Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā āneñjena samādhinā nisinno hoti.
But at that time the Buddha was sitting immersed in imperturbable meditation.
อถ โข เตสํ ภิกฺขูนํ เอตทโหสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho tesaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ etadahosi:
Then those mendicants thought,
กตเมน นุ
โข ภควา วิหาเรน เอตรหิ วิหรตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“katamena nu kho bhagavā vihārena etarahi viharatī”ti?
“What kind of meditation is the Buddha practicing right now?”
อถ โข เตสํ ภิกฺขูนํ
เอตทโหสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho tesaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ etadahosi:
They thought,
อาเนญฺเชน โข ภควา วิหาเรน เอตรหิ วิหรตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“āneñjena kho bhagavā vihārena etarahi viharatī”ti.
“He is practicing the imperturbable meditation.”
สพฺเพว อาเนญฺเชน สมาธินา นิสีทึสุ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sabbeva āneñjasamādhinā nisīdiṁsu.
They all sat in imperturbable meditation.
อถ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท
อภิกฺกนฺตาย รตฺติยา นิกฺขนฺเต ปฐเม ยาเม อุฏฺฐายาสนา เอกํสํ
อุตฺตราสงฺคํ ๑- กตฺวา เยน ภควา เตนญฺชลิมฺปณาเมตฺวา ภควนฺตํ

Atha kho āyasmā ānando abhikkantāya rattiyā, nikkhante paṭhame yāme, uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
And then, as the night was getting late, in the first watch of the night, Venerable Ānanda rose from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his cupped palms toward the Buddha and said,
อภิกฺกนฺตา ภนฺเต รตฺติ นิกฺขนฺโต ปฐโม ยาโม
จิรนิสินฺนา อาคนฺตุกา ภิกฺขู✎ ร่าง
“abhikkantā, bhante, ratti; nikkhanto paṭhamo yāmo; ciranisinnā āgantukā bhikkhū;
“Sir, the night is getting late. It is the first watch of the night, and the visiting mendicants have been sitting long.
ปฏิสมฺโมทตุ ภนฺเต ภควา
อาคนฺตุเกหิ ภิกฺขูหีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
paṭisammodatu, bhante, bhagavā āgantukehi bhikkhūhī”ti.
Sir, please greet the visiting mendicants.”
เอวํ วุตฺเต ภควา ตุณฺหี อโหสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā tuṇhī ahosi.
But the Buddha kept silent.
ทุติยมฺปิ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท อภิกฺกนฺตาย รตฺติยา
นิกฺขนฺเต มชฺฌิเม ยาเม อุฏฺฐายาสนา เอกํสํ อุตฺตราสงฺคํ กตฺวา เยน
ภควา เตนญฺชลิมฺปณาเมตฺวา ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Dutiyampi kho āyasmā ānando abhikkantāya rattiyā, nikkhante majjhime yāme, uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
For a second time, as the night was getting late, in the middle watch of the night, Ānanda rose from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his cupped palms toward the Buddha and said,

“abhikkantā, bhante, ratti;
“Sir, the night is getting late. It is the second watch of the night, and the visiting mendicants have been sitting long.
นิกฺขนฺโต มชฺฌิโม ยาโม✎ ร่าง
nikkhanto majjhimo yāmo;
จิรนิสินฺนา อาคนฺตุกา ภิกฺขู✎ ร่าง
ciranisinnā āgantukā bhikkhū;
ปฏิสมฺโมทตุ ภนฺเต ภควา อาคนฺตุเกหิ ภิกฺขูหีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
paṭisammodatu, bhante, bhagavā āgantukehi bhikkhūhī”ti.
Sir, please greet the visiting mendicants.”
ทุติยมฺปิ โข
ภควา ตุณฺหี อโหสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Dutiyampi kho bhagavā tuṇhī ahosi.
But for a second time the Buddha kept silent.
ตติยมฺปิ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท อภิกฺกนฺตาย
รตฺติยา นิกฺขนฺเต ปจฺฉิเม ยาเม อุทฺธเสฺต ๒- อรุเณ นนฺทิมุขิยา
รตฺติยา อุฏฺฐายาสนา เอกํสํ อุตฺตราสงฺคํ กตฺวา เยน ภควา
เตนญฺชลิมฺปณาเมตฺวา ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Tatiyampi kho āyasmā ānando abhikkantāya rattiyā, nikkhante pacchime yāme, uddhaste aruṇe, nandimukhiyā rattiyā uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā yena bhagavā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
For a third time, as the night was getting late, in the last watch of the night, as dawn stirred, bringing joy to the night, Ānanda rose from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his cupped palms toward the Buddha and said,

“Sir, the night is getting late. It is the last watch of the night; dawn stirs, bringing joy to the night, and the visiting mendicants have been sitting long.

อุทฺธโสฺต อรุโณ✎ ร่าง
uddhasto aruṇo;

อายสฺมนฺตํ อานนฺทํ อามนฺเตสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā tamhā samādhimhā vuṭṭhahitvā āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ āmantesi:
Then the Buddha emerged from that immersion and addressed Ānanda,
สเจ โข ตฺวํ อานนฺท ชาเนยฺยาสิ
เอตฺตกมฺปิ เต น ปฏิภาเสยฺย✎ ร่าง
“sace kho tvaṁ, ānanda, jāneyyāsi ettakampi te nappaṭibhāseyya.
“If you’d known, Ānanda, you wouldn’t have said so much.
อหญฺจานนฺท อิมานิ จ ปญฺจภิกฺขุสตานิ
สพฺเพว อาเนญฺชสมาธินา นิสินฺนาติ ๑- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ahañca, ānanda, imāni ca pañca bhikkhusatāni sabbeva āneñjasamādhinā nisīdimhā”ti.
Both I and these five hundred mendicants have been sitting in imperturbable meditation.”
อถ โข ภควา
เอตมตฺถํ วิทิตฺวา ตายํ เวลายํ อิมํ อุทานํ อุทาเนสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:
Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

“Yassa jito kāmakaṇḍako,
“A mendicant who has beaten the thorn of sensuality—

สุขทุกฺเขสุ น เวธตี ส ภิกฺขูติ ฯ ตติยํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
