อถ โข ภควา มคฺคา โอกฺกมฺม เยน อญฺญตรํ
รุกฺขมูลํ เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ปญฺญตฺเต อาสเน นิสีทิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā maggā okkamma yena rukkhamūlaṁ tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.
And then the Buddha left the road, went to the root of a tree, and sat down on the seat spread out.
นิสชฺช โข ภควา อายสฺมนฺตํ อานนฺทํ อามนฺเตสิ✎ ร่าง
Nisajja kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ āmantesi:
When he was seated he said to Venerable Ānanda:
อิงฺฆ เม ตฺวํ
อานนฺท เอตสฺมา อุทปานา ปานียํ อาหราติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“iṅgha me tvaṁ, ānanda, etamhā udapānā pānīyaṁ āharā”ti.
“Go on then, Ānanda, fetch me some water from that well.”
เอวํ วุตฺเต
อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
When he said this, Venerable Ānanda said to the Buddha,

“Just now, sir, the brahmins and householders of Thūṇa filled the well with grass and hay right to the top, thinking,

มุณฺฑกา สมณกา ปานียํ อทํสูติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
‘mā te muṇḍakā samaṇakā pānīyaṁ apaṁsū’”ti.
‘Don’t let these shavelings, these fake ascetics drink the water.’”

and for a third time, the Buddha said to Ānanda:
อิงฺฆ เม ตฺวํ อานนฺท เอตสฺมา อุทปานา
ปานียํ อาหราติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“iṅgha me tvaṁ, ānanda, etamhā udapānā pānīyaṁ āharā”ti.
“Go on then, Ānanda, fetch me some water from that well.”
เอวํ ภนฺเตติ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควโต
ปฏิสฺสุตฺวา ปตฺตํ คเหตฺวา เยน โส อุทปาโน เตนุปสงฺกมิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā ānando bhagavato paṭissutvā pattaṁ gahetvā yena so udapāno tenupasaṅkami.
“Yes, sir,” replied Ānanda. Taking his bowl he went to the well.
อถ โข อุทปาโน อายสฺมนฺเต อานนฺเท อุปสงฺกมนฺเต สพฺพนฺตํ
ติณญฺจ ภุสญฺจ มุขโต โอวมิตฺวา อจฺฉสฺส อุทกสฺส อนาวิลสฺส
วิปฺปสนฺนสฺส ยาว มุขโต ปูริโต วิสนฺทนฺโต มญฺเญ อฏฺฐาสิ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho so udapāno āyasmante ānande upasaṅkamante sabbaṁ taṁ tiṇañca bhusañca mukhato ovamitvā acchassa udakassa anāvilassa vippasannassa yāva mukhato pūrito vissandanto maññe aṭṭhāsi.
As he approached the well, all the grass and hay erupted out of the well-mouth. The water stood transparent, unclouded, and clear right up to the top, seeming to overflow.
อถ โข อายสฺมโต อานนฺทสฺส เอตทโหสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmato ānandassa etadahosi:
Then Venerable Ānanda thought,

อพฺภูตํ วต โภ ตถาคตสฺส มหิทฺธิกตา มหานุภาวกตา✎ ร่าง
“acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho, tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.
“Oh lord, how incredible, how amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might!
อยญฺหิ
โส อุทปาโน มยิ อุปสงฺกมนฺเต สพฺพนฺตํ ติณญฺจ ภุสญฺจ มุขโต
โอวมิตฺวา อจฺฉสฺส อุทกสฺส อนาวิลสฺส วิปฺปสนฺนสฺส ยาว มุขโต
ปูริโต วิสนฺทนฺโต มญฺเญ ฐิโตติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Ayañhi so udapāno mayi upasaṅkamante sabbaṁ taṁ tiṇañca bhusañca mukhato ovamitvā acchassa udakassa anāvilassa vippasannassa yāva mukhato pūrito vissandanto maññe ṭhito”ti.

ปตฺเตน ปานียํ อาทาย
เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Pattena pānīyaṁ ādāya yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Gathering a bowl of drinking water he went back to the Buddha, and said to him,
อจฺฉริยํ ภนฺเต อพฺภูตํ ภนฺเต ตถาคตสฺส มหิทฺธิกตา
มหานุภาวกตา✎ ร่าง
“acchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ, bhante, tathāgatassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā.
“It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing! The Realized One has such psychic power and might!
อยญฺหิ โส ภนฺเต อุทปาโน มยิ อุปสงฺกมนฺเต
สพฺพนฺตํ ติณญฺจ ภุสญฺจ มุขโต โอวมิตฺวา อจฺฉสฺส อุทกสฺส

ปีวตุ ภควา ปานียํ ปีวตุ สุคโต ปานียนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Pivatu bhagavā pānīyaṁ, pivatu sugato pānīyan”ti.
Drink the water, Blessed One! Drink the water, Holy One!”

ภควา เอตมตฺถํ วิทิตฺวา ตายํ เวลายํ อิมํ อุทานํ อุทาเนสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:
Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
กึ กยิรา อุทปาเนน✎ ร่าง
“Kiṁ kayirā udapānena,
“What difference would a well make

if water is there all the time?

Kissa pariyesanaṁ care”ti.
