Dīghā jāgarato ratti,
Long is the night for the wakeful;

ทีฆํ สนฺตสฺส โยชนํ✎ ร่าง
dīghaṁ santassa yojanaṁ;
long is the league for the weary;
ทีโฆ พาลาน สํสาโร✎ ร่าง
Dīgho bālāna saṁsāro,
long transmigrate the fools
สทฺธมฺมํ อวิชานตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
saddhammaṁ avijānataṁ.
who don’t understand the true teaching.

จรญฺเจ นาธิคจฺเฉยฺย✎ ร่าง
Carañce nādhigaccheyya,
If while wandering you find no partner
เสยฺยํ สทิสมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
Seyyaṁ sadisamattano;
equal or better than yourself,
เอกจริยํ ทฬฺหํ กยิรา✎ ร่าง
Ekacariyaṁ daḷhaṁ kayirā,
then firmly resolve to wander alone—
นตฺถิ พาเล สหายตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Natthi bāle sahāyatā.
there’s no fellowship with fools.
ปุตฺตา มตฺถิ ธนมตฺถิ✎ ร่าง
Puttā matthi dhanaṁ matthi,
“Sons are mine, wealth is mine”—
อิติ พาโล วิหญฺญติ✎ ร่าง
iti bālo vihaññati;
thus the fool frets.
อตฺตา หิ อตฺตโน นตฺถิ✎ ร่าง
Attā hi attano natthi,
For even your self is not your own,
กุโต ปุตฺตา กุโต ธนํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kuto puttā kuto dhanaṁ.
let alone your sons or wealth.

Gaṇṭhibhedakacoravatthu
โย พาโล มญฺญตี พาลฺยํ✎ ร่าง
Yo bālo maññati bālyaṁ,
The fool who thinks they’re a fool
ปณฺฑิโต วาปิ เตน โส✎ ร่าง
paṇḍito vāpi tena so;
is wise at least to that extent.
พาโล จ ปณฺฑิตมานี✎ ร่าง
Bālo ca paṇḍitamānī,
But the true fool is said to be one
ส เว พาโลติ วุจฺจติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
sa ve “bālo”ti vuccati.
who imagines that they are wise.
ยาวชีวมฺปิ เจ พาโล✎ ร่าง
Yāvajīvampi ce bālo,
Though a fool attends to the wise
ปณฺฑิตํ ปยิรุปาสติ✎ ร่าง
paṇḍitaṁ payirupāsati;
even for the rest of their life,
น โส ธมฺมํ วิชานาติ✎ ร่าง
Na so dhammaṁ vijānāti,
they still don’t understand the teaching,
ทพฺพี สูปรสํ ยถา ฯ✎ ร่าง
dabbī sūparasaṁ yathā.
like a spoon the taste of the soup.

Tiṁsapāveyyakabhikkhuvatthu
มุหุตฺตมปิ เจ วิญฺญู✎ ร่าง
Muhuttamapi ce viññū,
If a clever person attends to the wise
ปณฺฑิตํ ปยิรุปาสติ✎ ร่าง
paṇḍitaṁ payirupāsati;
even just for an hour or so,
ขิปฺปํ ธมฺมํ วิชานาติ✎ ร่าง
Khippaṁ dhammaṁ vijānāti,
they swiftly understand the teaching,
ชิวฺหา สูปรสํ ยถา ฯ✎ ร่าง
jivhā sūparasaṁ yathā.
like a tongue the taste of the soup.

Caranti bālā dummedhā,
Fools and simpletons behave

like their own worst enemies,

Karontā pāpakaṁ kammaṁ,
doing wicked deeds
ยํ โหติ กฏุกปฺผลํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
yaṁ hoti kaṭukapphalaṁ.
that ripen as bitter fruit.
น ตํ กมฺมํ กตํ สาธุ✎ ร่าง
Na taṁ kammaṁ kataṁ sādhu,
It’s not good to do a deed
ยํ กตฺวา อนุตปฺปติ✎ ร่าง
yaṁ katvā anutappati;
that plagues you later on,
ยสฺส อสฺสุมุโข โรทํ✎ ร่าง
Yassa assumukho rodaṁ,
for which you weep and wail,
วิปากํ ปฏิเสวติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
vipākaṁ paṭisevati.
as its effect stays with you.
ตญฺจ กมฺมํ กตํ สาธุ✎ ร่าง
Tañca kammaṁ kataṁ sādhu,
It is good to do a deed

ยํ กตฺวา นานุตปฺปติ✎ ร่าง
yaṁ katvā nānutappati;
that doesn’t plague you later on,
ยสฺส ปตีโต สุมโน✎ ร่าง

that gladdens and cheers,
วิปากํ ปฏิเสวติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
vipākaṁ paṭisevati.
as its effect stays with you.

มธุวา มญฺญตี พาโล✎ ร่าง
Madhuṁvā maññati bālo,
The fool imagines that evil is sweet,

yāva pāpaṁ na paccati;
so long as it has not yet ripened.
ยทา จ ปจฺจติ ปาปํ✎ ร่าง

But as soon as that evil ripens,
อถ (พาโล) ทุกฺขํ นิคจฺฉติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
atha dukkhaṁ nigacchati.
they fall into suffering.
มาเส มาเส กุสคฺเคน✎ ร่าง
Māse māse kusaggena,
Month after month a fool may eat
พาโล ภุญฺเชถ โภชนํ✎ ร่าง
bālo bhuñjeyya bhojanaṁ;
food from a grass-blade’s tip;
น โส สงฺขาตธมฺมานํ✎ ร่าง
Na so saṅkhātadhammānaṁ,
but they’ll never be worth a sixteenth part
กลํ อคฺฆติ โสฬสึ ฯ✎ ร่าง
kalaṁ agghati soḷasiṁ.
of one who has appraised the teaching.
น หิ ปาปํ กตํ กมฺมํ✎ ร่าง
Na hi pāpaṁ kataṁ kammaṁ,
For a wicked deed that has been done
สชฺชุขีรํว มุจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Sajjukhīraṁva muccati;
does not curdle quickly like milk.
ฑหนฺตํ พาลมเนฺวติ✎ ร่าง
Ḍahantaṁ bālamanveti,
Smoldering, it follows the fool,
ภสฺมาจฺฉนฺโนว ปาวโก ฯ✎ ร่าง
Bhasmacchannova pāvako.
like a fire smothered over with ash.
ยาวเทว อนตฺถาย✎ ร่าง
Yāvadeva anatthāya,
Whatever fame a fool may get,
ญตฺตํ พาลสฺส ชายติ✎ ร่าง
ñattaṁ bālassa jāyati;
it only gives rise to harm.
หนฺติ พาลสฺส สุกฺกํสํ✎ ร่าง
Hanti bālassa sukkaṁsaṁ,
Whatever good features they have it ruins,
มุทฺธํ อสฺส วิปาตยํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
muddhamassa vipātayaṁ.
and blows their head into bits.
อสนฺตํ ภาวมิจฺเฉยฺย✎ ร่าง
Asantaṁ bhāvanamiccheyya,
They’d seek the esteem that they lack,
ปุเรกฺขารญฺจ ภิกฺขุสุ✎ ร่าง
Purekkhārañca bhikkhusu;
and status among the mendicants;
อาวาเสสุ จ อิสฺสริยํ✎ ร่าง
Āvāsesu ca issariyaṁ,
authority over monasteries,
ปูชา ปรกุเลสุ จ✎ ร่าง
Pūjaṁ parakulesu ca.
and honor among other families.
มเมว กตมญฺญนฺตุ✎ ร่าง
Mameva kata maññantu,
“Let both layfolk and renunciants think
คิหี ปพฺพชิตา อุโภ✎ ร่าง
gihī pabbajitā ubho;
the work was done by me alone.
มเมว อติวสา อสฺสุ✎ ร่าง
Mamevātivasā assu,
In anything at all that’s to be done,
กิจฺจากิจฺเจสุ กิสฺมิจิ✎ ร่าง
kiccākiccesu kismici;
let them fall under my sway alone.”
อิติ พาลสฺส สงฺกปฺโป✎ ร่าง
Iti bālassa saṅkappo,
So thinks the fool,
อิสฺสา มาโน จ วฑฺฒติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
icchā māno ca vaḍḍhati.
their greed and pride only growing.

อญฺญา หิ ลาภูปนิสา✎ ร่าง
Aññā hi lābhūpanisā,
For the means to profit and the path to quenching
อญฺญา นิพฺพานคามินี✎ ร่าง
aññā nibbānagāminī;
are two quite different things.
เอวเมตํ อภิญฺญาย✎ ร่าง
Evametaṁ abhiññāya,
A mendicant disciple of the Buddha,
ภิกฺขุ พุทฺธสฺส สาวโก✎ ร่าง
bhikkhu buddhassa sāvako;
understanding what this really means,
สกฺการํ นาภินนฺเทยฺย✎ ร่าง
Sakkāraṁ nābhinandeyya,
would never delight in honors,
วิเวกมนุพฺรูหเย ฯ✎ ร่าง
vivekamanubrūhaye.
but rather would foster seclusion.
พาลวคฺโค ปญฺจโม ฯ✎ ร่าง
Bālavaggo pañcamo.
