Pheṇūpamaṁ kāyamimaṁ viditvā,
Knowing this body’s like foam,
มรีจิธมฺมํ อภิสมฺพุธาโน✎ ร่าง
Marīcidhammaṁ abhisambudhāno;
realizing it’s all just a mirage,
เฉตฺวาน มารสฺส ปปุปฺผกานิ✎ ร่าง
Chetvāna mārassa papupphakāni,
and cutting off Māra’s blossoming,
อทสฺสนํ มจฺจุราชสฺส คจฺเฉ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Adassanaṁ maccurājassa gacche.
vanish from the King of Death.
ปุปฺผานิ เหว ปจินนฺตํ✎ ร่าง
Pupphāni heva pacinantaṁ,
As a mighty flood sweeps off a sleeping village,
พฺยาสตฺตมนสํ นรํ✎ ร่าง
byāsattamanasaṁ naraṁ;
death steals away a man
สุตฺตํ คามํ มโหโฆว✎ ร่าง
Suttaṁ gāmaṁ mahoghova,
even as he gathers flowers,
มจฺจุ อาทาย คจฺฉติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
maccu ādāya gacchati.
his mind caught up in them.

Pupphāni heva pacinantaṁ,
The terminator gains control of the man
พฺยาสตฺตมนสํ นรํ✎ ร่าง
byāsattamanasaṁ naraṁ;
who has not had his fill of pleasures,
อติตฺตํ เยว กาเมสุ✎ ร่าง
Atittaññeva kāmesu,
even as he gathers flowers,
อนฺตโก กุรุเต วสํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
antako kurute vasaṁ.
his mind caught up in them.

ยถาปิ ภมโร ปุปฺผํ✎ ร่าง
Yathāpi bhamaro pupphaṁ,
A bee takes the nectar
วณฺณวนฺตํ ๑- อเหฐยํ✎ ร่าง
vaṇṇagandhamaheṭhayaṁ;
and moves on, doing no damage
ปเลติ รสมาทาย✎ ร่าง
Paleti rasamādāya,
to the flower’s beauty and fragrance;
เอวํ คาเม มุนี จเร ฯ✎ ร่าง
evaṁ gāme munī care.
and that’s how a sage should walk in the village.
น ปเรสํ วิโลมานิ✎ ร่าง
Na paresaṁ vilomāni,
Don’t find fault with others,
น ปเรสํ กตากตํ✎ ร่าง
na paresaṁ katākataṁ;
with what they’ve done or left undone.
อตฺตโน ว อเวกฺเขยฺย✎ ร่าง
Attanova avekkheyya,
You should only watch yourself,
กตานิ อกตานิ จ ฯ✎ ร่าง
katāni akatāni ca.
what you’ve done or left undone.

ยถาปิ รุจิรํ ปุปฺผํ✎ ร่าง
Yathāpi ruciraṁ pupphaṁ,
Just like a glorious flower
วณฺณวนฺตํ อคนฺธกํ✎ ร่าง
vaṇṇavantaṁ agandhakaṁ;
that’s colorful but lacks fragrance;
เอวํ สุภาสิตา วาจา✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ subhāsitā vācā,
eloquent speech is fruitless
อผลา โหติ อกุพฺพโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
aphalā hoti akubbato.
for one who does not act on it.
ยถาปิ รุจิรํ ปุปฺผํ✎ ร่าง
Yathāpi ruciraṁ pupphaṁ,
Just like a glorious flower

Yathāpi puppharāsimhā,
Just as one would create many garlands

Na candanaṁ tagaramallikā vā;
nor sandalwood, pinwheel, or jasmine;
สตญฺจ คนฺโธ ปฏิวาตเมติ✎ ร่าง
Satañca gandho paṭivātameti,
but the fragrance of the good spreads upwind;
สพฺพา ทิสา สปฺปุริโส ปวายติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sabbā disā sappuriso pavāyati.
a true person’s virtue spreads in every direction.
จนฺทนํ ตครํ วาปิ✎ ร่าง
Candanaṁ tagaraṁ vāpi,
Among all the fragrances—
อุปฺปลํ อถ วสฺสิกี✎ ร่าง
uppalaṁ atha vassikī;
sandalwood or pinwheel
เอเตสํ คนฺธชาตานํ✎ ร่าง
Etesaṁ gandhajātānaṁ,
or lotus or jasmine—
สีลคนฺโธ อนุตฺตโร ฯ✎ ร่าง
sīlagandho anuttaro.
the fragrance of virtue is supreme.

Appamatto ayaṁ gandho,
Faint is the fragrance

yāyaṁ tagaracandanī;
of sandal or pinwheel;
โย จ สีลวตํ คนฺโธ✎ ร่าง
Yo ca sīlavataṁ gandho,
but the fragrance of the virtuous
วาติ เทเวสุ อุตฺตโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
vāti devesu uttamo.
floats to the highest gods.

เตสํ สมฺปนฺนสีลานํ✎ ร่าง
Tesaṁ sampannasīlānaṁ,
For those accomplished in ethics,
อปฺปมาทวิหารินํ✎ ร่าง
appamādavihārinaṁ;
meditating diligently,
สมฺมทญฺญา วิมุตฺตานํ✎ ร่าง
Sammadaññāvimuttānaṁ,
freed through the highest knowledge,
มาโร มคฺคํ น วินฺทติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
māro maggaṁ na vindati.
Māra cannot find their path.
ยถา สงฺการธานสฺมึ✎ ร่าง
Yathā saṅkāradhānasmiṁ,
From a heap of trash
อุชฺฌิตสฺมึ มหาปเถ✎ ร่าง
ujjhitasmiṁ mahāpathe;
discarded on the highway,
ปทุมํ ตตฺถ ชาเยถ✎ ร่าง
Padumaṁ tattha jāyetha,
a lotus might blossom,
สุจิคนฺธํ มโนรมํ✎ ร่าง
sucigandhaṁ manoramaṁ.
fragrant and delightful.
เอวํ สงฺการภูเตสุ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ saṅkārabhūtesu,
So too, among those thought of as trash,
อนฺธภูเต ปุถุชฺชเน✎ ร่าง
andhabhūte puthujjane;
a disciple of the perfect Buddha
อติโรจติ ปญฺญาย✎ ร่าง
Atirocati paññāya,
outshines with their wisdom
สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธสาวโก ฯ✎ ร่าง
sammāsambuddhasāvako.
