At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

“Ekamidāhaṁ, bhikkhave, samayaṁ uruvelāyaṁ viharāmi najjā nerañjarāya tīre ajapālanigrodhe paṭhamābhisambuddho.
“Mendicants, this one time, when I was first awakened, I was staying in Uruvelā at the goatherd’s banyan tree on the bank of the Nerañjarā River.

‘One without respect and reverence lives in suffering.

Then it occurred to me:
อปริปูรสฺส โข เม ๑- สีลกฺขนฺธสฺส ปาริปูริยา อญฺญํ สมณํ วา
พฺราหฺมณํ วา สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา ๒- อุปนิสฺสาย วิหเรยฺยํ🤖 AI จับคู่
‘aparipūrassa kho ahaṁ sīlakkhandhassa pāripūriyā aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ.
‘I would honor and respect and rely on another ascetic or brahmin so as to complete the entire spectrum of ethics, if it were incomplete.

ปนาหํ ปสฺสามิ สเทวเก โลเก สมารเก สพฺรหฺมเก สสฺสมณพฺราหฺมณิยา
ปชาย สเทวมนุสฺสาย อญฺญํ สมณํ วา พฺราหฺมณํ วา อตฺตนา
สีลสมฺปนฺนตรํ ยมหํ สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย วิหเรยฺยํ🤖 AI จับคู่
Na kho panāhaṁ passāmi sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā attanā sīlasampannataraṁ, yamahaṁ sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ.
But I don’t see any other ascetic or brahmin in this world—with its gods, Māras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans—who is more accomplished than myself in ethics, who I should honor and respect and rely on.
อปริปูรสฺส โข เม ๑- ... สมาธิกฺขนฺธสฺส ... ป🤖 AI จับคู่
Aparipūrassa kho ahaṁ samādhikkhandhassa pāripūriyā aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ.
I would honor and respect and rely on another ascetic or brahmin so as to complete the entire spectrum of immersion, if it were incomplete.

But I don’t see any other ascetic or brahmin … who is more accomplished than myself in immersion …
ญฺญากฺขนฺธสฺส🤖 AI จับคู่
Aparipūrassa kho ahaṁ paññākkhandhassa pāripūriyā aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ.
I would honor and respect and rely on another ascetic or brahmin so as to complete the entrie spectrum of wisdom, if it were incomplete.

Aparipūrassa kho ahaṁ vimuttikkhandhassa pāripūriyā aññaṁ samaṇaṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ vā sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihareyyaṁ.
I would honor and respect and rely on another ascetic or brahmin so as to complete the entire spectrum of freedom, if it were incomplete.

โลเก สมารเก สพฺรหฺมเก สสฺสมณพฺราหฺมณิยา ปชาย สเทวมนุสฺสาย
อญฺญํ สมณํ วา พฺราหฺมณํ วา อตฺตนา วิมุตฺติสมฺปนฺนตรํ ยมหํ

‘Why don’t I honor and respect and rely on the same teaching to which I was awakened?’
อถโข ภิกฺขเว พฺรหฺมา สหมฺปติ มม เจตสา
เจโตปริวิตกฺกมญฺญาย เสยฺยถาปิ นาม พลวา ปุริโส สมฺมิญฺชิตํ
วา พาหํ ปสาเรยฺย ปสาริตํ วา พาหํ สมฺมิญฺเชยฺย เอวเมว
พฺรหฺมโลเก อนฺตรหิโต มม ปุรโต ปาตุรโหสิ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
Atha kho, bhikkhave, brahmā sahampati mama cetasā cetoparivitakkamaññāya—seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṁ vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya, pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ samiñjeyya; evamevaṁ—brahmaloke antarahito mama purato pāturahosi.
And then the divinity Sahampati, knowing my train of thought, vanished from the realm of divinity and appeared in front of me, as easily as a strong man would extend or contract his arm.

He arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his cupped palms toward me, and said:
เอวเมตํ ภควา เอวเมตํ สุคต🤖 AI จับคู่
‘evametaṁ, bhagavā, evametaṁ, sugata.
‘That’s so true, Blessed One! That’s so true, Holy One!
เยปิ เต ภนฺเต อเหสุํ
อตีตมทฺธานํ อรหนฺโต สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธา เตปิ ภควนฺโต ธมฺมํเยว
สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย วิหรึสุ🤖 AI จับคู่
Yepi te, bhante, ahesuṁ atītamaddhānaṁ arahanto sammāsambuddhā tepi bhagavanto dhammaṁyeva sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihariṁsu;
All the perfected ones, the fully awakened Buddhas who lived in the past honored and respected and relied on this same teaching.
เยปิ เต ภนฺเต ภวิสฺสนฺติ
อนาคตมทฺธานํ อรหนฺโต สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธา เตปิ ภควนฺโต ธมฺมํเยว
สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย วิหริสฺสนฺติ🤖 AI จับคู่
yepi te, bhante, bhavissanti anāgatamaddhānaṁ arahanto sammāsambuddhā tepi bhagavanto dhammaṁyeva sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya viharissanti;
All the perfected ones, the fully awakened Buddhas who will live in the future will honor and respect and rely on this same teaching.
ภควาปิ ภนฺเต เอตรหิ
อรหํ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺโธ ธมฺมํเยว สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย
วิหรตูติ🤖 AI จับคู่
bhagavāpi, bhante, etarahi arahaṁ sammāsambuddho dhammaṁyeva sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya viharatū’ti.
May the Blessed One, who is the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha at present, also honor and respect and rely on this same teaching.’
อิทมโวจ พฺรหฺมา สหมฺปติ อิทํ วตฺวา อถาปรํ เอตทโวจ🤖 AI จับคู่
Idamavoca brahmā sahampati.
That’s what the divinity Sahampati said.
เย จ อตีตา ๑- สมฺพุทฺธา🤖 AI จับคู่
‘Ye ca atītā sambuddhā,
‘All Buddhas, whether in the past,
เย จ พุทฺธา อนาคตา🤖 AI จับคู่
ye ca buddhā anāgatā;
the Buddhas of the future,
โย เจตรหิ สมฺพุทฺโธ🤖 AI จับคู่
Yo cetarahi sambuddho,
and the Buddha at present—
พหุนฺนํ โสกนาสโน🤖 AI จับคู่
bahūnaṁ sokanāsano.
destroyer of the sorrows of many—
สพฺเพ สทฺธมฺมครุโน🤖 AI จับคู่
Sabbe saddhammagaruno,
respecting the true teaching
วิหรึสุ ๒- วิหาติ จ🤖 AI จับคู่
vihaṁsu viharanti ca;
they did live, they do live,
อถาปิ วิหริสฺสนฺติ🤖 AI จับคู่
Athopi viharissanti,
and they also will live.
เอสา พุทฺธาน ธมฺมตา🤖 AI จับคู่
esā buddhāna dhammatā.
This is the nature of the Buddhas.
ตสฺมา หิ อตฺตกาเมน🤖 AI จับคู่
Tasmā hi attakāmena,
Therefore someone who desires self-knowledge,

มหตฺตมภิกงฺขตา🤖 AI จับคู่
mahattamabhikaṅkhatā;
and aspires to greatness themselves,

should respect the true teaching,
สรํ พุทฺธาน สาสนนฺติ ฯ🤖 AI จับคู่
saraṁ buddhāna sāsanan’ti.
remembering the instructions of the Buddhas.’
อิทมโวจ ภิกฺขเว พฺรหฺมา สหมฺปติ🤖 AI จับคู่
Idamavoca, bhikkhave, brahmā sahampati.
That’s what the divinity Sahampati said.

Then he bowed and respectfully circled me, keeping me on his right side, before vanishing right there.
อิธ ๓- ขฺวาหํ ภิกฺขเว
พฺรหฺมุโน อชฺเฌสนํ วิทิตฺวา อตฺตโน จ ปฏิรูปํ โยปายํ ธมฺโม
มยา อภิสมฺพุทฺโธ ตเมว ธมฺมํ สกฺกตฺวา ครุํ กตฺวา อุปนิสฺสาย

Atha khvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, brahmuno ca ajjhesanaṁ viditvā attano ca patirūpaṁ yvāyaṁ dhammo mayā abhisambuddho tameva dhammaṁ sakkatvā garuṁ katvā upanissāya vihāsiṁ.
Then, knowing the request of the Divinity and what was suitable for myself, I honored and respected and relied on the same teaching to which I was awakened.
ยโต จ โข ภิกฺขเว สงฺโฆปิ มหตฺเตน สมนฺนาคโต อถ
