Nidhīnaṁva pavattāraṁ,
Regard one who sees your faults

as a guide to a hidden treasure.

Niggayhavādiṁ medhāviṁ,
Stay close to one so wise and astute
ตาทิสํ ปณฺฑิตํ ภเช✎ ร่าง
tādisaṁ paṇḍitaṁ bhaje;
who corrects you when you need it.
ตาทิสํ ภชมานสฺส✎ ร่าง
Tādisaṁ bhajamānassa,
Sticking close to such an impartial person,
เสยฺโย โหติ น ปาปิโย ฯ✎ ร่าง
seyyo hoti na pāpiyo.
things get better, not worse.

and disliked by the bad.

Na bhaje pāpake mitte,
Don’t mix with bad friends,
น ภเช ปุริสาธเม✎ ร่าง
na bhaje purisādhame;
nor with the worst of men.
ภเชถ มิตฺเต กลฺยาเณ✎ ร่าง
Bhajetha mitte kalyāṇe,
Mix with spiritual friends,
ภเชถ ปุริสุตฺตเม ฯ✎ ร่าง
bhajetha purisuttame.
and with the best of men.

Ariyappavedite dhamme,
An astute person always delights in the teaching

proclaimed by the Noble One.
อุทกญฺหิ นยนฺติ เนตฺติกา✎ ร่าง
Udakañhi nayanti nettikā,
Irrigators guide water,
อุสุการา นมยนฺติ เตชนํ✎ ร่าง
Usukārā namayanti tejanaṁ;
fletchers straighten arrows,
ทารุํ นมยนฺติ ตจฺฉกา✎ ร่าง
Dāruṁ namayanti tacchakā,
carpenters carve timber,
อตฺตานํ ทมยนฺติ ปณฺฑิตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Attānaṁ damayanti paṇḍitā.
the astute tame themselves.

Lakuṇḍakabhaddiyattheravatthu
เสโล ยถา เอกฆโน✎ ร่าง
Selo yathā ekaghano,
As the wind cannot stir
วาเตน น สมีรติ✎ ร่าง
vātena na samīrati;
a solid mass of rock,
เอวํ นินฺทาปสํสาสุ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ nindāpasaṁsāsu,
so too blame and praise
น สมฺมิญฺชนฺติ ๑- ปณฺฑิตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
na samiñjanti paṇḍitā.
do not affect the wise.
ยถาปิ รหโท คมฺภีโร✎ ร่าง
Yathāpi rahado gambhīro,
Like a deep lake,
วิปฺปสนฺโน อนาวิโล✎ ร่าง
vippasanno anāvilo;
clear and unclouded,
เอวํ ธมฺมานิ สุตฺวาน✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ dhammāni sutvāna,
so clear are the astute
วิปฺปสีทนฺติ ปณฺฑิตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
vippasīdanti paṇḍitā.
when they hear the teachings.
สพฺพตฺถ เว สปฺปุริสา วชนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Sabbattha ve sappurisā cajanti,
True persons give up everything,

น กามกามา ลปยนฺติ สนฺโต✎ ร่าง
Na kāmakāmā lapayanti santo;
they don’t cajole for the things they desire.
สุเขน ผุฏฺฐา อถวา ทุกฺเขน✎ ร่าง
Sukhena phuṭṭhā atha vā dukhena,
Though touched by sadness or happiness,
น อุจฺจาวจํ ปณฺฑิตา ทสฺสยนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Na uccāvacaṁ paṇḍitā dassayanti.
the astute appear neither depressed nor elated.
น อตฺตเหตุ น ปรสฺส เหตุ✎ ร่าง
Na attahetu na parassa hetu,
Never wish for success by unjust means,

น ปุตฺตมิจฺเฉ น ธนํ น รฏฺฐํ✎ ร่าง
Na puttamicche na dhanaṁ na raṭṭhaṁ;
for your own sake or that of another,
น อิจฺเฉยฺย อธมฺเมน สมิทฺธิมตฺตโน✎ ร่าง
Na iccheyya adhammena samiddhimattano,
desiring children, wealth, or nation;
ส สีลวา ปญฺญวา ธมฺมิโก สิยา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sa sīlavā paññavā dhammiko siyā.
rather, be virtuous, wise, and just.

Appakā te manussesu,
Few are those among humans
เย ชนา ปารคามิโน✎ ร่าง
ye janā pāragāmino;
who cross to the far shore.

Athāyaṁ itarā pajā,
The rest just run around
ตีรเมวานุธาวติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
tīramevānudhāvati.
on the near shore.
เย จ โข สมฺมทกฺขาเต✎ ร่าง
Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte,
When the teaching is well explained,
ธมฺเม ธมฺมานุวตฺติโน✎ ร่าง
dhamme dhammānuvattino;
those who practice accordingly
เต ชนา ปารเมสฺสนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Te janā pāramessanti,
will cross over
มจฺจุเธยฺยํ สุทุตฺตรํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ.
Death’s dominion so hard to pass.

Pañcasataāgantukabhikkhuvatthu
กณฺหํ ธมฺมํ วิปฺปหาย✎ ร่าง
Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya,
Rid of dark qualities,
สุกฺกํ ภาเวถ ปณฺฑิโต✎ ร่าง
Sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito;
an astute person should develop the bright.
โอกา อโนกมาคมฺม✎ ร่าง
Okā anokamāgamma,
Leaving home behind
วิเวเก ยตฺถ ทูรมํ✎ ร่าง
Viveke yattha dūramaṁ.
for the seclusion so hard to enjoy,
ตตฺราภิรติมิจฺเฉยฺย✎ ร่าง
Tatrābhiratimiccheyya,
try to find satisfaction there,

Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu,
Those whose minds are rightly developed
สมฺมา จิตฺตํ สุภาวิตํ✎ ร่าง
sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ;
in the awakening factors;
อาทานปฏินิสฺสคฺเค✎ ร่าง
Ādānapaṭinissagge,
who, letting go of attachments,
อนุปาทาย เย รตา✎ ร่าง
anupādāya ye ratā;
delight in not grasping:
ขีณาสวา ชุติมนฺโต✎ ร่าง
Khīṇāsavā jutimanto,
with defilements ended, brilliant,
เต โลเก ปรินิพฺพุตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
te loke parinibbutā.
they are quenched in this world.
