มนุสฺสานํ เอตทโหสิ✎ ร่าง
Manussānaṁ etadahosi:
People thought,
อการกา อิเม สมณา
สกฺยปุตฺติยา น อิเมหิ กตํ ปาปนฺติเม สมณา สกฺยปุตฺติยาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“akārakā ime samaṇā sakyaputtiyā, nayimehi kataṁ, sapantime samaṇā sakyaputtiyā”ti.
“These ascetics who follow the Sakyan didn’t do it, it was not done by them, they swear it.”
เนว โส สทฺโท จิรํ อโหสิ สตฺตาหเมว สทฺโท อโหสิ
สตฺตาหสฺส อจฺจเยน อนฺตรธายิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Neva so saddo ciraṁ ahosi. Sattāhameva ahosi. Sattāhassa accayena antaradhāyi.
That rumor didn’t last long. It was seven days, then it vanished.
อถ โข สมฺพหุลา ภิกฺขู เยน
ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมึสุ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา
เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทึสุ ฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนา โข เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต

Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavato etadavocuṁ:
Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,
อจฺฉริยํ ภนฺเต อพฺภูตํ ภนฺเต✎ ร่าง
“Acchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ, bhante.
“It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing!

Yāva subhāsitañcidaṁ, bhante, bhagavatā:
How well said this was by the Buddha:
เนโส ภิกฺขเว สทฺโท จิรํ ภวิสฺสติ สตฺตาหสฺส

‘neso, bhikkhave, saddo ciraṁ bhavissati. Sattāhameva bhavissati. Sattāhassa accayena antaradhāyissatī’ti.
‘That rumor, mendicants, won’t last long. It will only be seven days, then it will vanish.’
อนฺตรหิโต ภนฺเต โส สทฺโทติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Antarahito so, bhante, saddo”ti.
That rumor has vanished, sir.”
อถ โข ภควา เอตมตฺถํ วิทิตฺวา ตายํ เวลายํ อิมํ อุทานํ อุทาเนสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:
Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

ตุทนฺติ วาจาย ชนา อสญฺญตา

“Tudanti vācāya janā asaññatā,
“People out of control stab with words,
เรหิ ๑- สงฺคามคตํว กุญฺชรํ✎ ร่าง
Sarehi saṅgāmagataṁva kuñjaraṁ;
like they stab a tusker in battle with darts.
สุตฺวาน วากฺยํ ผรุสํ อุทีริตํ✎ ร่าง
Sutvāna vākyaṁ pharusaṁ udīritaṁ,
When they hear a harsh word spoken,
อธิวาสเย ภิกฺขุ อทุฏฺฐจิตฺโตติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Adhivāsaye bhikkhu aduṭṭhacitto”ti.
a mendicant should endure with no anger in heart.”
