Nidhiṁ nidheti puriso,
A person stores away their savings

in a deep trove by the water’s edge:
อตฺเถ กิจฺเจ สมุปฺปนฺเน✎ ร่าง
Atthe kicce samuppanne,
“When need arises
อตฺถาย เม ภวิสฺสติ✎ ร่าง
atthāya me bhavissati.
it will be there to help
ราชโต วา ทุรุตฺตสฺส✎ ร่าง
Rājato vā duruttassa,
free me from rulers if I am slandered,
โจรโต ปีฬิตสฺส วา✎ ร่าง
corato pīḷitassa vā;
or from bandits if harassed,
อิณสฺส วา ปโมกฺขาย✎ ร่าง
Iṇassa vā pamokkhāya,
or to release me from debt,
ทุพฺภิกฺเข อาปทาสุ วา✎ ร่าง
dubbhikkhe āpadāsu vā;
or in case of famine or losses.”
เอตทตฺถาย โลกสฺมึ✎ ร่าง
Etadatthāya lokasmiṁ,
What the world calls savings
นิธิ นาม นิธิยฺยติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
nidhi nāma nidhīyati.
get stored away for such reasons.
ตาวสฺสุนิหิโต สนฺโต✎ ร่าง
Tāvassunihito santo,
But no matter how well stored away they are
คมฺภีเร อุทกนฺติเก✎ ร่าง
gambhīre odakantike;
in a deep pit by the water’s edge,
น สพฺโพ สพฺพทา เยว✎ ร่าง
Na sabbo sabbadā eva,
all their savings will fail
ตสฺส ตํ อุปกปฺปติ✎ ร่าง
tassa taṁ upakappati.
to aid them all the time.
นิธิ วา ฐานา จวติ✎ ร่าง
Nidhi vā ṭhānā cavati,
For perhaps those savings shift from there,

saññā vāssa vimuyhati;
or they forget what marks the site,
นาคา วา อปนาเมนฺติ✎ ร่าง

ยกฺขา วาปิ หรนฺติ นํ✎ ร่าง
yakkhā vāpi haranti naṁ.
or spirits carry them away,
อปฺปิยา วาปิ ทายาทา✎ ร่าง
Appiyā vāpi dāyādā,
or unloved heirs

uddharanti apassato;
secretly unearth them.

Yadā puññakkhayo hoti,
When their merit is used up,
สพฺพเมตํ วินสฺสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sabbametaṁ vinassati.
all of that will vanish.

Yassa dānena sīlena,
But by giving and morality,

Nidhī sunihito hoti,

itthiyā purisassa vā.
keeps their savings safe.
เจติยมฺหิ จ สงฺเฆ วา✎ ร่าง
Cetiyamhi ca saṅghe vā,
At a shrine or with the Saṅgha,
ปุคฺคเล อติถีสุ วา✎ ร่าง
puggale atithīsu vā;
มาตริ ปิตริ วาปิ✎ ร่าง
Mātari pitari cāpi,
with mother or father,
อโถ เชฏฺฐมฺหิ ภาตริ✎ ร่าง
atho jeṭṭhamhi bhātari.
or else an elder sibling,
เอโส นิธิ สุนิหิโต✎ ร่าง
Eso nidhi sunihito,
those savings are kept safe,
อเชยฺโย อนุคามิโก✎ ร่าง
ajeyyo anugāmiko;
they stay with you, undecaying.
ปหาย คมนีเยสุ✎ ร่าง
Pahāya gamanīyesu,
We must go on leaving all behind,
เอตํ อาทาย คจฺฉติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
etaṁ ādāya gacchati.
only this you take when you go.
อสาธารณมญฺเญสํ✎ ร่าง
Asādhāraṇamaññesaṁ,
You don’t have to share it with others,
อโจรหรโณ นิธิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
acorāharaṇo nidhi;
no thief makes off with your savings.
กยิราถ ธีโร ปุญฺญานิ✎ ร่าง
Kayirātha dhīro puññāni,
An attentive one would make merit,
โย นิธิ อนุคามิโก✎ ร่าง
yo nidhi anugāmiko.
the savings that stay with you.
เอส เทวมนุสฺสานํ✎ ร่าง
Esa devamanussānaṁ,
Such savings grant every desire
สพฺพกามทโท นิธิ✎ ร่าง
sabbakāmadado nidhi;
of gods and humans too.
ยํ ยํ เทวาภิปตฺเถนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Yaṁ yadevābhipatthenti,
Whatever it is that they wish for
สพฺพเมเตน ลพฺภติ✎ ร่าง
sabbametena labbhati.
through this they have it all.
สุวณฺณตา สุสรตา✎ ร่าง
Suvaṇṇatā susaratā,
Good looks, a sweet voice,
สุสณฺฐานํ ๑- สุรูปตา✎ ร่าง
susaṇṭhānā surūpatā;
a good shape, and good appearance,
อาธิปจฺจํ ปริวาโร✎ ร่าง
Ādhipaccaparivāro,
leadership and followers:
สพฺพเมเตน ลพฺภติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sabbametena labbhati.
through this they have it all.
ปเทสรชฺชํ อิสฺสริยํ✎ ร่าง
Padesarajjaṁ issariyaṁ,
Sovereignty of a local kingdom,
จกฺกวตฺติสุขํ ปิยํ✎ ร่าง
cakkavattisukhaṁ piyaṁ;
the happiness of a Wheel-Turning Monarch,
เทวรชฺชมฺปิ ทิพฺเพสุ✎ ร่าง
Devarajjampi dibbesu,
even kingship in the heavens:
สพฺพเมเตน ลพฺภติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sabbametena labbhati.
through this they have it all.
มานุสฺสิกา จ สมฺปตฺติ✎ ร่าง
Mānussikā ca sampatti,
Human success,
เทวโลเก จ ยา รติ✎ ร่าง
devaloke ca yā rati;
heavenly delight,
ยา จ นิพฺพานสมฺปตฺติ✎ ร่าง
Yā ca nibbānasampatti,
attaining extinguishment:
สพฺพเมเตน ลพฺภติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sabbametena labbhati.
through this they have it all.
มิตฺตสมฺปทมาคมฺม✎ ร่าง
Mittasampadamāgamma,
Relying on having good friends,
โยนิโส เจ ปยุญฺชโต✎ ร่าง
yonisova payuñjato;
rational application of effort,
วิชฺชาวิมุตฺติวสีภาโว✎ ร่าง
Vijjāvimuttivasībhāvo,
mastery of knowledge and freedom:
สพฺพเมเตน ลพฺภติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sabbametena labbhati.
through this they have it all.

Paṭisambhidā vimokkhā ca,
Analytical knowledge, the liberations,

Evaṁ mahatthikā esā,
This accomplishment in merit

is so very beneficial.

That’s why the attentive and the astute
ปณฺฑิตา กตปุญฺญตนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
paṇḍitā katapuññatanti.
praise the making of merit.
