Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.

เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ
เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเม ฯ✎ ร่าง
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
อถ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท
เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา
เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.
Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควนฺตํ

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
ยาวกีวญฺจ ภนฺเต ตถาคตา โลเก นุปฺปชฺชนฺติ อรหนฺโต

“Yāvakīvañca, bhante, tathāgatā loke nuppajjanti arahanto sammāsambuddhā tāva aññatitthiyā paribbājakā sakkatā honti garukatā mānitā pūjitā apacitā lābhino cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṁ.
“Sir, so long as the Realized Ones, the perfected ones, the fully awakened Buddhas do not arise in the world, the wanderers of other religions are honored, respected, revered, venerated, and esteemed. And they receive robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick.

มานิโต ปูชิโต อปจิโต ลาภี จีวรปิณฺฑปาตเสนาสนคิลาน-
ปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขารานํ ภิกฺขุสงฺโฆ จาติ ฯ

Bhagavāyeva dāni, bhante, sakkato hoti garukato mānito pūjito apacito lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṁ, bhikkhusaṅgho cā”ti.
Now only the Buddha is honored, respected, revered, venerated, and esteemed. And he receives robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick.”
เอวเมตํ ๑- อานนฺท ยาวกีวญฺจ
อานนฺท ตถาคตา โลเก นุปฺปชฺชนฺติ อรหนฺโต สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธา

“That’s so true, Ānanda. So long as the Realized Ones do not arise in the world, the wanderers of other religions are honored, respected, revered, venerated, and esteemed. And they receive robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick.

เจวทานิ สกฺกโต โหติ ครุกโต มานิโต ปูชิโต อปจิโต ลาภี
จีวรปิณฺฑปาตเสนาสนคิลานปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขารานํ ภิกฺขุสงฺโฆ
จาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Tathāgatova dāni sakkato hoti garukato mānito pūjito apacito lābhī cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānaṁ, bhikkhusaṅgho cā”ti.
Now only the Realized One is honored, respected, revered, venerated, and esteemed. And he receives robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. And so does the mendicant Saṅgha.”
อถ โข ภควา เอตมตฺถํ วิทิตฺวา ตายํ เวลายํ อิมํ อุทานํ อุทาเนสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:
Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

โอภาสติ ๑- ตาว โส กิมิ✎ ร่าง
“Obhāsati tāva so kimi,
“The glow-worm shines so long

ยาว น อุณฺณติ ๒- ปภงฺกโร✎ ร่าง
Yāva na unnamate pabhaṅkaro;
as the beacon of the sun does not rise.
วิโรจนมฺหิ ๓- อุคฺคเต✎ ร่าง
Sa verocanamhi uggate,
But when the sun has come up,
หตปฺปโภ โหติ น จาปิ ภาสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Hatappabho hoti na cāpi bhāsati.
that light is erased and shines no more.
เอวํ โอภาสิตเมว ติตฺถิยานํ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ obhāsitameva takkikānaṁ,
So too the sophists shine bright
ยาว สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺธา โลเก นุปฺปชฺชนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Yāva sammāsambuddhā loke nuppajjanti;
so long as the Buddhas don’t arise in the world.
น ตกฺกิกา สุชฺฌนฺติ น จาปิ สาวกา✎ ร่าง
Na takkikā sujjhanti na cāpi sāvakā,
The sophists are not purified, nor are their disciples.
ทุทฺทิฏฺฐี น ทุกฺขา ปมุญฺจเรติ ๕- ฯ✎ ร่าง
Duddiṭṭhī na dukkhā pamuccare”ti.
Having bad views, they are not freed from suffering.”

tayo titthiyā subhūti;
คณิกา อุปาติ นวโม✎ ร่าง
Gaṇikā upāti navamo,
