Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.

เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ
เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเม ฯ✎ ร่าง
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
อถ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท
สายณฺหสมยํ ปฏิสลฺลานา วุฏฺฐิโต เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ
อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิ ฯ เอกมนฺตํ
นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmā ānando sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Ānanda came out of retreat and went to the Buddha. He bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
อจฺฉริยํ ภนฺเต
อพฺภูตํ ภนฺเต✎ ร่าง
“acchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ, bhante.
“It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing!
ยาว อปฺปายุกา หิ ภนฺเต ภควโต มาตา อโหสิ
สตฺตาหชาเต ภควติ ภควโต มาตา กาลมกาสิ ตุสิตํ กายํ
อุปปชฺชตีติ ฯ เอวเมตํ อานนฺท✎ ร่าง
Yāva appāyukā hi, bhante, bhagavato mātā ahosi, sattāhajāte bhagavati bhagavato mātā kālamakāsi, tusitaṁ kāyaṁ upapajjī”ti.
How short-lived was the Blessed One’s mother! For seven days after the Blessed One was born, his mother passed away and was reborn in the host of joyful gods.”
เอวเมตํ ๒- อานนฺท อปฺปายุกา
หิ อานนฺท โพธิสตฺตมาตโร โหนฺติ✎ ร่าง
“Evametaṁ, ānanda, appāyukā hi, ānanda, bodhisattamātaro honti.
“That’s so true, Ānanda! For the mothers of beings intent of awakening are short-lived.
สตฺตาหชาเตสุ โพธิสตฺเตสุ
โพธิสตฺตมาตโร กาลํ กโรนฺติ ตุสิตํ กายํ อุปปชฺชนฺตีติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sattāhajātesu bodhisattesu bodhisattamātaro kālaṁ karonti, tusitaṁ kāyaṁ upapajjantī”ti.
Seven days after the beings intent on awakening are born, their mothers pass away and are reborn in the host of joyful gods.”
อถ
โข ภควา เอตมตฺถํ วิทิตฺวา ตายํ เวลายํ อิมํ อุทานํ อุทาเนสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:
Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
เย เกจิ ภูตา ภวิสฺสนฺติ เย จาปิ✎ ร่าง
“Ye keci bhūtā bhavissanti ye vāpi,
“Whether born or to be born,
สพฺเพ คมิสฺสนฺติ ปหาย เทหํ✎ ร่าง
Sabbe gamissanti pahāya dehaṁ;
all depart, leaving the body behind.
ตํ สพฺพชานึ กุสโล วิทิตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Taṁ sabbajāniṁ kusalo viditvā,
The skillful, understanding that all is lost,
อาตาปิโย พฺรหฺมจริยํ จเรยฺยาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ātāpiyo brahmacariyaṁ careyyā”ti.
would keenly practice the spiritual life.”
