เอวมฺเม สุตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard.
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา โกสเลสุ อทฺธาน-
มคฺคปฏิปนฺโน โหติ อายสฺมตา นาคสมาเลน ปจฺฉาสมเณน ฯ✎ ร่าง
ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosalesu addhānamaggappaṭipanno hoti āyasmatā nāgasamālena pacchāsamaṇena.
At one time the Buddha was traveling along a road in the Kosalan lands with Venerable Nāgasamāla as his second monk.
อทฺทสา โข อายสฺมา นาคสมาโล อนฺตรามคฺเค ทฺวิธาปถํ✎ ร่าง
Addasā kho āyasmā nāgasamālo antarāmagge dvidhāpathaṁ.
Nāgasamāla saw a fork in the road
ทิสฺวาน ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Disvāna bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
and said to the Buddha,
อยํ ภนฺเต ภควา ปนฺโถ✎ ร่าง
“ayaṁ, bhante, bhagavā pantho;
“Sir, this is the road,
อิมินา
คจฺฉามาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
iminā gacchāmā”ti.
let us go this way.”
เอวํ วุตฺเต ภควา อายสฺมนฺตํ นาคสมาลํ
เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā āyasmantaṁ nāgasamālaṁ etadavoca:
But when he said this the Buddha responded,
อยํ นาคสมาล ปนฺโถ✎ ร่าง
“ayaṁ, nāgasamāla, pantho;
“Nāgasamāla, this is the road,
อิมินา คจฺฉามาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
iminā gacchāmā”ti.
let us go this way.”
ทุติยมฺปิ โข อายสฺมา นาคสมาโล ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ
อยํ ภนฺเต ภควา ปนฺโถ อิมินา คจฺฉามาติ ฯ ทุติยมฺปิ โข ภควา
อายสฺมนฺตํ นาคสมาลํ เอตทโวจ อยํ นาคสมาล ปนฺโถ อิมินา

tatiyampi kho āyasmā nāgasamālo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
and a third time Nāgasamāla said to the Buddha,
อยํ ภนฺเต ภควา ปนฺโถ✎ ร่าง
“ayaṁ, bhante, bhagavā pantho;
“Sir, this is the road,
อิมินา คจฺฉามาติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
iminā gacchāmā”ti.
let us go this way.”
ตติยมฺปิ โข ภควา
อายสฺมนฺตํ นาคสมาลํ เอตทโวจ✎ ร่าง
Tatiyampi kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ nāgasamālaṁ etadavoca:
And for a third time the Buddha responded,
อยํ นาคสมาล ปนฺโถ✎ ร่าง
“ayaṁ, nāgasamāla, pantho;
“Nāgasamāla, this is the road,
อิมินา

อถ โข อายสฺมา นาคสมาโล ภควโต ปตฺตจีวรํ
ตตฺเถว ฉมายํ นิกฺขิปิตฺวา ปกฺกามิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmā nāgasamālo bhagavato pattacīvaraṁ tattheva chamāyaṁ nikkhipitvā pakkāmi:
Then Nāgasamāla put the Buddha’s bowl and robes down on the ground right there and left, saying,
อิทํ ภนฺเต ภควา
ปตฺตจีวรนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“idaṁ, bhante, bhagavato pattacīvaran”ti.
“Sir, here are your bowl and robes.”
อถ โข อายสฺมโต นาคสมาลสฺส เตน ปนฺเถน
คจฺฉนฺตสฺส อนฺตรามคฺเค โจรา นิกฺขมิตฺวา หตฺเถหิ วา ปาเทหิ วา
อาโกเฏสุํ ปตฺตญฺจ ภินฺทึสุ สงฺฆาฏิญฺจ วิปฺผาเลสุํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho āyasmato nāgasamālassa tena panthena gacchantassa antarāmagge corā nikkhamitvā hatthehi ca pādehi ca ākoṭesuṁ pattañca bhindiṁsu saṅghāṭiñca vipphālesuṁ.
Then as Nāgasamāla was going down that road, he was set upon by bandits who struck him with fists and feet, broke his bowl, and tore up his outer robe.

Atha kho āyasmā nāgasamālo bhinnena pattena vipphālitāya saṅghāṭiyā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.
Then Nāgasamāla—with his bowl broken and his outer robe torn—went to the Buddha and told him what had happened.
เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา นาคสมาโล

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā nāgasamālo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
อิธ มยฺหํ ภนฺเต เตน ปนฺเถน คจฺฉนฺตสฺส อนฺตรามคฺเค
โจรา นิกฺขมิตฺวา หตฺเถหิ จ ปาเทหิ จ อาโกเฏสุํ ปตฺตญฺจ
ภินฺทึสุ สํฆาฏิญฺจ วิปฺผาเลสุนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
“idha mayhaṁ, bhante, tena panthena gacchantassa antarāmagge corā nikkhamitvā hatthehi ca pādehi ca ākoṭesuṁ, pattañca bhindiṁsu, saṅghāṭiñca vipphālesun”ti.
อถ โข ภควา เอตมตฺถํ วิทิตฺวา
ตายํ เวลายํ อิมํ อุทานํ อุทาเนสิ✎ ร่าง
Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:
Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment:
สทฺธึ จรเมกโต วสํ✎ ร่าง
“Saddhiṁ caramekato vasaṁ,
“Walking together, dwelling as one,

Misso aññajanena vedagū;
the knowledge master mixes with foolish folk.

Knowing this, they give up wickedness,
โกญฺโจ ขีรปโกว นินฺนคนฺติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Koñco khīrapakova ninnagan”ti.
