[๒๓๑] พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า
ทามลิ กิจไม่มีแก่พราหมณ์ เพราะว่า พราหมณ์ทำกิจเสร็จ
แล้ว บุคคลยังไม่ได้ท่าจอดในแม่น้ำทั้งหลาย เพียงใด เขา
เป็นสัตว์เกิด ต้องพยายาม ด้วยตัวทุกอย่าง เพียงนั้น ก็ผู้นั้น
ได้ท่าเป็นที่จอดแล้ว ยืนอยู่บนบก ไม่ต้องพยายาม เพราะ
ว่า เขาเป็นผู้ถึงฝั่งแล้ว ฯ
ดูกรทามลิเทวบุตร นี้เป็นข้ออุปมาแห่งพราหมณ์ ผู้มีอาสวะ
สิ้นแล้ว มีปัญญาเพ่งพินิจ ฯ
พราหมณ์นั้น ถึงที่สุดแห่งชาติและมรณะแล้ว ไม่ต้องพยายาม
เพราะเป็นผู้ถึงฝั่งแล้ว ฯ
นตฺถิ กิจฺจํ พฺราหฺมณสฺส ๓- [ทามลีติ ภควา✎ ร่าง
“Natthi kiccaṁ brāhmaṇassa,
“The brahmin has nothing left to do,”

said the Buddha to Dāmali,
กตกิจฺโจ หิ ๔-
พฺราหฺมโณ✎ ร่าง
Katakicco hi brāhmaṇo;
“for they’ve completed their task.
ยาว น คาธํ ลภติ นทีสุ✎ ร่าง
Yāva na gādhaṁ labhati nadīsu,
So long as a personage fails to gain a footing in the river,
อายูหติ สพฺพคตฺเตภิ ชนฺตุ✎ ร่าง
Āyūhati sabbagattebhi jantu;
they swim with every limb.
คาธญฺจ ลทฺธาน ถเล ฐิโต โส✎ ร่าง
Gādhañca laddhāna thale ṭhito yo,
But someone who has gained a footing and stands on dry land
นายูหติ ปารคโต หิ โหติ✎ ร่าง
Nāyūhatī pāragato hi sova.
need not swim, for they have reached the far shore.
เอสูปมา ทามลิ พฺราหฺมณสฺส✎ ร่าง
Esūpamā dāmali brāhmaṇassa,
Dāmali, this is a simile for the brahmin,
ขีณาสวสฺส นิปกสฺส ฌายิโน✎ ร่าง
Khīṇāsavassa nipakassa jhāyino;
alert, a meditator who has ended defilements.
ปปฺปุยฺย ชาติมรณสฺส อนฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Pappuyya jātimaraṇassa antaṁ,
Since they’ve reached the end of rebirth and death,
นายูหติ ปารคโต หิ โหตีติ ฯ
ฉฏ✎ ร่าง
Nāyūhatī pāragato hi so”ti.
they need not swim, for they have reached the far shore.”
