Seyyathāpi, tissa, dve purisā—
Suppose, Tissa, there were two individuals.

อมคฺคกุสโล เอโก ปุริโส มคฺคกุสโล✎ ร่าง
eko puriso amaggakusalo, eko puriso maggakusalo.
One was not skilled in the path, the other was.
ตเมนํ โส อมคฺคกุสโล ปุริโส
อมุํ มคฺคกุสลํ ปุริสํ มคฺคํ ปุจฺเฉยฺย✎ ร่าง
Tamenaṁ so amaggakusalo puriso amuṁ maggakusalaṁ purisaṁ maggaṁ puccheyya.
The one not skilled in the path would question the one skilled in the path,
โส เอวํ วเทยฺย✎ ร่าง
So evaṁ vadeyya:
who would reply:
เอวํ ๒-
โภ ปุริส อยํ มคฺโค✎ ร่าง
‘ehi, bho purisa, ayaṁ maggo.
‘Come, my man, this is the path.
เตน มุหุตฺตํ คจฺฉ✎ ร่าง
Tena muhuttaṁ gaccha.
Go down it an hour,
เตน มุหุตฺตํ คนฺตฺวา
ทกฺขิสฺสสิ เทฺวธาปถํ ๓- ตตฺถ วามํ มุญฺจิตฺวา ทกฺขิณํ คณฺห✎ ร่าง
Tena muhuttaṁ gantvā dakkhissasi dvedhāpathaṁ, tattha vāmaṁ muñcitvā dakkhiṇaṁ gaṇhāhi.
and you’ll see a fork in the road. Ignore the left, and take the right-hand path.
เตน
มุหุตฺตํ คจฺฉ✎ ร่าง
Tena muhuttaṁ gaccha.
Go an hour more,
เตน มุหุตฺตํ คนฺตฺวา ทกฺขิสฺสสิ ติพฺพํ วนสณฺฑํ✎ ร่าง
Tena muhuttaṁ gantvā dakkhissasi tibbaṁ vanasaṇḍaṁ.
and you’ll see a dense forest grove.
เตน มุหุตฺตํ คจฺฉ✎ ร่าง
Tena muhuttaṁ gaccha.
Go an hour more,
เตน มุหุตฺตํ คนฺตฺวา ทกฺขิสฺสสิ มหนฺตํ นินฺนํ

and you’ll see an expanse of low-lying marshes.

Tena muhuttaṁ gaccha.
Go an hour more,
เตน มุหุตฺตํ คนฺตฺวา ทกฺขิสฺสสิ
โสพฺภํ ปปาตํ✎ ร่าง
Tena muhuttaṁ gantvā dakkhissasi sobbhaṁ papātaṁ.
and you’ll see a large, steep cliff.
เตน มุหุตฺตํ คจฺฉ✎ ร่าง
Tena muhuttaṁ gaccha.
Go an hour more,
เตน มุหุตฺตํ คนฺตฺวา
ทกฺขิสฺสสิ สมํ ภูมิภาคํ รมณียํ ๑- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tena muhuttaṁ gantvā dakkhissasi samaṁ bhūmibhāgaṁ ramaṇīyan’ti.
and you’ll see level, cleared parkland.’
อุปมา โข มฺยายํ ติสฺส กตา อตฺถสฺส วิญฺญาปนาย✎ ร่าง
Upamā kho myāyaṁ, tissa, katā atthassa viññāpanāya.
I’ve made up this simile to make a point.

ปุริโส อมคฺคกุสโลติ โข ติสฺส ปุถุชฺชนสฺเสตํ

‘puriso amaggakusalo’ti kho, tissa, puthujjanassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘A person who is not skilled in the path’ is a term for an ordinary unlearned person.
ปุริโส มคฺคกุสโลติ โข ติสฺส ตถาคตสฺเสตํ อธิวจนํ อรหโต
สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสฺส ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Puriso maggakusalo’ti kho, tissa, tathāgatassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ arahato sammāsambuddhassa.
‘A person who is skilled in the path’ is a term for the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha.
เทฺวธาปโถติ โข ติสฺส วิจิกิจฺฉาเยตํ อธิวจนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Dvedhāpatho’ti kho, tissa, vicikicchāyetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘A fork in the road’ is a term for doubt.
วาโม มคฺโคติ โข ติสฺส อฏฺฐงฺคิกสฺเสตํ มิจฺฉามคฺคสฺส อธิวจนํ ฯ
เสยฺยถีทํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Vāmo maggo’ti kho, tissa, aṭṭhaṅgikassetaṁ micchāmaggassa adhivacanaṁ, seyyathidaṁ—
‘The left-hand path’ is a term for the wrong eightfold path, that is,
มิจฺฉาทิฏฺฐิยา ฯเปฯ มิจฺฉาสมาธิสฺส ฯ✎ ร่าง
micchādiṭṭhiyā …pe… micchāsamādhissa.
wrong view … wrong immersion.
ทกฺขิโณ มคฺโคติ
โข ติสฺส อริยสฺเสตํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกสฺส มคฺคสฺส อธิวจนํ ฯ เสยฺยถีทํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Dakkhiṇo maggo’ti kho, tissa, ariyassetaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa adhivacanaṁ, seyyathidaṁ—
‘The right-hand path’ is a term for the noble eightfold path, that is,
สมฺมาทิฏฺฐิยา ฯเปฯ สมฺมาสมาธิสฺส ฯ✎ ร่าง
sammādiṭṭhiyā …pe… sammāsamādhissa.
right view … right immersion.

‘Tibbo vanasaṇḍo’ti kho, tissa, avijjāyetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘A dense forest grove’ is a term for ignorance.
มหนฺตํ นินฺนํ ปลฺลลนฺติ โข ติสฺส
กามานเมตํ อธิวจนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Mahantaṁ ninnaṁ pallalan’ti kho, tissa, kāmānametaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘An expanse of low-lying marshes’ is a term for sensual pleasures.
โสพฺโภ ปปาโตติ โข ติสฺส โกธุปายาสสฺเสตํ
อธิวจนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Sobbho papāto’ti kho, tissa, kodhūpāyāsassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘A large, steep cliff’ is a term for anger and distress.
สโม ภูมิภาโค รมณีโยติ โข ติสฺส นิพฺพานสฺเสตํ
อธิวจนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘Samo bhūmibhāgo ramaṇīyo’ti kho, tissa, nibbānassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘Level, cleared parkland’ is a term for extinguishment.
อภิรม ติสฺส อภิรม ติสฺส✎ ร่าง
Abhirama, tissa, abhirama, tissa.
Rejoice, Tissa, rejoice!
อหโมวาเทน อหมนุคฺคเหน
อหมนุสาสนิยาติ ๒- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ahamovādena ahamanuggahena ahamanusāsaniyā”ti.
I am here with advice, with support, with instruction.”

That is what the Buddha said.
