เอกมนฺตํ ฐิโต โข เขโม เทวปุตฺโต ภควโต สนฺติเก
อิมา คาถาโย อภาสิ✎ ร่าง
Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho khemo devaputto bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:
Standing to one side, the godling Khema recited these verses in the Buddha’s presence:

จรนฺติ พาลา ทุมฺเมธา✎ ร่าง
“Caranti bālā dummedhā,
“Fools and simpletons behave
อมิตฺเตเนว อตฺตนา✎ ร่าง
amitteneva attanā;
like their own worst enemies,
กโรนฺติ ๑- ปาปกํ กมฺมํ✎ ร่าง
Karontā pāpakaṁ kammaṁ,
doing wicked deeds
ยํ โหติ กฏุกปฺผลํ✎ ร่าง
yaṁ hoti kaṭukapphalaṁ.
that ripen as bitter fruit.
น ตํ กมฺมํ กตํ สาธุ✎ ร่าง
Na taṁ kammaṁ kataṁ sādhu,
It’s not good to do a deed
ยํ กตฺวา อนุตปฺปติ✎ ร่าง
yaṁ katvā anutappati;
that plagues you later on,
ยสฺส อสฺสุมุโข โรทํ✎ ร่าง
Yassa assumukho rodaṁ,
for which you weep and wail,
วิปากํ ปฏิเสวติ✎ ร่าง
vipākaṁ paṭisevati.
as its effect stays with you.
ตญฺจ กมฺมํ กตํ สาธุ✎ ร่าง
Tañca kammaṁ kataṁ sādhu,
It is good to do a deed
ยํ กตฺวา นานุตปฺปติ✎ ร่าง
yaṁ katvā nānutappati;
that doesn’t plague you later on,
ยสฺส ปติโต ๒- สุมโน✎ ร่าง
Yassa patīto sumano,
that gladdens and cheers,
วิปากํ ปฏิเสวติ✎ ร่าง
vipākaṁ paṭisevati.
as its effect stays with you.”
ปฏิกจฺเจว ๓- ตํ กยิรา✎ ร่าง
Paṭikacceva taṁ kayirā,
“As a precaution, you should do
ยํ ชญฺญา หิตมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
yaṁ jaññā hitamattano;
what you know is for your own welfare.
น สากฏิกจินฺตาย✎ ร่าง
Na sākaṭikacintāya,
A thinker, a wise one would not proceed
มนฺตาธีโร ปรกฺกโม✎ ร่าง
mantā dhīro parakkame.
thinking like the cart driver.
ยถา สากฏิโก ปสตฺถํ✎ ร่าง
Yathā sākaṭiko maṭṭhaṁ,
Suppose a cart driver leaves the highway,
สมํ หิตฺวา มหาปถํ✎ ร่าง
samaṁ hitvā mahāpathaṁ;
so even and well compacted.
วิสมํ มคฺคมารุยฺห✎ ร่าง
Visamaṁ maggamāruyha,
They enter upon a rough road,
อกฺขจฺฉินฺโนว ฌายติ✎ ร่าง
akkhacchinnova jhāyati.
and fret as soon as their axle is broken.
เอวํ ธมฺมา อปกฺกมฺม✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ dhammā apakkamma,
So too, a dullard leaves the good

อธมฺมมนุวตฺติย✎ ร่าง
adhammamanuvattiya;
to follow what’s against the good.
มนฺโท มจฺจุมุขํ ปตฺโต✎ ร่าง
Mando maccumukhaṁ patto,
Fallen in the jaws of death,
อกฺขจฺฉินฺโนว ฌายตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
akkhacchinnova jhāyatī”ti.
they fret like one whose axle is broken.”
