Unforeseen and unknown

มจฺจานํ อิธ ชีวิตํ✎ ร่าง
maccānaṁ idha jīvitaṁ;
is the extent of this mortal life—
กสิรญฺจ ปริตฺตญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Kasirañca parittañca,
hard and short
ตญฺจ ทุกฺเขน สญฺญุตํ ๖- ฯ✎ ร่าง
tañca dukkhena saṁyutaṁ.
and bound to pain.
น หิ โส อุปกฺกโม อตฺถิ✎ ร่าง
Na hi so upakkamo atthi,

เยน ชาตา น มิยฺยเร✎ ร่าง
yena jātā na miyyare;
those born will not die.
ชรมฺปิ ปตฺวา มรณํ✎ ร่าง
Jarampi patvā maraṇaṁ,
On reaching old age death follows:
เอวํธมฺมา หิ ปาณิโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
evaṁdhammā hi pāṇino.
such is the nature of living creatures.
ผลานมิว ปกฺกานํ✎ ร่าง
Phalānamiva pakkānaṁ,
As ripe fruit
ปาโต ปตนโต ๑- ภยํ✎ ร่าง
pāto patanato bhayaṁ;
are always in danger of falling,
เอวํ ชาตานมจฺจานํ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ jātāna maccānaṁ,
so mortals once born
นิจฺจํ มรณโต ภยํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
niccaṁ maraṇato bhayaṁ.
are always in danger of death.
ยถาปิ กุมฺภการสฺส✎ ร่าง
Yathāpi kumbhakārassa,
As clay pots
กตา มตฺติกภาชนา✎ ร่าง
katā mattikabhājanā;
made by a potter
สพฺเพ เภทปริยนฺตา✎ ร่าง
Sabbe bhedanapariyantā,
all end up being broken,
เอวํ มจฺจาน ชีวิตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
evaṁ maccāna jīvitaṁ.
so is the life of mortals.
ทหรา จ มหนฺตา จ✎ ร่าง
Daharā ca mahantā ca,
Young and old,
เย พาลา เย จ ปณฺฑิตา✎ ร่าง
ye bālā ye ca paṇḍitā;
foolish and wise—
สพฺเพ มจฺจุวสํ ยนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Sabbe maccuvasaṁ yanti,
all go under the sway of death;
สพฺเพ มจฺจุปรายนา ฯ✎ ร่าง
sabbe maccuparāyaṇā.
all are destined to die.
เตสํ มจฺจุปเรตานํ✎ ร่าง
Tesaṁ maccuparetānaṁ,
When those overcome by death
คจฺฉตํ ปรโลกโต✎ ร่าง
gacchataṁ paralokato;
leave this world for the next,
น ปิตา ตายเต ปุตฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Na pitā tāyate puttaṁ,
a father cannot protect his son,
ญาตี วา ปน ญาตเก ฯ✎ ร่าง
ñātī vā pana ñātake.
nor relatives their kin.
เปกฺขตํ เยว ญาตีนํ✎ ร่าง
Pekkhataṁyeva ñātīnaṁ,
See how, while relatives look on,
ปสฺส ลาลปฺปตํ ปุถุ✎ ร่าง
passa lālapataṁ puthu;
wailing profusely,
เอกเมโก ว มจฺจานํ✎ ร่าง
Ekamekova maccānaṁ,
mortals are led away one by one,
โควชฺโฌ วิย นิยฺยติ✎ ร่าง
govajjho viya nīyati.
like a cow to the slaughter.
เอวมพฺภาหโต โลโก✎ ร่าง
Evamabbhāhato loko,
And so the world is stricken

มจฺจุนา จ ชราย จ✎ ร่าง
Maccunā ca jarāya ca;
by old age and by death.
ตสฺมา ธีรา น โสจนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Tasmā dhīrā na socanti,
That is why the attentive do not grieve,
วิทิตฺวา โลกปริยายํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Viditvā lokapariyāyaṁ.
for they understand the way of the world.
ยสฺส มคฺคํ น ชานาสิ✎ ร่าง
Yassa maggaṁ na jānāsi,
For one whose path you do not know—
อาคตสฺส คตสฺส วา✎ ร่าง
āgatassa gatassa vā;
not whence they came nor where they went—
อุโภ อนฺเต อสมฺปสฺสํ✎ ร่าง
Ubho ante asampassaṁ,
you lament in vain,
นิรตฺถํ ปริเทวสิ✎ ร่าง
niratthaṁ paridevasi.
seeing neither end.
ปริเทวยมาโน เจ✎ ร่าง
Paridevayamāno ce,
If a bewildered person,
กิญฺจิ อตฺถํ ๓- อุทพฺพเห✎ ร่าง
Kiñcidatthaṁ udabbahe;
lamenting and self-harming,
สมฺมูโฬฺห หึสมตฺตานํ✎ ร่าง
Sammūḷho hiṁsamattānaṁ,
could extract any good from that,
กยิร ๔- เจนํ วิจกฺขโณ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Kayirā ce naṁ vicakkhaṇo.
then those who see clearly would do the same.
น หิ รุณฺเณน โสเกน✎ ร่าง
Na hi ruṇṇena sokena,
For not by weeping and wailing

สนฺตึ ปปฺโปติ เจตโส✎ ร่าง
Santiṁ pappoti cetaso;
will you find peace of heart.
ภิยฺยสฺสุปฺปชฺชเต ทุกฺขํ✎ ร่าง
Bhiyyassuppajjate dukkhaṁ,
It just gives rise to more suffering,
สรีรํ จุปหญฺญติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sarīraṁ cupahaññati.
and distresses your body.
กีโส วิวณฺโณ ภวติ✎ ร่าง
Kiso vivaṇṇo bhavati,
Growing thin and pale,

Hiṁsamattānamattanā;
you hurt yourself.
น เตน เปตา ปาเลนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Na tena petā pālenti,
It does nothing to help the dead:
นิรตฺถา ปริเทวนา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Niratthā paridevanā.
your lamentation is in vain.
โสกมปฺปชหํ ชนฺตุ✎ ร่าง
Sokamappajahaṁ jantu,
Unless a personage gives up grief,
ภิยฺโย ทุกฺขํ นิคจฺฉติ✎ ร่าง
Bhiyyo dukkhaṁ nigacchati;
they fall into suffering all the more.
อนุตฺถุนนฺโต กาลกตํ✎ ร่าง
Anutthunanto kālaṅkataṁ,
Bewailing those whose time has come,
โสกสฺส วสมนฺวคู ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sokassa vasamanvagū.
you fall under the sway of grief.
อญฺเญปิ ปสฺส คมิเน✎ ร่าง
Aññepi passa gamine,
See, too, other folk departing,
ยถากมฺมูปเค นเร✎ ร่าง
Yathākammupage nare;
passing on according to their deeds;
มจฺจุโน วสมาคมฺม✎ ร่าง
Maccuno vasamāgamma,
fallen under the sway of death,
ผนฺทนฺเตวิธ ปาณิโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
Phandantevidha pāṇino.
beings flounder while still here.
เยน เยน หิ มญฺญนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Yena yena hi maññanti,
For whatever you imagine it is,
ตโต ตํ โหติ อญฺญถา✎ ร่าง
Tato taṁ hoti aññathā;
it turns out to be something else.
เอตาทิโส วินาภาโว✎ ร่าง
Etādiso vinābhāvo,
Such is separation:
ปสฺส โลกสฺส ปริยายํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Passa lokassa pariyāyaṁ.
see the way of the world!
อปิ ๑- วสฺสสตํ ชีเว✎ ร่าง
Api vassasataṁ jīve,
Even if a human lives
ภิยฺโย วา ปน มาณโว✎ ร่าง
Bhiyyo vā pana māṇavo;
a hundred years or more,
ญาติสงฺฆา วินา โหติ✎ ร่าง
Ñātisaṅghā vinā hoti,
they are parted from their family circle,
ชหาติ อิธ ชีวิตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Jahāti idha jīvitaṁ.
they leave this life behind.
ตสฺมา อรหโต สุตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Tasmā arahato sutvā,
Therefore, having learned from the Perfected One,
วิเนยฺย ปริเทวิตํ✎ ร่าง
Vineyya paridevitaṁ;
dispel lamentation.
เปตํ กาลกตํ ทิตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Petaṁ kālaṅkataṁ disvā,
Seeing the dead and departed, think:
เนโส ลพฺภา มยา อิติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Neso labbhā mayā iti.
“I cannot escape this.”
ยถา สรณมาทิตฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Yathā saraṇamādittaṁ,
As one would extinguish

วารินา ปรินิพฺพเย✎ ร่าง
Vārinā parinibbaye;
a blazing refuge with water,

ปณฺฑิโต กุสโล นโร✎ ร่าง
Paṇḍito kusalo naro;
astute, and skilled person—
ขิปฺปมุปฺปติตํ โสกํ✎ ร่าง
Khippamuppatitaṁ sokaṁ,
would swiftly blow away grief that comes up,
วาโต ตุลํว ๓- ธํสเย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Vāto tūlaṁva dhaṁsaye.
like the wind a tuft of cotton.
ปริเทวํ ปชปฺปญฺจ✎ ร่าง
Paridevaṁ pajappañca,
One who seeks their own happiness
โทมนสฺสญฺจ อตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
Domanassañca attano;
would pluck out the dart from themselves—
อตฺตโน สุขเมสาโน✎ ร่าง
Attano sukhamesāno,
the wailing and moaning,
อพฺพุเฬฺห ๔- สลฺลมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
Abbahe sallamattano.
and sadness inside.
อพฺพุฬฺหสลฺโล อสิโต✎ ร่าง
Abbūḷhasallo asito,
With dart plucked out, unattached,
สนฺตึ ปปฺปุยฺย เจตโส✎ ร่าง
santiṁ pappuyya cetaso;
having found peace of mind,
สพฺพํ โสกํ อติกฺกนฺโต✎ ร่าง
Sabbasokaṁ atikkanto,
overcoming all sorrow,
อโสโก โหติ นิพฺพุโตติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
asoko hoti nibbutoti.
one is sorrowless and quenched.
