อภิตฺถเรถ กลฺยาเณ✎ ร่าง
Abhittharetha kalyāṇe,
Rush to do good,

pāpā cittaṁ nivāraye;
shield your mind from evil;
ทนฺธญฺหิ กโรโต ปุญฺญํ✎ ร่าง
Dandhañhi karoto puññaṁ,
for when you’re slow to do good,
ปาปสฺมึ รมตี มโน ฯ✎ ร่าง
pāpasmiṁ ramatī mano.
your thoughts delight in wickedness.
ปาปญฺเจ ปุริโส กยิรา✎ ร่าง
Pāpañce puriso kayirā,
If you do something bad,

น นํ กยิรา ปุนปฺปุนํ✎ ร่าง
Na naṁ kayirā punappunaṁ;
don’t do it again and again,
น ตมฺหิ ฉนฺทํ กยิราถ✎ ร่าง
Na tamhi chandaṁ kayirātha,
don’t set your heart on it,
ทุกฺโข ปาปสฺส อุจฺจโย ฯ✎ ร่าง
Dukkho pāpassa uccayo.
for piling up evil is suffering.
ปุญฺญญฺเจ ปุริโส กยิรา✎ ร่าง
Puññañce puriso kayirā,
If you do something good,
กยิราเถนํ ปุนปฺปุนํ✎ ร่าง
kayirā naṁ punappunaṁ;
do it again and again,
ตมฺหิ ฉนฺทํ กยิราถ✎ ร่าง
Tamhi chandaṁ kayirātha,
set your heart on it,
สุโข ปุญฺญสฺส อุจฺจโย ฯ✎ ร่าง
sukho puññassa uccayo.
for piling up goodness is joyful.

ปาโปปิ ปสฺสติ ภทฺรํ✎ ร่าง
Pāpopi passati bhadraṁ,
Even the wicked see good things,
ยาว ปาปํ น ปจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Yāva pāpaṁ na paccati;
so long as their wickedness has not ripened.
ยทา จ ปจฺจติ ปาปํ✎ ร่าง
Yadā ca paccati pāpaṁ,
But as soon as that wickedness ripens,
อถ (ปาโป) ปาปานิ ปสฺสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha pāpo pāpāni passati.
then the wicked see wicked things.
ภโทฺรปิ ปสฺสติ ปาปํ✎ ร่าง
Bhadropi passati pāpaṁ,
Even the good see wicked things,

ยาว ภทฺรํ น ปจฺจติ✎ ร่าง
Yāva bhadraṁ na paccati;
so long as their goodness has not ripened.
ยทา จ ปจฺจติ ภทฺรํ✎ ร่าง

But as soon as that goodness ripens,
อถ (ภโทฺร) ภทฺรานิ ปสฺสติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Atha bhadro bhadrāni passati.
then the good see good things.

Māvamaññetha pāpassa,
Think not lightly of evil,
น มตฺตํ ๑- อาคมิสฺสติ✎ ร่าง
na mantaṁ āgamissati;
that it won’t come back to you.
อุทพินฺทุนิปาเตน✎ ร่าง
Udabindunipātena,
The pot is filled with water
อุทกุมฺโภปิ ปูรติ

udakumbhopi pūrati;
falling drop by drop;
าปูรติ พาโล ปาปสฺส✎ ร่าง
Bālo pūrati pāpassa,
the fool is filled with wickedness
โถกํ โถกํปิ อาจินํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
thokaṁ thokampi ācinaṁ.
piled up bit by bit.

มาวมญฺเญถ ปุญฺญสฺส✎ ร่าง
Māvamaññetha puññassa,
Think not lightly of goodness,
น มตฺตํ อาคมิสฺสติ✎ ร่าง

that it won’t come back to you.
อุทพินฺทุนิปาเตน✎ ร่าง
Udabindunipātena,
The pot is filled with water
อุทกุมฺโภปิ ปูรติ

ปูรติ ธีโร ปุญฺญสฺส✎ ร่าง
Dhīro pūrati puññassa,
the attentive one is filled with goodness
โถกํ โถกํปิ อาจินํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
thokaṁ thokampi ācinaṁ.
piled up bit by bit.
วาณิโชว ภยํ มคฺคํ✎ ร่าง
Vāṇijova bhayaṁ maggaṁ,
Avoid wickedness,

appasattho mahaddhano;
as a merchant with rich cargo and small escort
วิสํ ชีวิตุกาโมว✎ ร่าง
Visaṁ jīvitukāmova,
would avoid a dangerous road,
ปาปานิ ปริวชฺชเย ฯ✎ ร่าง
pāpāni parivajjaye.
or one who loves life would avoid drinking poison.

Pāṇimhi ce vaṇo nāssa,
You can carry poison in your hand

hareyya pāṇinā visaṁ;
if it has no wound,

for poison does not infect without a wound;
นตฺถิ ปาปํ อกุพฺพโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
natthi pāpaṁ akubbato.
nothing bad happens unless you do bad.

Whoever wrongs a man who has done no wrong,

Suddhassa posassa anaṅgaṇassa;
a pure man who has not a blemish,
ตเมว พาลํ ปจฺเจติ ปาปํ✎ ร่าง
Tameva bālaṁ pacceti pāpaṁ,
the evil backfires on the fool,
สุขุโม รโช ปฏิวาตํว ขิตฺโต ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sukhumo rajo paṭivātaṁva khitto.
like fine dust thrown upwind.

คพฺภเมเก อุปฺปชฺชนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Gabbhameke uppajjanti,
Some are born in a womb;
นิรยํ ปาปกมฺมิโน✎ ร่าง
nirayaṁ pāpakammino;
evildoers go to hell;
สคฺคํ สุคติโน ยนฺติ✎ ร่าง
Saggaṁ sugatino yanti,
the virtuous go to heaven;
ปรินิพฺพนฺติ อนาสวา ฯ✎ ร่าง
parinibbanti anāsavā.
the undefiled are fully extinguished.
น อนฺตลิกฺเข น สมุทฺทมชฺเฌ✎ ร่าง
Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe,
Not in midair, nor mid-ocean,

น ปพฺพตานํ วิวรํ ปวีสํ✎ ร่าง
Na pabbatānaṁ vivaraṁ pavissa;
nor hiding in a mountain cleft;

Na vijjatī so jagatippadeso,
you’ll find no place on the planet
ยตฺรฏฺฐิโต มุญฺเจยฺย ปาปกมฺมา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Yatthaṭṭhito mucceyya pāpakammā.
to escape your wicked deeds.
น อนฺตลิกฺเข น สมุทฺทมชฺเฌ✎ ร่าง
Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe,
Not in midair, nor mid-ocean,
น ปพฺพตานํ วิวรํ ปวีสํ✎ ร่าง
Na pabbatānaṁ vivaraṁ pavissa;
