เอกํ สมยํ ภควา โกฬิเยสุ วิหรติ อุตฺตรนฺนาม
โกฬิยานํ นิคโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā koliyesu viharati uttaraṁ nāma koliyānaṁ nigamo.
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Koliyans, where they have a town named Uttarakā.

อถ โข ปาฏลิโย คามณี เยน ภควา
เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ
นิสีทิ ฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข ปาฏลิโย คามณี ภควนฺตํ

Atha kho pāṭaliyo gāmaṇi yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho pāṭaliyo gāmaṇi bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Pāṭaliya the chief went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
สุตมฺเมตํ ภนฺเต✎ ร่าง
“sutaṁ metaṁ, bhante:
“Sir, I have heard this:
สมโณ โคตโม มายํ ชานาตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘samaṇo gotamo māyaṁ jānātī’ti.
‘The ascetic Gotama knows deceit.’
เย
เต ภนฺเต เอวมาหํสุ สมโณ โคตโม มายํ ชานาตีติ ฯ กจฺจิ เต
ภนฺเต ภควโต วุตฺตวาทิโน น จ ภควนฺตํ อภูเตน อพฺภาจิกฺขนฺติ
ธมฺมสฺส จานุธมฺมํ พฺยากโรนฺติ น จ โกจิ สหธมฺมิโก วาทานุปาโต
คารยฺหํ ฐานํ อาคจฺฉติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ye te, bhante, evamāhaṁsu: ‘samaṇo gotamo māyaṁ jānātī’ti, kacci te, bhante, bhagavato vuttavādino, na ca bhagavantaṁ abhūtena abbhācikkhanti, dhammassa cānudhammaṁ byākaronti, na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānuvādo gārayhaṁ ṭhānaṁ āgacchati?
Do those who say this repeat what the Buddha has said, and not misrepresent him with an untruth? Is their explanation in line with the teaching? Are there any legitimate grounds for rebuttal and criticism?

อนพฺภกฺขาตุกามา ๑- หิ มยํ ภนฺเต

Anabbhācikkhitukāmā hi mayaṁ, bhante, bhagavantan”ti.
For we don’t want to misrepresent the Blessed One.”
เย เต คามณิ เอวมาหํสุ สมโณ โคตโม มายํ
ชานาตีติ ฯ วุตฺตวาทิโน เจว เม เต น จ มํ อภูเตน อพฺภาจิกฺขนฺติ
ธมฺมสฺส จานุธมฺมํ พฺยากโรนฺติ น จ โกจิ สหธมฺมิโก
วาทานุปาโต คารยฺหํ ฐานํ อาคจฺฉตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Ye te, gāmaṇi, evamāhaṁsu: ‘samaṇo gotamo māyaṁ jānātī’ti, vuttavādino ceva me, te na ca maṁ abhūtena abbhācikkhanti, dhammassa cānudhammaṁ byākaronti, na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānuvādo gārayhaṁ ṭhānaṁ āgacchatī”ti.
“Chief, those who say this repeat what I have said, and don’t misrepresent me with an untruth. Their explanation is in line with the teaching, and there are no legitimate grounds for rebuttal and criticism.”
สจฺจํเยว กิร โภ
มยํ เตสํ สมณพฺราหฺมณานํ น สทฺทหาม✎ ร่าง
“Saccaṁyeva kira, bho, mayaṁ tesaṁ samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ na saddahāma:
“Sir, we didn’t believe that what those ascetics and brahmins said was really true.
สมโณ โคตโม มายํ
ชานาตีติ ฯ สมโณ ขลุ โภ โคตโม มายาวีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘samaṇo gotamo māyaṁ jānātī’ti, samaṇo khalu bho gotamo māyāvī”ti.
But it seems the ascetic Gotama is deceitful!”
โย นุ โข คามณิ
เอวํ วเทติ อหํ มายํ ชานามีติ ฯ โส เอวํ วเทติ อหํ มายาวีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Yo nu kho, gāmaṇi, evaṁ vadeti: ‘ahaṁ māyaṁ jānāmī’ti, so evaṁ vadeti: ‘ahaṁ māyāvī’”ti.
“Chief, does someone who says ‘I know deceit’ also say ‘I am deceitful’?”
ตเถว ตํ ภควา โหติ ตเถว ตํ สุคต โหตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Tatheva taṁ bhagavā hoti, tatheva taṁ sugata hotī”ti.
“That’s right, Blessed One! That’s right, Holy One!”
เตนหิ คามณิ
ตญฺเญเวตฺถ ปฏิปุจฺฉิสฺสามิ ฯ ยถา เต ขเมยฺย ตถา ตํ พฺยากเรยฺยาสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Tena hi, gāmaṇi, taññevettha paṭipucchissāmi; yathā te khameyya, tathā taṁ byākareyyāsi—
“Well then, chief, I’ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like.
