สพฺเพ ตสนฺติ ทณฺฑสฺส✎ ร่าง
Sabbe tasanti daṇḍassa,
All tremble at the rod,

สพฺเพ ภายนฺติ มจฺจุโน✎ ร่าง
sabbe bhāyanti maccuno;
all fear death.
อตฺตานํ อุปมํ กตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Attānaṁ upamaṁ katvā,
Treating others like oneself,
น หเนยฺย น ฆาตเย ฯ✎ ร่าง
na haneyya na ghātaye.
neither kill nor incite to kill.
สพฺเพ ตสนฺติ ทณฺฑสฺส✎ ร่าง
Sabbe tasanti daṇḍassa,
All tremble at the rod,
สพฺเพสํ ชีวิตํ ปิยํ✎ ร่าง
sabbesaṁ jīvitaṁ piyaṁ;
all love life.
อตฺตานํ อุปมํ กตฺวา✎ ร่าง
Attānaṁ upamaṁ katvā,

so if you harm them with a stick

เปจฺจ โส น ลภเต สุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
pecca so na labhate sukhaṁ.
after death you won’t find happiness.
สุขกามานิ ภูตานิ✎ ร่าง
Sukhakāmāni bhūtāni,
Creatures love happiness,
โย ทณฺเฑน น หึสติ✎ ร่าง
yo daṇḍena na hiṁsati;
so if you don’t harm them with a stick
อตฺตโน สุขเมสาโน✎ ร่าง
Attano sukhamesāno,
in search of your own happiness,
เปจฺจ โส ลภเต สุขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
pecca so labhate sukhaṁ.
after death you will find happiness.
มาโวจ ผรุสํ กญฺจิ✎ ร่าง
Māvoca pharusaṁ kañci,
Don’t speak harshly,
วุตฺตา ปฏิวเทยฺยุ ตํ✎ ร่าง
vuttā paṭivadeyyu taṁ;
they may speak harshly back.
ทุกฺขา หิ สารมฺภกถา✎ ร่าง
Dukkhā hi sārambhakathā,
For aggressive speech is painful,
ปฏิทณฺฑา ผุเสยฺยุ ตํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
paṭidaṇḍā phuseyyu taṁ.
and the rod may spring back on you.
สเจ เนเรสิ อตฺตานํ✎ ร่าง
Sace neresi attānaṁ,
If you still yourself

กํโส อุปหโต ยถา✎ ร่าง
kaṁso upahato yathā;
like a broken gong,
เอส ปตฺโตสิ นิพฺพานํ✎ ร่าง

sārambho te na vijjati.
and know no conflict.

Yathā daṇḍena gopālo,
As a cowherd drives the cows
คาโว ปาเชติ โคจรํ✎ ร่าง
gāvo pājeti gocaraṁ;
to pasture with the rod,
เอวํ ชรา จ มจฺจุ จ✎ ร่าง
Evaṁ jarā ca maccu ca,
so too old age and death
อายุํ ปาเชนฺติ ปาณินํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
āyuṁ pājenti pāṇinaṁ.
drive life from living beings.
อถ ปาปานิ กมฺมานิ✎ ร่าง
Atha pāpāni kammāni,
The fool does not understand
กรํ พาโล น พุชฺฌติ✎ ร่าง
karaṁ bālo na bujjhati;
the evil that they do.
เสหิ กมฺเมหิ ทุมฺเมโธ✎ ร่าง
Sehi kammehi dummedho,
But because of those deeds, that simpleton
อคฺคิทฑฺโฒว ตปฺปติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
aggidaḍḍhova tappati.
is tormented as if burnt by fire.

One who violently attacks

swiftly falls
ขิปฺปเมว นิคจฺฉติ✎ ร่าง
khippameva nigacchati.
to one of ten bad states:
เวทนํ ผรุสํ ชานึ✎ ร่าง
Vedanaṁ pharusaṁ jāniṁ,
harsh pain; loss;
สรีรสฺส จ เภทนํ✎ ร่าง
sarīrassa va bhedanaṁ;
the breakup of the body;
ครุกํ วาปิ อาพาธํ✎ ร่าง
Garukaṁ vāpi ābādhaṁ,
serious illness;
จิตฺตกฺเขปํ ว ปาปุเณ✎ ร่าง
cittakkhepaṁ va pāpuṇe.
mental distress;
ราชโต วา อุปสคฺคํ✎ ร่าง
Rājato vā upasaggaṁ,
hazards from rulers;
อพฺภกฺขานํ ว ทารุณํ✎ ร่าง
Abbhakkhānaṁ va dāruṇaṁ;
vicious slander;
ปริกฺขยํ ว ญาตีนํ✎ ร่าง
Parikkhayaṁ va ñātīnaṁ,
loss of kin;
โภคานํ ว ปภงฺคุณํ✎ ร่าง
Bhogānaṁ va pabhaṅguraṁ.
destruction of wealth;
อถ วาสฺส อคารานิ✎ ร่าง
Atha vāssa agārāni,
or else their home
อคฺคิ ฑหติ ปาวโก✎ ร่าง
aggi ḍahati pāvako;
is consumed by fire.
กายสฺส เภทา ทุปฺปญฺโญ✎ ร่าง
Kāyassa bhedā duppañño,
When their body breaks up, that witless person
นิรยํ โส อุปปชฺชติ ฯ✎ ร่าง
nirayaṁ sopapajjati.
is reborn in hell.

น นคฺคจริยา น ชฏา น ปงฺกา✎ ร่าง
Na naggacariyā na jaṭā na paṅkā,
Not nudity, nor matted hair, nor mud,

Nānāsakā thaṇḍilasāyikā vā;

Rajojallaṁ ukkuṭikappadhānaṁ,
nor wearing dust and dirt, or squatting on the heels,
โสเธนฺติ มจฺจํ อวิติณฺณกงฺขํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Sodhenti maccaṁ avitiṇṇakaṅkhaṁ.
will cleanse a mortal not free of doubt.
อลงฺกโต เจปิ สมํ จเรยฺย✎ ร่าง
Alaṅkato cepi samaṁ careyya,
Dressed up they may be, but if they live well—

peaceful, tamed, committed to the spiritual path,

Sabbesu bhūtesu nidhāya daṇḍaṁ,
having laid aside violence towards all creatures—
โส พฺราหฺมโณ โส สมโณ ส ภิกฺขุ ฯ✎ ร่าง
So brāhmaṇo so samaṇo sa bhikkhu.
they are a brahmin, an ascetic, a mendicant.

like a fine horse from the whip?
อสฺโส ยถา ภโทฺร กสานิวิฏฺโฐ✎ ร่าง
Asso yathā bhadro kasāniviṭṭho,
Like a fine horse under the whip,
อาตาปิโน สํเวคิโน ภวาถ✎ ร่าง
Ātāpino saṁvegino bhavātha;
be keen and full of urgency.
สทฺธาย สีเลน จ วิริเยน จ✎ ร่าง
Saddhāya sīlena ca vīriyena ca,
With faith, ethics, and energy,
สมาธินา ธมฺมวินิจฺฉเยน จ✎ ร่าง
Samādhinā dhammavinicchayena ca;
immersion, and investigation of principles,
สมฺปนฺนวิชฺชาจรณา ปติสฺสตา
ป✎ ร่าง
Sampannavijjācaraṇā patissatā,
accomplished in knowledge and conduct, mindful,
หสฺสถ ทุกฺขมิทํ อนปฺปกํ ฯ✎ ร่าง
Jahissatha dukkhamidaṁ anappakaṁ.
give up this vast suffering.
อุทกํ หิ นยนฺติ เนตฺติกา✎ ร่าง
Udakañhi nayanti nettikā,
While irrigators guide water,
อุสุการา นมยนฺติ เตชนํ✎ ร่าง
Usukārā namayanti tejanaṁ;
fletchers shape arrows,
ทารุํ นมยนฺติ ตจฺฉกา✎ ร่าง
Dāruṁ namayanti tacchakā,
and carpenters carve timber—
อตฺตานํ ทมยนฺติ สุพฺพตา ฯ✎ ร่าง
Attānaṁ damayanti subbatā.
those true to their vows tame themselves.
