññati bālo,
Governed by ignorance,
อวิชฺชาย ปุรกฺขโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
avijjāya purakkhato.
the fool thinks it’s lovely.
ยทา ๔- จ โส มโต เสติ✎ ร่าง
Yadā ca so mato seti,
And when it lies dead,

Uddhumāto vinīlako;
bloated and livid,
อปวิฏฺโฐ สุสานสฺมึ✎ ร่าง
Apaviddho susānasmiṁ,

อนเปกฺขา โหนฺติ ญาตโย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Anapekkhā honti ñātayo.
the relatives forget it.
ขาทนฺติ นํ สุวาณา จ✎ ร่าง
Khādanti naṁ suvānā ca,
It’s devoured by dogs,

สิงฺคาลา ๖- จ วกา กิมี✎ ร่าง
siṅgālā ca vakā kimī;
by jackals, wolves, and worms.
กากา คิชฺฌา จ ขาทนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Kākā gijjhā ca khādanti,
It’s devoured by crows and vultures,
เย จญฺเญ สนฺติ ปาณิโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
ye caññe santi pāṇino.
and any other creatures there.
สุตฺวาน พุทฺธวจนํ✎ ร่าง
Sutvāna buddhavacanaṁ,
A wise mendicant here,

Bhikkhu paññāṇavā idha;
having heard the Buddha’s words,
โส โข นํ ปริชานาติ✎ ร่าง
So kho naṁ parijānāti,
fully understands it,
ยถาภูตญฺหิ ปสฺสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yathābhūtañhi passati.
for they see it as it is.
ยถา อิทํ ตถา เอตํ✎ ร่าง
Yathā idaṁ tathā etaṁ,
“As this is, so is that,
ยถา เอตํ ตถา อิทํ✎ ร่าง
Yathā etaṁ tathā idaṁ;
as that is, so is this.”
อชฺฌตฺตญฺจ พหิทฺธา จ✎ ร่าง
Ajjhattañca bahiddhā ca,
They’d blanch desire for the body
กาเย ฉนฺทํ วิราชเย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kāye chandaṁ virājaye.
inside and out.
ฉนฺทราควิรตฺโต โส✎ ร่าง
Chandarāgaviratto so,
That wise mendicant here
ภิกฺขุ ปญฺญาณวา อิธ✎ ร่าง
Bhikkhu paññāṇavā idha;
rid of desire and lust,
อชฺฌคา อมตํ สนฺตึ✎ ร่าง
Ajjhagā amataṁ santiṁ,
has found the peace free of death,
นิพฺพานปทมจฺจุตํ ๑- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Nibbānaṁ padamaccutaṁ.
extinguishment, the state that does not pass.
ทิปาทโกยํ ๒- อสุจิ✎ ร่าง
Dvipādakoyaṁ asuci,
This two-legged body is dirty and stinking,
ทุคฺคนฺโธ ปริหีรติ✎ ร่าง
Duggandho parihīrati;
full of different carcasses,
นานากุณปปริปูโร✎ ร่าง
Nānākuṇapaparipūro,
and oozing all over the place—
วิสฺสวนฺโต ตโต ตโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
Vissavanto tato tato.
but still it is cherished!
เอตาทิเสน กาเยน✎ ร่าง
Etādisena kāyena,
And if, on account of such a body,

โย มญฺเญ อุณฺณเมตเว✎ ร่าง
Yo maññe uṇṇametave;
someone prides themselves
ปรํ วา อวชาเนยฺย✎ ร่าง

กิมญฺญตฺร อทสฺสนาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kimaññatra adassanāti.
what is that but a failure to see?
